One girl’s views on the downsides to being single, and my rebuttal of how they can be upsides

I stumbled upon this blog post, and needless to say this is EXACTLY the type of thing that bugs me.  So, here’s my response to this girl’s list of the downside to being single, and how they can be upsides.

*ahem*
1.  Unreachables
Yes, it does suck not being able to reach the middle of your back, especially when you’re trying to apply sunscreen.  But even if you have a boyfriend, who’s to say he’d be there when you’re applying the SPF?  This is a pretty lame reason to dislike being single.  Especially since now they make sunscreen in a spray can.

2. Moving
Isn’t this what family is for?  And if family isn’t available what about the usual bribing your friends with alcohol and pizza?  I mean, if all you want is to see some hunky guy get sweaty while moving your things, just hold an open call and cast movers as if you were casting for a movie.  The downside here, is that it’d cost you money.  But again, family and friends are cheaper (if not FREE!).

That’s My Bush!

I just had the pleasure of reading Joan Jacobs Brumberg’s “The Body Project”, a fantastic look at the evolution in the way young girls look at themselves, and try to uphold to the everchanging tides of what makes them appealing and sexually alluring to men.  I really enjoyed the beginning of the book and its coverage of menstruation, and how there were “appropriate” ways to handle your business leading into the hard to avoid consumer merchandising that brought women’s natural business to the forefront and ultimately in the hands of men to profit off of.  The chapter about the clearness of skin was especially sentimental for me, as I know all to the well the pressures laid upon teenage girls ...

Call me a crazy cat lady, at least I’m happy

The stigma of the "Crazy Cat Lady" is a tired character.  Much like that of the Spinster.  The connector here is, of course the (knee-shaking, sweat breaking, :insert blood curdling scream here:) Single Woman.

I’m currently reading "Bachelor Girl: The Secret History of Single Women in the 20th Century" by Betsy Israel.  This book takes an interesting look at the cultural phenom throughout the ages known as the Single Woman. And how horrid she is! Betsy Israel does a great job of painting the cultural stance on single women and all the evil they inflict on the world for not upholding to social norms.  She covers how the view of the Spinster ...

Other people’s opinions policing my body and my rights.

Today was quite possibly on par with what a day in hell might be like.  And here I sit, frustrated and annoyed, coping with the events of today and why, oh why, I’m being denied the basic right to govern my own body.

Like most of you out there today, I’m on birth control.  Why?  Because I don’t want to get pregnant (stating the obvious…I know).  But unlike some of you, my reasons for not wanting to get pregnant are different from the norm.  Sure, I’m 25, I have half my life to live, I like going and partying and being a social butterfly.  I work a job that pays the bills…barely, and I have two lovely cats that depend on ...
