  • Crap articles and writers like Katie Roiphe are why there even had to be a moment years ago in my kink evolution where I struggled to reconcile it with my political principles. … And then I realized that all that nonsense crap was, well, crap, and found better partners. The end!

Nrgh. Word up to both Angi and Jenny, this ad makes me “wtf?” on so many levels. What does veganism have to do with TSA scanners? What does veganism have to do with being proud of tits? What does being proud of your body have to do with objections to TSA scanners? What do TSA [...]

Yaaayy!! Please keep us informed, I can’t wait to see what you write. What I think would be neat, would be a sort of cultural exchange, wherein Western feminists go through a day or a couple of days or weeks, whatever, of wearing conventional muslim dress including hijab, just to see how it feels to [...]

  • Heather commented on the blog post Mounting Evidence that BirthorNot.com is an Anti-Choice Stunt   3 years, 9 months ago · View

Ahem, more to the point is the fact that they had one unplanned pregnancy before getting married, that didn’t succeed (indicating they chose not to abort then either), and two planned pregnancies that ended in miscarriage. Who in their right mind aborts a (healthy) pregnancy when the’ve been TRYING to get pregnant? And who actually plans [...]

  • Heather commented on the blog post Mounting Evidence that BirthorNot.com is an Anti-Choice Stunt   3 years, 9 months ago · View

Uhm, honestly, not to be a bitch but I think the sheer fact that they put up the site should be proof enough that it’s 1) a stunt 2) I can’t imagine anyone with genuine pro-choice motivations would turn around and put THEIR choice into the hands of complete strangers. I am usually all for [...]

Teeheehee. Food baby. That one always makes me chuckle. I liked this post, but I actually enjoyed all the comments it’s generating even more. I think it’s vitally important that we be constantly refocusing the conversation about “thin/pretty” to “healthy, whatever that means.” Because there’s a lot of b.s. out there about sizes, for people [...]

  • Heather commented on the blog post Sarah Palin keeps telling that lie about health care reform funding abortions   3 years, 9 months ago · View

    Nrrrrgh. Exactly.
Though I can’t help but feeling like it’s only a small minority of people that are willing to point out how these ARE outright lies, and dangerous ones. Or maybe I’m just missing something…?

  • Heather commented on the blog post Hey, let’s talk about how great Title IX is!   3 years, 9 months ago · View

Cynthia, you certainly make a very good point… but I side more with Bruno, and for other reasons as well. I was listening to a piece on NPR about this issue just thursday morning I think, and the guest on the show commented that enforcing Title IX has pushed schools to add new “sports” like [...]

  • Heather commented on the blog post Why Women Fake Orgasms   3 years, 9 months ago · View

Hrn. I have complex feelings on this issue. (No shit Shirlock?) On the one hand, I really can not fathom faking, and am sort of morally opposed to this idea of faking orgasms because it’s antithetical to the kind of honest sexuality that I want to be having. However I guess I cannot deny another person’s [...]

Maybe I’m also one of those “condescending liberals”, but I think that the inconsistancies you observed, often come about because a lot of people here and semi-internalize the rhetoric behind spouted by particular candidates (not laying blame on any one side of the ideological divide here), but do not necessarily investigate them thoroughly enough to [...]

  • Heather commented on the blog post In His Shorts: What Happened to Male Birth Control?   3 years, 9 months ago · View

Some (quasi-cultural) considerations I would like to point out: – The post above touched on this a bit, but I think it deserves repeating more bluntly. The side-effects aren’t all fab. or miniscule related to hormonal birth control. Some women experience lowered levels of sexual interest while on hormonal birth control. In fact, in some [...]

  • Heather commented on the blog post Female College Students Deserve Better   3 years, 9 months ago · View

Mrm.. I could be just really late to the party on this, and maybe this is already embodied in some program already… But it seems to me that when organizations/businesses can not be trusted to report the straight facts about themselves, we usually create watchdog groups to aggressively destribute accurate information and call said organizations/businesses [...]

Ann, I would counter that “yoni”, at least, is not simply a made up word, but a sanskrit word referencing the vulva in rather reverential terms. It may be alone in that respect in words for female genitalia, but let’s give it the credit it’s do, ya?

  • Heather commented on the blog post Videos/Media to help convert family members to Feminism?   3 years, 9 months ago · View

I don’t have any good links or anything, but my first impulse is to maybe ask your dad, sort of the quintessential, “Ain’t I a woman too?” I mean, does he just ignore your gender, or just your hopes/dreams/etc.? (Neither of which is okay.) It would be helpful if you could give us some more [...]

  • Heather commented on the blog post Stephen Fry claims women don’t really like sex   3 years, 9 months ago · View

Have you read the whole article? Because imo the title to this feministing post doesn’t really do justice to what he was actually saying. IF the article was an accurate portrayal, it would be suffering from some highly flawed logic… For starters: Straight hook-up culture DOES exist, but, like the gay community, promiscuity and anonymous [...]

  • Heather commented on the blog post Breastfeeding: It Does a Body Good (as in, makes it look better)   3 years, 9 months ago · View

It only works as a form of birth control so long as the woman is breastfeeding pretty much constantly, to prevent the return of ovulation. Continuing to breastfeed doesn’t inherently mean that a woman is gauranteed not to get pregnant. So nay, not a decent form of birth control.

^this. Fer srs. I almost wish people would stop arm-wrenching the bigots into offering weak-kneed apologies for what they clearly almost always only mean to say “I’m sorry I got caught.” It really doesn’t serve the interests of anybody, when we get these sort of statements, because it encourages this idea that people can say [...]

  • Heather commented on the blog post Twitter Responds to #GawkerFAIL on Christine O’Donnell   3 years, 9 months ago · View

I think it’s important to note, for one, that the Gawker piece is not (at least, presuming that at least from Gawker’s side, it’s not fabricated internally and that someone actually did submit it to them in full) even written by their staff. So therefore, whatever misogynist and offensive comments that are contained IN it, [...]

  • Heather commented on the blog post Women’s Tattoos and Piercings   3 years, 10 months ago · View

Oh, I guess I could also add, that I did a tattoo design for my ex also ages back, his first tattoo. It’s kind of odd to think about now, that my art is on his body, but it doesn’t bother me too terribly much because it was just a request of his, not anything [...]
