  • I read this and think of James Brown :/

I’m truly disturbed at young women believing that Breezy is a relationship role model. That frightens me. I think a lot of older women have the same beliefs about Rihanna’s place in what happened, particularly women of color, and it’s something that needs to be addressed and healed. I tend to think it has to [...]

  • Thank you for sharing and opening up about this experience. I’m really sorry this happened to you but hopeful from the guy’s apology that things start to change in that space. Your dad is watching/reading proudly and keep showing and proving to those fools who doubt your goddess power :) xoxo

I never heard this Alanis song, really dig it, thanks! And I’m not remotely surprised that Vanessa & Perez know every word to “I’ll Make Love To You” but would love to have seen that lol :)

Beautiful photo, Chloe! And I can still remember the Macarena too…smh.

Thank you for sharing that story. It’s so disheartening to feel helpless in these situations. There’s such a flood of conflicting thoughts in how to react to maintain your safety and that of others. I think there’s a lot of positivity and room for growth when we ask ourselves these questions.

As I was leaving “Preventing Violence, Promoting Justice,” the first ever summit organized by Sakhi for South Asian Women (an anti-domestic violence organization based in New York City that focuses on South Asian communities), I witnessed a young couple (both were people of color) arguing in the street. The young man was in the woman’s face aggressively [...]

Let me confess: I talk hella shit about Jay-Z. Not because I don’t respect his long career and enjoy his music (I genuinely do) but because it seems everyone, especially in New York, is a Jiggaman “Stan” and sometimes I like to be contrary. Folks love his swagger arrogance and egoism, and even though it gets [...]

It’s pretty disgusting that this keeps happening. Over the last 10 years I feel like there have been a lot of these cases, usually on college campuses. I specifically remember a frat had a night similar to this and they had blackface. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/779674/posts (don’t read the comments!) As I searched for it I found a [...]

Great post, Jos. I wasn’t there but heard about some of the discussions that went on and how there was some tension but that ultimately people left expanded by the conversations with lots of food for thought about how we may be hurting one another even as we try to work together. I think it’s [...]

SMH…as someone who has done entertainment PR I think the line of questioning is ridiculous, irrelevant and essentially shit-stirring. If I was Bieber’s publicist, I would be pissed because there’s no “right” answer to this question for him. What was the author/interviewer’s point in asking him that? I would have shut that question down right [...]

Wow…very interesting. Facebook ads crack me up because they assume so much based on such basic information. They assume I am a lesbian because I say I’m interested in men & women and because I post a lot of women-focused content (I’m bi). They assume I’m vegetarian/vegan b/c I post stuff about healthy food, food [...]

I feel you on the idea of not necessarily wanting to gender to be invisible. That idea is hard for me to wrap my head around…even though gender is socially constructed. One of the things I appreciate about online spaces is that we can build because of these commonalities. Gender is clearly not one-size-fits-all but [...]

Super Bowl XLV is going down this Sunday, the sporting event of the year in which the majority of the nation comes together to overindulge in fried foods, and other artery-clogging snacks and dips, and drink beer while watching the best in the NFL battle it out for football supremacy (at least until September when [...]

In my other life, I work as a social media consultant and spend ridiculous amounts of time consuming information about how social media transforms the way we communicate with others. It’s undeniably a powerful tool, has become one of our international grassroots eyes and ears (see: Egypt and Iran) and allows many of us to [...]

Thanks Miriam for sharing your experience with anxiety and depression. I have battled with those things too and meditation has helped me immensely. I got inspired by your journey and started today on my own 28-day meditation challenge. It’s not a formal program but more about doing some meditation every day. I feel the difference [...]

Parents and community members in Oakland, California are outraged about two incidents in the same elementary school classroom in which second graders ran around partially disrobed and two students performed oral sex on each other. The story came to light when one of the second-grade students reported the incident. The district spokesman, Troy Flint, says [...]

Thumbnail Saturday, January 22 marked the 38th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade , which legalized abortion in the United States. As this new Congress aims to steadily chip away at women’s legal rights to choice and to access all of their reproductive health options, it will take a community of concerned citizens to [...]
