I think that in this case, “gendered” is actually being used to mean “only or mostly happens to women”, rather than referring to any kind of gender difference.

We’re talking about 4chan here, you’re seriously overestimating the amount of actual message in their trolling. For instance, from what I can tell at this point the only reason anyone outside of 4chan even saw those menu items is because someone from 4chan itself screencapped the site before another person replaced them all with the [...]

Oh, and some context. ShitRedditSays is a feminist/anti-racist/etc community within Reddit nominally dedicated to mocking and drawing attention to the sexism, racism, transphobia etc within the rest of the Reddit community. Any comments that are sexist, racist, transphobic, generally not feminist, … are deleted by the moderators and their comments banned. Because one of their [...]

Link to discussion. Sample highly-voted comment: ‘The problem is that reddit doesn’t think “overly attached girlfriend” is funny because it’s absurd they think it’s funny because it’s true. This is why we can’t have nice things.’

The “overly attached girlfriend” meme apparently originated on Reddit, and the consensus amongst the feminists there seems to be that would only trivialize domestic violence and stalking if someone did a version with a guy in.

Despite what the Salon piece says it’s not just a straight male sex toy revolution at all; I’m pretty sure Fleshlights sold well to the gay male market even before they officially started marketing to them, though for some reason they use a seperate brand name when marketing their toys to gay guys. Presumably they’re [...]

If you read that piece carefully, Gloria Steinem and Lauren Wolfe aren’t actually asking if we can end rape as a weapon of war. They’re asking if we can end the rape of women as a weapon of war. This is a rather important distinction to make , because opinion pieces like the one you linked are the reason [...]

Well, one obvious alternative answer is that it’s symbolic of their future husband’s ability to fulfill his traditional role as provider and source of income. That is, it’s not meant to show that the women wearing it is owned, but that she’s managed to find a particularly eligible future husband. The more trite answer is [...]

” Is there some kind of innate biological investment which dictates the proceeding financial investment? Darwinism would suggest this is the case. But surely we have come a long way down that anthropological path, since primordial males left the cave and offspring for the women to tend to? Seemingly, there is more than trace elements leftover [...]

Yeah, it very much looks like it yet again. Not sure if there’s any message beyond this, and to be honest the topic’s a bit too triggery for me to think about this late at night.

Erosion of certain gender roles should remind us that the remaining gender roles (including those that act against men, but also those that act against women) may be (and usually are) unnecessary.

Should do, but in practice doesn’t. For a start, that requires recognition that the remaining gender roles exist, that they are widespread, and that [...]

That’s like saying that condoms have a low success rate if people don’t actually use them.

That’s how the effectiveness of condoms and other methods of contraception is usually measured, though. It’s not how often they fail if used reliably, but the total failure rate amongst people that intend to use that method of contraception – including [...]

and even wiping those clean does not rule out the issue of a difference in biological averages leading to uneven abuses, uneven power, and (to the point of some “feminists” calling for domestic violence services be for women only) uneven expectations Except that there’s a consistent, reliable bias in which this kind of sweeping biological [...]

The trouble is that it looks very much like equality, if you squint and ignore the elephants in the room. As the various submissions pointed out, “equal” does not mean “the same”, and if men and women don’t have the same need for these services it makes no sense to have the same provisions. The [...]

I still see gender, but sort of the interesting thing about these developments is that point to the idea of gender being nearly irrelevant.

That’s the interesting thing – it isn’t, and feminism isn’t making it so. For example, the UK government passed a new Equality Act fairly recently, and I dug through all the submissions [...]

Interesting: “Men Against Violence Program Coordinator”. That title doesn’t specify one particular kind of violence, yet from what I can tell it actually mostly or entirely refers to domestic violence and rape against women, like every other “Men Against Violence” group. Apparently we’re just automatically meant to assume that this is the one kind of violence that [...]

Although many feminists define themselves as for gender equality, many people who do not identify as feminist understand feminism to be focused only on rights for women.

Errm… the feminist definition of “gender equality” is one that’s primarily about rights for women. The problems that strict gender roles cause men are dealt with insofar as doing [...]

If it is an organization’s intent to actually be supportive of sex assault victims, as opposed to being simply transphobic, what would be an example of a proper approach? I can imagine there are many sex assault victims (as well as other women) who would be put off by someone they *perceive* as not a woman [...]

Yeah, and so are their male partners. Of course, post-Gender Recognition Act, the treatment of trans women for blood donation purposes over here in the UK is now truely, mind-warpingly bizarre…

  • makomk commented on the blog post Dear FDA: Get with the Program, and Stop Turning Away Willing Blood Donors   4 years, 1 month ago · View

What’s interesting is that the FDA goes on about how European states have similar rules on blood donations, but as I understand it many European states have aligned their rules on blood donation with the FDA’s so that they can make money from selling excess donated blood products to the US. In other words, it’s [...]
