I don’t think this is a good analogy: it’s not the violence that makes hitting someone with a frying pan not-cooking, it’s the fact that nothing gets cooked. I don’t think it would be incorrect, even though it would be -awful- to call *actually cooking someone* cooking. In my opinion, part of what makes rape [...]

But India just has very different problems in regards to reproductive rights. Sure, abortion is available, but women are also sterilized without being properly informed (this is illegal but still happens). There’s also lots of misinformation about contraception so most women don’t use it and only control reproduction using abortion and sterilization. India can’t afford [...]

I thought this was a surprisingly productive discussion about abortion and surrounding issues: http://www.onbeing.org/program/pro-life-pro-choice-pro-dialogue/4863

Heh… I need to see it too.

  • Miriam commented on the blog post Rape is not sex   1 year, 7 months ago · View

This never made any sense to me. Rape is inherently sexual, and its sexual nature is part of what makes it as powerful and traumatic as it is. The word sex just refers to a physical act, an act that happens during rape. Sex need not be value laden, we need not expect that sex [...]

They could install these: http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2012/02/11/urinals-for-women-an-alternative-reality/ ! I’m not sure if Timothy Ritchie and Lisa Wade are right or not (I’ve met at least one woman who insists she can pee standing up), but for myself I’m rather fond of female urination devices, which are basically just funnels that you can put between your legs in [...]

This was really interesting, I had no knowledge of this phenomenon.

I’ve been thinking about this now and then since GS got caught up in controversy for accepting a trans girl. This seems to be an ongoing problem, where segregating by either sex or gender gets messy because both concepts are messy. (Also, people are bigoted.) And I was always disapointed as a kid when I [...]

?!?!?!? Hand holding?! HAND HOLDING?! Are people just not allowed to be affectionate towards each other anymore? Shall we ban hugs and any and all touch of any kind? This is real??

  • Miriam commented on the blog post A woman, travelling….alone? GASP!   2 years ago · View

Awesome. :) I happen to be a 20-something American woman in India right now and I spent a little bit of time traveling on my own (for the most part I’ve been in a group) and by far that was the time I was most able to learn and explore and generally have the best [...]

This reminded me, one of the guys in my study abroad program has occasionally referred to “man club” at his school, which is affiliated with the Men Can Stop Rape campaign and is created specifically as a space for male allies. On the one hand I think it sounds really good and helpful and at [...]

The existence of a dress code isn’t the problem. The problem is insinuating that the way a person dresses puts her or someone else at risk morally or physically.

It occurs to me occasionally that even though I only really started to learn about feminism in the last year, I’ve had a problem with certain gender roles for maybe my whole life.  I just didn’t always think about it this way. I was told pretty explicitly by my brother and next door neighbor when [...]

I agree with both of you. That is, while it is true that victims usually know their rapists, it is also my understanding that rapists intentionally seek out vulnerable women. I don’t think gingersnap647 is necessarily reinforcing the narrative of the “jumps out of the bushes to get you” rapist.

I’m an undergrad at a state university in Ohio.  Last night I got a phone call from a close friend from high school going to school several states away.  She was in tears and expressed the fear the birth control pills were making her depressed. We throw around the word “depression” a lot, but in [...]
