Interesting, though I’d point out that it’s pretty unlikely that Brave ripped the archery subplot off of Hunger Games. They likely started production at around the same time. Brave in fact may have been in pre-production for longer due to a delay from the studio as they changed directors.

Yeah, the Internet makes it a lot easier to step on toes, plus arguments tend to get so heated online that it’s easy to be immediately in Argument Mode even in benign conversations. Living with my boyfriend now I can’t imagine how I managed food with that much money, since obviously all of it couldn’t [...]

That’s completely fair, and I think your points are really really good in this post and in the other. And to be fair, I’m pretty knee-jerky about this too, perhaps from the other side of things. I went to college with people who were generally much better off than me money-wise and often felt that [...]

I agree with a lot of what’s said here and am already discussing the “affordable food” issue a bit in the other post, but I do think it’s disingenuous to paint everyone bringing up the money issue as people who can’t possibly be poor. There are plenty of people who bring the issue of access [...]

I highly recommend the great site the Pervocracy for her posts tagged “cosmocking”. She goes through issues of the magazines and points out/mocks the stuff she finds most offensive or stupid.

Thank you for saying this. I think it’s especially great that you brought up her doctor: I’ve known several women who were smokers before they got pregnant, and because of the nature of their individual addiction to nicotine, their doctors told them NOT to quit because they were pregnancy, as the stress for her body [...]

Honestly I kind of wish every asshole in the world who thinks that shirt is funny was required to wear it all day every day. It’d give me a really clear message about who to never, ever spend time with.

That seems fair to me. Currently I’m not personally willing to give her the benefit of the doubt but I can understand why someone who is a bigger fan would be. Hopefully she does not disappoint again and starts listening to valid critiques from feminists.

I notice the link to her acknowledging it, but that’s a pretty half assed apology if it even is one. The whole “I’m sorry IF I offended someone” passive phrasing has always seemed disingenuous to me.

Napoleoninrags, for some reason I’m not getting an option to reply to you directly, perhaps because the thread has gotten too long or something. Anyway, it’s only saying I “won’t acknowledge” anything they do if you lack reading comprehension. I acknowledge that Wolf has contributed many important things to feminist discourse. I realize that Palmer [...]

Of course Wolf and Palmer saying or doing offensive things does not suddenly make their worth valueless. However, for me until Wolf and Palmer show that they actually have an understanding of WHY their actions and words are offensive and sincerely take a look at those behaviors, I have no real interest in singing their [...]

I feel that there’s a second incident I’m thinking of but can’t find reference to, but here’s a link to her tweeting jokingly about the KKK: http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com/2010/03/over-edge.html
And here’s a bevy of links about the Evelyn Evelyn controversy and why it was so offensive (rightfully) to many people:

Wait a second. You realize that you are on a site that is supposed to be dedicated to feminism, which means that it should be directly tied in to the kyriarchy of oppression, right? Complaining about “political correctness” here seems completely out of place. All “political correctness” means is being informed about what might offend [...]

Sorry, but this video doesn’t make up for the offensive ableist bullshit Palmer has pulled off in the past, and her absolute refusal to apologize for or even take ownership for her offensive actions.

The tone of this post is really dismissive. You mention the wording people with objections to this use, but then dismiss it basically as an overreaction. You know many people have very genuine and good reasons to be very angry about these new policies, right? I’m a survivor myself so when I travel next week, [...]

It’s not hardcore, but I’m a bit fan of ishotmyself.com and http://www.beautifulagony.com. I know the people who run both sites and they are an amazing, pro-feminist group, plus they hire tons of women (and not just for admin jobs/modeling). They also have a site called Abby Winters which has more hardcore content, though I don’t [...]

I’m sure the men in my past who assaulted me didn’t see it as rape and thus didn’t “intent” an assault, but it was still rape. You’re skirting dangerous ground here. And no, it’s not like a visit to a doctor. A doctor is certified and is touching my body presumably for my own health. [...]

I don’t think this will necessarily appeal to all women, though. I don’t like plot in my porn, I just want to see people I find attractive having sex.
