Former Israeli President convicted of rape, facing real jail time

Former Israeli president Moshe Katsav was convicted earlier this month of rape and sexual harassment of several employees, and can now get up to 16 years in prison for it.

The conviction is seen as a very significant dent  in Israel’s male entitlement culture, as well as a victory for women’s rights groups and even the Israeli judiciary, which has shown that it can hold accountable those who occupy high positions in the government. The Israeli Prime Minister approved of the decision as well, saying:

“The court sent two clear and sharp messages: that everyone is equal and every woman has the full right to her body”

Here’s an article from Ha’aretz about the importance of this decision in Israeli feminism/problems that remain

Suprisingly, high heels are bad for your feet

This may not be a huge feminist issue of the decade, but I found it extremely comical and sad that “wearing high heels” made this msn health topics list of “Suprising” Unhealthy Habits. Not that the rest of the list is exactly rocket science, but this one is just amazing.  I wonder if they actually believe women wear high heels for their health benefits. Or, may be its a ‘guilty pleasure’ of ours. Or may be its just a ‘habit:’ see, I put them on once in the seventh grade, and then just forgot to take them off. Ooops. But now it turns out they are unhealthy, too! And here we all thought that debilitating cramping pain at the ...

high school football player kicked off the team for pink cleats

Last month (October, breast cancer awareness month) many people, including NFL football players wore pink in support of breast cancer patients. In Mississippi, a high school football player wore pink cleats given to him by his great grandmother to practice*. Both his grandmother and great grandmother are breast cancer survivors, and he wore the shoes in their honor. This, apparently, did not go down well with the coach, resulting in confrontation over the cleats and Sheppard’s dismissal from the team. The school denies that this has anything to do with pink specifically – which does not really add up considering he wore cleats of different colors (shown in the video) before with no problems.

I feel really bad for the ...

What’s the Difference Between Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan?

Rebecca Macatee asks what is the difference between Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan that makes the media and the public view them so differently. Drum roll…

Oh by the way. Be an angry feminist. Totally.

Media tackles fading gender roles – AKA man-gagement and Mr. Mom

Two articles on shifting/fading gender roles in the United States: one is about engagement rings for men (‘man-gagement,’ get it?) and the other about stay-at-home dads and breadwinner moms. I found the substance of both really interesting – the engagement ring article is from a music blog, so it approaches the topic from a more anecdotal point of view than a scientific one, as related to the engaged musician. But it does talk about Brazilian and Argentinian traditions of engagement rings for men, which is something that came as a pleasant surprise to me. The article on parenting roles is more serious, citing statistics and experts.

But what spoils the party for me a little bit is the semi-humorous, ...

Facebook’s latest attempt at gender equality is still male-centric

So after nearly half a decade, FB woke up to the fact that women use it, too. Now if you check your gender in your profile as “female” and do not have a profile picture, the default picture assigned to you by facebook will have a “girl” silhouette with shoulder-length hair. If your gender is checked as “male,” you will still have a “boy” silhouette with short hair and a sort of a mohawk. (For those who did not know/realize, previously both ‘male’ and ‘female’ subscribers had the ‘male-looking’ silhouette, which lead to many people complaining about Facebook’s seeming disregard of the presence of women on their website).

HOWEVER. If you decline to check your gender in your profile, your default ...
