  • Ultimately, Huckabee is repeating the same old Republican talking points–that government policies should be promoting independence, not dependency. Which great, but not all American women can “control their reproductive system” without healthcare access. So, there’s your problem. Also, I find it laughable that he thinks American women are taking BC so it lowers their sex [...]

“The fact is her intent matters little in the face of what is actually happening: the reinforcement of longstanding racist narratives that blame people of color for problems of which we are not the major perpetrators – and of which, often, we are actually victims.”

    Posting for emphasis. Sing it!

“Why aren’t we critiquing wealth by taking hits at golf or polo or Central Park East?” What 16 year old (white or black) wants to critique wealth by critiquing golf or polo? I’m serious! :) I mean, I guess, Jay-z’s involvement with The Great Gatsby is the closest thing we are going to get to [...]

  • athenia commented on the blog post The Skyler White problem: can we accept complex female characters?   1 year, 2 months ago · View

The only complex woman—a woman who is simultaneously allowed to be both the heroine and morally questionable–I can think of is Nancy Botwin from the tv show Weeds, and she’s white and upper class. I’m surprised that you didn’t mention Cersei from Game of Thrones. I think how her character is handled is a lot [...]

Hey Amy, I’m going to have to side with the professor on this one. Why? Well, cuz if we are going to be “honest” here, if doing the actual writing of a book was the *sole* criteria of getting your name on the cover of a book, I hate to break it to you, but [...]

  • I’d really be interested in learning more about these women’s anti-abortion views. Because from looking at these pictures and whatnot, this does seem like a natural thing to do when you believe that babies are “gifts from God”–dolls that don’t need welfare checks, aren’t disabled, aren’t hungry, won’t go to school, don’t need healthcare etc. [...]

  • Yeah, I think it was a poor choice on Dodai’s part to frame this as a “uniformity” issue rather than a plain ol’ beauty ideal issue. Cuz that would be boring and not adhere to racist notions about Asians. :(

Are there any pics of said boobs breastfeeding? If so, then we’ll talk.

  • athenia commented on the blog post Mia Love demonstrates Republican senselessness   2 years, 1 month ago · View

That’s great for her, but what most Republicans don’t understand is that many people in America that earn so little money that they do not have the luxury of “getting back” their money from the government. Additionally, it’s much better for *everyone* is BC is accessible as much as possible.

Since the criticism of slutwalk from WOC, I always have a hard time wrapping my head around the issue, but I think your article does a great job of continuing that conversation. More please!!

Someone should ask Mr. Galloway if he would like his partner to ask every time before they stick something up his orifice. I’m sure things like that just don’t “happen.”

If you are interested in becoming a freelance book reviewer, I know that the National Book Critics Circle is always eager for new members! http://bookcritics.org/ Of course, the perks of the members do seem to support the above article–there’s a definite “culture” there that might not appeal to, say, someone interested in reviewing YA books. They also forgot that Britain doesn’t only consist of “Anglo-Saxons” but a variety of races as well. Race is a part of their history just as much as America’s.

  • Well, I think the question is–what does “passing the megaphone” look like? Does that mean Melinda Gates should appoint a spokesperson? Have a team of spokespersons? Who should these spokespersons be? I also think we need to be aware too that even if she does pass the megaphone, the megaphone may no longer be a [...]

  • Well this just means I’m going to have to wear my “I love Michigan Vaginas” and “Michigan Vaginas” t-shirts on planes from now on!

  • athenia commented on the blog post “The Scarcer Sex”?   2 years, 6 months ago · View

I think a lot of it has to do with money. I have a friend who graduated from college without a job–she was really interested in politics and so I suggested that perhaps she run for office. She spoke to one of her poli-sci professors and he told her that she would need at least [...]

  • athenia commented on the blog post Sandra Fluke and the birth control divide   2 years, 7 months ago · View

I think the problem is though that with the healthcare law, the government will be paying out subsidies for people to buy their own insurance which people look at essentially supporting abortion and contraception with taxpayer money etc. But at the end of the day, these people don’t care how a person gets contraception and [...]

  • athenia commented on the blog post Dress Code?   2 years, 7 months ago · View

You should make them wear suits. Blazer, button down shirt and slacks. Some people might still find themselves not work appropriate, but suits can’t be confused with “not professional.” If suits might be too much to ask, perhaps just a button down shirt and a certain type of pants? That way the people you serve [...]

We talk a lot about “safe spaces” in the feminist community, so I find Flanagan’s solution of a safe space interesting. However, she thinks this space is at home. “In many respects a teenage girl’s home is more important to her than at any time,/b> since she was a small child. She also needs emotional support [...]
