Courtney commented on the blog post How the Internet Became the Bastion of Misogyny 9 months, 1 week ago · View
I love that idea! I feel like the progressive, feminist, anti-sexist and anti-racist voices are so rarely present on the internet that it’s hard to even care – and because of that misogyny and racism have become normalized and it doesn’t even seem worth it to try. But there’s power in numbers. I like that [...]

Courtney wrote a new blog post: How the Internet Became the Bastion of Misogyny 9 months, 3 weeks ago · View
I usually don’t respond to misogynistic, immature comments or posts on youtube, tumblr, or any other social media site. Females everywhere, whether they consider themselves feminists or not, who engage in social media have most likely experienced veiled or overt misogyny on comment boards or blog sites. It’s nothing new and sometimes the easiest thing [...]

Courtney commented on the blog post Sarah Silverman demonstrates how to make a rape joke 10 months, 1 week ago · View
Sarah Silverman is so creative and original with her humor, it’s always interesting to hear new material from her. Wanda Sykes’ routine is also brilliant. Tosh, on the other hand, is mostly incredibly frustrating. His show is mostly fat shaming/slut shaming/hipster racism. The problem with comics like him is that they take this space that [...]

Courtney commented on the blog post Olympic sexism study: Male athletes have skill and female athletes have luck 11 months, 1 week ago · View
The race angle is very true – as much as I adore baseball and hearing play-by-plays, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the announcers comment on the speed and base-running skills of the African-American players. I don’t think it’s intentional or necessarily has any negativity behind it – it’s just a heavily [...]

Courtney commented on the blog post A New Day in Politics: Complicated conversations about Muslim women’s rights 1 year ago · View
I will commend Eltahawy for sparking a really important conversation and I loved watching her and Ahmed discuss their disagreements and respect for each other on MHP – it’s so great to see two women who disagree NOT being pitted against each other. I think discussions of women and Islam are often hijacked by white [...]

The law passed in 1994 with bipartisan support. There have always been conservatives who were opposed to the law, but congress has moved so far to the right that what was once extreme conservatism is now pretty much normal. I am just in so much shock and awe at the politicians who are using this [...]

“I am fully in support of anyone doing whatever (safe, consensual) thing that want to do to get themselves off. Feminists for Orgasms! And Katie? The reason those psychologists are reluctant to talk about these fantasies as “rape fantasies” is because they know people like you will take their findings and act as though these [...]

Courtney commented on the blog post Hilary Rosen, Ann Romney, and what the “stay at home” mom conversation overlooks 1 year, 1 month ago · View
I’m really glad to see this “controversy” being discussed in terms of race and class. I’ll admit – I was kind of put off when I first heard Rosen’s comments. But after reading the full transcript of the interview and taking it in context, I realized she was basically right. My mother was a “stay-at-home” [...]

Courtney commented on the blog post Trans rights are reproductive rights 1 year, 1 month ago · View
WOW! Great piece. I know that feminists today often get a lot of flack for not being vocal enough about trans rights, and that trans men and women often get forgotten when discussions of reproductive rights or LGBT rights get brought up. I wrote a post recently that framed reproductive rights around disabled women. One [...]

Courtney commented on the blog post The FBI & Department of Justice to look into Trayvon Martin’s death 1 year, 2 months ago · View
This is so incredibly heartbreaking. This story should be an eye-opener, and a teaching lesson for everyone about racial profiling and privilege. Some may not want to admit it but had the roles been reversed, or had Trayvon been white, this would have been a much different story. I also hope it can be a [...]

I am so embarrassed and upset as a Missourian. I’ve always said – and I said this in my email to Speaker Tilley – that I love my hometown of St. Louis and feel a strong connection with my fellow Missourians as we all do, but I am far too often embarrassed by my state. [...]

Courtney commented on the blog post Guest Post: Why I’m rooting against Bridesmaids at the Oscars 1 year, 2 months ago · View
I have to disagree. I loved Bridesmaids and I do get a bit of an emotional attachment to movies I love so maybe I’m biased in my analysis but I’ll try to be objective. Like it or not, I do believe that we are told being insecure is an inherent trait of womanhood in the [...]

It didn’t sit well with me either. I mean, kudos to her for speaking her truth and not being afraid of backlash, but I don’t really think it’s good for the gay community – especially women who, as you said, are not taken seriously as members of the LGBT community. My biggest problem, really, is [...]

Courtney commented on the blog post Sterilization of developmentally disabled women 1 year, 4 months ago · View
I’m glad you noticed what I wrote. Maybe I should’ve been more clear about the point of my post – I wanted to talk about how disabled women are sexually assaulted at a much higher rate than non-disabled women, and because of that, access to reproductive health care is extremely important because it may be [...]

I completely agree. This is an issue that, unfortunately, gets ignored far too often. It’s so important for diverse men and women to continue to speak up and keep us all open mined. The intersection of feminism and disability is something I care deeply about and would love to explore more.

*TRIGGER WARNING* With one of today’s articles on Feministing’s main page being Eesha Pandit’s coverage of the NC victims of eugenics sterilization being compensated, as well as the training I participated in for the organization I work for, I got to thinking about just how vulnerable women with disabilities are to sexual assault – and how the [...]
