So, “Take care not to have your drink spiked” is blaming the victim, but “Go to the bar that has glasses that can tell if your drink has been spiked” is preventing rape?

I am confused by an apparent reversal on a major feminist position.

I agree. “WAM politely blown off” is not a good result.

How would you suggest that someone with an unusual kink who is looking for a partner advertise it? Or are people on FetLife acceptable to address in such a manner, while people on other dating sites not? Why?

  • Was the song title available in the course syllabus? Did McNair had the information he needed to drop the class early enough to do so? Or is it simply enough to say that the personal opinions of the author do not extend to every work they produce, and “Song for Democracy” does not contain Whitman’s [...]

    >Roberts, in writing the majority ruling remains unclear as to which parts of the constitution were in violation of the 40 year law that protected voting rights for African Americans, requiring several southern states (and some Northern districts) to be pre-cleared before implementing new voting rules. I don’t think the constitution works the way you [...]

If she isn’t old enough to give informed consent to give birth, she certainly isn’t old enough to give informed consent to have an abortion.

You can exercise paternalism and decide for her, but that breaks autonomy no matter which way it goes.

Wal-Mart would have a valid legal case against the city if they planned to get concessions for entry and, after the new stores came in, passed further restrictions. Why not increase the minimum wage for everyone, or raise taxes and provide a tax break for locally-sourced businesses? Why are minimum-wage no benefit Wal-Mart jobs worse [...]

What’s the significance of the graffiti?

And is the apparent skin tone difference due to lighting/camera difference, or is it also intentional?

Domestic violence is also a people’s issue; but violence against men already isn’t deemed a matter worthy of not specifically excluding from the discussion.

Wait, Medicaid can get federal funding without imposing a cost on anyone? Why can’t everything and everybody get free wealth like that?

You probably want to look into the work of James Portnow. Among other things, he has a crowdfunded pool of money with which to recursively invest in independent games developers, with an emphasis on breaking the status quo. The computer science skills gap is the biggest obstacle I currently see, and that has a simple [...]

I’m also confused as to why it sounds scripted, unless there was a meta-level implication that the writers at E3 aren’t capable of better writing.

In those three months, about another 100 teen rape victims committed suicide.

I’m lighting a candle for the statistical victim who dies tomorrow.

  • I refuse to condone fraud and gross misrepresentation even when used in support of a noble cause.

  • It’s more important that access to EC be protected than to signal that access to EC is important. By making a blocking attempt that fails appeals, the Obama administration is causing a court precedent to be set, which will be harder for future executives or legislators to overcome. I’m not sure what the actual motivations [...]

  • People are the key to peace. People understand the value of life. People love life. People give life. People save lives. And it’s people who are prepared to give their lives so that our lives can be born of theirs. Therefore, it’s people who can talk about negotiating. It is people who know how to negotiate. [...]

I have personal knowledge of one case where a male was accused and charged with a felony for committing statutory rape. This is the first case I have seen of a female who committed the same crime being charged, but I’m sure that’s mostly my not paying a lot of attention.

Is it possible to oppose rape culture and ignorance without hating ignorant people raised by rape culture?

Reconstruction wasn’t about hating former slavers, was it?

  • Dan commented on the blog post Feminist radicalism isn’t a “brand problem”   1 year, 2 months ago · View

Lots of feminists disagree about what feminism is and should be. This isn’t about people who disagree, it’s about people who agree on the major principles but don’t want to be associated with the angry bra-burning radical image that many people associate with the word “feminism”.

  • Would your opinion be the same if the exact same actions were taken but a bystander were to be permanently blinded by the superheated steam and drain cleaner that was the explosion? Only factors completely uncontrolled by the students involved separate what you call a harmless experimentation from a tragedy. If the punishment is lenient, [...]
