First, I just want to say that I am sorry this happened to you. It’s not funny and it’s not your fault. You deserve support and you have the right to report it if you choose to. If you are a student at a college, you can go to your campus counseling center and talk [...]

  • It would also make it much easier to discuss with prospective sexual partners, many of whom (in my experience) don’t know much about it, don’t realize that even without a diagnosis they may have been exposed, or what it does and does not mean for their sexual health. I know due to prevalence, there is [...]

    Thanks for your comments!

Frottage could work. As long as people don’t pronounce it FROTT-age (shudder). I tend to use the term “fooling around” because it hints at more than making out, but less than sex, but it’s still so different for everyone. I’m so glad other people hate the term dry humping too!

Heteronormative disclaimer.  I’m writing from my experience as a het-, cis- woman. Leaving aside the horrible finger analogy, I tried to follow this advice .  I really did.  I read it and disagreed with it, but I happened to have a date that very evening and thought maybe I’d give it a try.  The first date, drinks at [...]

  • I’ve been singing Storm Large’s “Ladylike” ever since I first heard about this.
“She’s great and she knows how to wear the pants and the rest of your clothes. WTF is ladylike if ladies like to do wtf they like just like you?” It seems like the perfect choice for this situation.

  • I very rarely “act like a lady”- I’ve been told I swear too much, enjoy/want sex too much, get angry and yell. The time I can recall feeling pretty bad ass was at a college party and this big guy, who was a well-known conservative on campus, had a bottle that wasn’t a twist off [...]

The Clip Show.  It’s one of my favorite motifs for catching up on/mocking reality TV that I wouldn’t be able to sit through on a regular basis, even with my DVR helping the process along.  It’s how I’ve come to know the cast of the Jersey Shore, the Real Housewives (other than the OC- which [...]

Correction: Brunswick’s population is roughly 15,000 . And for a state with 1.3 million people, that’s actually a pretty significant “city” even if it’s officially known as a town. We know that Maine’s not a bustling metropolis and most of us recognize that that can be a positive. But most of us resent the implication that [...]

This only seems to be the call in sexual violence cases. I have never heard someone who was the victim of a hit-and-run accident be referred to as the “accuser.” Nor do we typically refer to people who have been physically assaulted as “accusers”; they are easily accepted as victims. No one writes angry letters [...]

If you’re in Maine, you may have heard a lot about LD 1046. This bill would make business owners the principal decision-makers with regards to whether trans individuals can use the bathroom of their gender or their “biological” sex (what about intersex individuals? Does this mean we’ll need roughly 42 differently-assigned bathrooms?). This is being [...]

I noticed a little something in a few of the clips shown of Keith Ablow (yes, he of the gender-panic diatribes against the adorable J. Crew ad where a mother and son are shown and the boy’s toe nails are painted pink).  In multiple clips on Fox News, he is wearing a pink tie (see [...]

Well, I certainly recognize that card-givers run the gamut, but I still can’t imagine anyone taking this card seriously. I don’t think my 87 year old grandmother believes that kitchen appliances made her marriage a success and impart that bit of wisdom to me via greeting card. I also would venture to say that brides [...]

While shopping at Target for a card for a bride-to-be, I came upon this card.  “Everything you need to be happy forever” includes a toaster, a mixer, a blender, a tea kettle, a wine glass and a frying pan.  I opened the card, hoping it would include a message like “at least in your kitchen” or [...]
