Two trans men in the U.K. have been convicted of sexual assault and obtaining intimacy by fraud, respectively, for not revealing their gender at birth to their partners. I wrote about it here:

I wrote a piece about makeup and the morality of telling women to wear it: http://paintingonscars.wordpress.com/2013/04/28/who-you-telling-to-wear-makeup/

    Seconded!!!

An ultimately good piece, but – “Full social integration to me means that disabled people are measured by their accomplishments and deed, not their disabilities.” I’ve seen more or less the same line in repeated in articles since Pistorius’s arrest and I’m not really comfortable with it. It sounds like yet another iteration of the [...]

As a woman with dwarfism, I do remember how narrow mainstream beauty standards are. I understand that calling unconventionally attractive women “beautiful” and “ladies” is one way of broadening the definition of beauty and of opening up the mainstream’s mind. But it still supports the idea that beauty and elegance are very, very important for [...]

I’m not wild about it. It has that stylish/high-class/fashionista ring to it, related to women saying, “Hey, Beautiful!” to each other. Which is totally fine as a form of affection, but doesn’t feel explicitly *feminist* to me because it’s a subtle reminder that the quickest way to make a woman feel good is to make [...]

Thumbnail A SYTYCB entry “What’s Wrong With A Boy Who Wears A Dress?” asked The New York Times magazine on its cover last week.  Despite that the flippant headline sacrifices sensitivity for salability, at least it’s shedding light on the subject.  I know so many men and boys and trans individuals who wear dresses for so many [...]

Thumbnail A SYTYCB Entry Anyone who supports a woman’s right to make her own reproductive choices acknowledges that there is no right way for everyone.  As Jos pointed out this week, there are many, many reasons for having an abortion and for being pro-choice.  It will only help the cause of reproductive freedom if we recognize that there [...]

Re: “How To Be Friends With Another Woman” and “Women are not funny” – I read posts like that a lot because I do want to soul-search and explore why I sometimes gravitate toward the guys’ table at parties and at work, and why I often find myself trusting men more than women on a [...]

What I’ve never liked about Maureen Dowd is the way she focuses so much on style and image like the leader of a high school clique. In 2008, Obama – both Obamas, in fact – certainly earned a lot of praise for their innovative, hip approach to campaigning (from the “Yes We Can” video to [...]

A great, necessary post, Chloe! Hating your body is SO ubiquitous and it’s been my theory that the openess with which women talk about hating their bodies is what fuels it. Example: Someone says, “Oh, god I hate my huge belly.” Friends will often dispute this supportively, saying, “No, you’re not fat at all! Your [...]

“I’d rather be feared than afraid.” I don’t think this is a very helpful approach. I don’t like the idea of wishing to be high up in a hierarchy. The hierarchy is the problem. Fear is both the result of AND the motivator of violence. Violent men develop misogynistic views of women because they see [...]

Very glad to see Andrea Grimes’s post about the ever-present materialism associated with getting married. We’re all materialistic to some degree, but weddings and the middle class family model still assert that women ultimately want presents and shopping sprees to be fulfilled. (Men just want sex, of course, and will provide the ladies with pretty [...]

I think I understand what Cara’s trying to say – that the solution is not to condemn a gender but an attitude. And this absolutely bears repeating. She also seems to be trying to say that part of female privilege is rarely being considered a suspect for a violence. This also bears repeating because, as [...]

As a former foreign exchange student to France and the former host sister of a student from Germany, this is very chilling news. Unfortunately, exchange organizations have such a hard time finding families willing to host that I am not surprised if many volunteer area representatives lower their standards when trying to place students. (Similar [...]

I have to say the most moving Feminist Harry Potter submission for me was this one, also by Chloe: http://feministharrypotter.tumblr.com/post/19149748826/h-t-chloe-angyal#notes The first time I saw that scene in the film, I wanted to throw my shoe at the TV. I’ve seen so many like it before and now Harry Potter was breathing new life into [...]

I’m addressing this to Chloe because I’m a big fan of her writing: I realize the VERY good intentions of your post: celebrating our bodies as they are. But the emphasis on what you can “do” (= ability) still made me quite uncomfortable as someone with disabilities. Usually when one writes a piece meant to [...]

Why did you leave out Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Argentina and South Africa? Is there some criteria their marriage equality laws are not following?
