I disagree somewhat with your premise, though I do agree with your conclusion. I do think that we all have some innate difference in capabilities. That said, it doesn’t really matter what they are if you’re in a situation that prevents you from exploring them. This tends to come up a bit in geek communities, [...]

While I also have no problem with it (at least in theory), I’ve noticed in the past that different networks handle their coverage of the Games differently. Some cover entire events, while others will show only their own country’s athletes and then switch to something else. I’m not fond of the latter format, because I [...]

Wow. I really wasn’t trying to say I get attacked more (and certainly not constantly), just that it feels that way to me –there’s probably a lot of stuff you notice that I don’t because of our different circumstances and I’m not going to deny what you say you have to deal with, because I believe you. [...]

I guess this is yet another example of how a woman can never make the ‘right’ choice, because I rather sympathize with Veronica. As a married feminist, I see–or at least notice–people denigrating marriage more than I see them denigrating other arrangements or simply staying single. Some people feel that marriage is an institution that [...]

It’s also possible you might just luck into a group who’ll respect your decision. After high school, I can’t think of a single instance where anyone ever more than offered drugs or alcohol (the summer I spent around habitual drugs users I got several apologies for people mistakenly passing me joints). I understand if you [...]

In it’s own odd way, the fact that being large is stigmatised more than being small means that it’s easier for larger people to find others who, if they haven’t struggled with the issue themselves, at least are sympathetic to those who do. Whereas is you’re thin, you feel like you have to keep quiet [...]

“Most video games are designed for and marketed at a male audience.” While that’s true, they’re being deliberately ignorant if they think that male gamers make up the whole market. What frustrates me, though, is the idea that what male gamers and female gamers want is significantly different (Most game designed for ‘girls’ I find [...]

While this is more or less what happened with my husband, there’s another important thing that made me willing to change my answer:

He backed off after I said ‘no’.

There is little that is a bigger turn off than being harassed by a man who won’t take no for an answer.

Personally, being a feminist has always been a bit of a ‘duh’ thing for me. Women and men are equal–I’ve always held that to be a self-evident truth. What depression does is push me to be more active and focused about it. I’m angry at the things that make me and other people suffer, and [...]

I think it’s largely just because most people are sexual, and so if there’s people of the appropriate gender around, there’s a possibility for romantic feelings to arise. I’ve been having mixed feelings about Julie E. Czerneda on this issue. While her protagonists always wind up paired off, the romance is incidental–they spend enough time [...]

#5 doesn’t even make sense. I can see someone trying to argue that it’s not as hard as you think it is, but saying it’s hard as a reason to do something? The only answer I can think of to that is, “Exactly.”

  • jayn commented on the blog post Should single-sex education be allowed?   2 years, 10 months ago · View

What SSE might do is allow girls to grow and be comfortable with themselves enough that when they do get out into the ‘real’ world and are competing with men, they will already have the confidence they need. On the other hand, that effect might also be counter-acted by the increased sexism that such a [...]

  • “girls can only be self confident and have a positive self image if they’re a size 2″ No, we’re not allowed to be self confident either. Our boobs aren’t big enough, or we’re too thin, or we need to dye our hair, etc. (And apparently we don’t have sex because I have a hard time [...]

That argument has always bothered me because while yes, I get more emotional during ‘that time’, it’s a difference of degree and not kind. What pisses me off during PMS would piss me off any time of the month–I’m just being louder about it right now. (Oddly, the one occasion I do recall getting this [...]

Fourth (or maybe secondly: part b): The more effective, longer lasting (and ultimately cheaper) types of BC cost more up front. An IUD is pretty much immune to user error, but you need several hundred dollars in your pocket to get one. Making them available at no cost means women have better access to more [...]

I would. On the other hand, I come from a country whose leader got a pie to the face, and where another party leader had chocolate milk thrown on him.

I can’t remember which comedian it was (Ralphie May?) who suggested this as a way of getting back at someone, because glitter is impossible to completely wipe off. So Newt was probably glittering all day.

    Pretty damn cool.

And on a side note about Snow White, there’s a French film (Alice’s Odyssey) in which she left the prince and moved back in with the dwarves. As she puts it, “one for each day of the week.” She’s also, if I recall rightly, the most well-adjusted of the fairy-tale people they meet (although leaving [...]

Belle is absolutely my favourite of the princesses (though Mulan and Pochahontas are close behind). I think her love of books is the main reason, since I love reading as well. And while you may say Stockholm Syndrome, of all the princes the Beast has to EARN her love the most. The turning point for [...]
