I’m also curious about a deadline. Let us know, please!

I agree with most of your post but it bugged me that you used that “women hate women” clip as example of true insights in his comedy. I’ve only watched a little bit of Chris Rock’s comedy but I feel like there are WAY better examples of insight than a clip of him talking about [...]

  • Great post. I sometimes have a hard time talking about abortion rights with people, because I would have an abortion if I found myself pregnant today, and I don’t fit into the usual categories. I have not been raped. I am not a teenager. I have a steady job and income (not really enough to [...]

I also couldn’t get the logo added to my post. For some reason, my add new post page wasn’t even showing an “upload/insert media” button or option anywhere. But I still put “A SYTYCB entry.”

  • Genie Leslie wrote a new blog post: Why the “Year of the Woman” is still another year of sexism   1 year, 11 months ago · View

“I want to win as an athlete. I want to shine as a woman.” This is the tagline for a Pantene Pro-V commercial starring Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin. We all know that ads geared towards women are ridiculous and that beauty ads tend to equate products with ruling the world, or having it all, or other [...]

I didn’t feel like the story was about an overbearing mother whom the daughter has to overcome. I felt like it was a very real mother-daughter story in which both had to relax their ideals and accept the mother/daughter they have while not giving up on what they deem most important for themselves and their [...]

Today the Internet is buzzing about Obama coming out (no pun intended) in support of gay marriage. In an interview with ABC (the full interview has not actually aired but this clip has been released), Obama talks about the “evolution” of his views on gay marriage. Now, we all know why he is announcing this today. [...]

OK wait, I realize this comment was made in the context of a vaginismus conversation, so maybe I’m going too far, but is losing your virginity not supposed to hurt? Or just, not supposed to hurt and keep hurting? Also, I would like to thank you for your comment on “real sex.” This is SO [...]

I LOVE this movie. My sisters and I used to walk around saying things like, “Oops, what if my bosoms pop out?” “You think there are men in this country who ain’t seen your bosoms?” Love!

Well, I’m not finished with it, but I’m currently reading We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver and loving it. I love reading about a woman’s doubts about motherhood, and even admitting that she didn’t want to have children, didn’t plan to, and might even regret it. It’s a perspective that gets ignored, [...]

I think we’ll get more about the queen in episodes to come. Ultimately, she may still be irredeemable, I don’t know, but I definitely think there’s more to her story that will round her out a little. I’m dying to know what Snow White did to her!

I’ve gotten sucked into the new ABC show  Once Upon a Time . For one thing, I’m a sucker for fairy-tale stories with a twist. ( OUAT is about fairy tale characters who have been cursed, sent into the future, and forgotten who they are. Yes it sounds ridiculous; watch it and you’ll love it!) For another, from [...]

  • Genie Leslie commented on the blog post The problem of feminist mental health   2 years, 6 months ago · View

I think this is a very interesting post. I haven’t had “official” mental health problems (at least not ones leading to medication, but I’ve also expressly avoided the therapist…) but both my sister and my mother have. I remember blaming my sister for her depression, maybe because I couldn’t SEE her problem. I just always [...]

  • Genie Leslie wrote a new blog post: Seriously?! Herman Cain, a “Pimp”   2 years, 8 months ago · View

I’m so sick of hearing about Herman Cain I almost don’t want to write this post, but it’s not really about Cain; this is about how sexual harassment (and rape, too often) are perceived in our society. Recently, listening to the radio, I heard a man discussing the latest Herman Cain news and the fact that [...]

  • Genie Leslie wrote a new blog post: Why Mississippi’s defeat of personhood is important   2 years, 8 months ago · View

First of all: Whooooooo!!!!! We did it!!!! I don’t know if I’ve ever woken up singing and dancing, but I did On November 9. Ok. So why is this a big deal? We know that personhood initiatives are in the works in other states, and less than twelve hours after our victory, we know that [...]

@vanessa Hi. I’m a feminist in Mississippi and I love love Feministing. I was wondering if there is a way to get Feministing to feature a piece on personhood amendments, especially the one coming up for vote in Mississippi on Nov. 8, but also the fact that there are attempts at this type of amendment pending in all fifty states. Basically, I would really like to get the word out there that 1)It’s not just ”backwards MS,” the personhood problem is everywhere, 2) there are Mississippians who are actively fighting against this amendment (with mentions of groups if possible) and 3) that any support is wanted and needed, even if it’s just spreading the word about this threat to women’s rights.
I don’t want to to presume to tell y’all what to feature on your site; I’m just asking if it’s possible and how to go about it. Is the best way to just write something and try to submit it? I submitted a personhood piece on the Community blog, but I don’t know how much traffic that gets (I just recently discovered that it existed; so exciting!). Is it even possible for anyone to submit to the main blog or is that just for the main contributors? Anyway, I would love to write a piece for this, but I’m also just interested in getting it out there, so if it’s something you were interested in featuring and wanted to get one of the writers/contributors that you know to write it, great! I would just really appreciate any feedback about getting this information out there. The Vote No Campaign in Mississippi is kind of scrambling and trying to get as much information out as quickly as possible, and as you can imagine, it’s difficult to get involvement in our state, but we do have a good group of people working on it, and many more committed to voting no. Any help from the Feministing community would be greatly appreciated.
I have written a good bit about the personhood amendment on my blog at http://notanaughtyword.blogspot.com. Not trying to pull a shameless plus; just check it out if you want to see more info or anything. If not, don’t go to it; no big deal.

    Thanks so much,
    Genie Leslie

As a woman and a feminist living in Mississippi, I have to comment on the personhood movement and the upcoming vote in November for Amendment 26. Aiming to define life as beginning at the moment of conception, not only would abortion become illegal, but we could lose many types of birth control pills, contraceptives, in [...]

So far, I am not excited about the English-speaking version of  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo . I loved loved loved the book series, and saw the first Swedish film adaptation of it. I loved the film. I was amazed with the amount of violence they were able to show without being too gruesome (basically, the [...]
