  • I didn’t think any amount of misogyny coming from right-wing politicians and their backers could shock me any more. I was wrong.

Speaking as an Indiana voter… THIS. I’ll vote for Donnelly, because a run-of-the-mill anti-choicer is better than the abomination that is Mourdock, and Donnelly will at least vote sensibly on some issues. But I sure miss living in a state where I could say I was represented by Bernie Sanders.

This is a nasty little update to Reagan’s ”welfare queens.” The implication, after all, is that the poor are enjoying a bountiful safety net that showers them with goodies extracted from the suffering middle class. And it’s likely to resonate, because the last thing a struggling middle-class person wants to hear is, ”Hey, those poor people across town have it even worse than you.”

Personally, I prefer a president who can manage to be concerned about the poor and the middle class at the same time. But I guess you have to have a soul to be genuinely concerned about anybody.

At this moment, deficit reduction should be the last thing on our agenda. Debt for a sovereign nation is not the same thing as debt for a person, or even a corporation. Nobody is going to repossess the United States of America; China cannot march in and announce it’s foreclosing on our country. The danger [...]

“This is why we need more women in power…”

    Two words: President Bachmann.

We do need more women in power, but this is not why.

The idea that America has been living beyond its means since 1776 is… dubious, to say the least. If that were the case, we should have run out of means a long time ago. Debt for a sovereign nation is totally different from debt for you and me. A nation can run small deficits forever [...]

Of course I do, but people in other countries don’t generally benefit from the American safety net. If U.S. government spending is suddenly slashed to the bone by failure to raise the debt ceiling, most of the pain will be felt in the United States–though there will certainly be a nasty economic ripple effect, and [...]

“Right now, studios don’t think that we, audiences, will show up to watch openly gay actors in leading roles, and sadly, they’re right.” Are they? Is there any research to support this belief? I don’t recall people boycotting “The Lord of the Rings” because Ian McKellen played Gandalf. Maybe it’s different for romances, but I’m [...]
