The Death of Osama bin Laden

Cross-listed at theFword

While most blog posts about this event are already up, I feel it necessary to write my own post to untangle my mixed reactions to this event. Let me preface this by saying: I completely understand (and hope) that this provides a sense of closure to my friends who lost loved ones on 9/11. I just find it unfortunate that it takes more death to feel that we have reached justice.

After reading on Twitter (thank you, social media) that Osama bin Laden was allegedly dead, I rushed downstairs last night to catch President Obama’s speech, which I then waited an hour to see on CNN (which an older Republican in the room remarked as ‘communist’; ...

To Veil or Not to Veil: Veiling Made Illegal in France

This post is crosslisted at theFword

France’s ban against veiling began today, which makes it illegal for women to wear burqas or niqabs (full face veils) in any public space. A woman who repeatedly insists on veiling can be charged over $200 and will be required to take “re-education classes” (whatever that means). Police arrested 19 veiled women on Saturday who were protesting the ban in Paris.

Interestingly, anyone who forces a woman to veil “through threats, violence, constraint, abuse of authority or power for reason of their gender” risks a large fine and a year in jail. Does this part of the law support gender equality and women’s choices? It would if the women choosing to veil (or not to veil) wouldn’t be ...

Take Back the Campus: An Alumna’s Perspective

This past weekend I returned to my Alma mater, filled with excitement and nostalgia, to present a workshop on dichotomized sexuality. After the exhilarating experience of educating fellow youth, I attended another workshop on masculinity. The adrenaline high from my own workshop wore off as current students began to express frustration over lack of action by the administration in recent sexual assault cases. One female student last semester reported sexual assault, went to the sexual grievances board, and was told there was “lack of evidence”. The perpetrator was let off with no consequences and proceeded to sexually assault another student that weekend. The first female student left campus and the male has since fled campus. This means that he can ...

Shame on Me?

From http://thefword527.tumblr.com/post/4028476461/shame-on-me

The personal is political. This is sorta feminism and activism 101. But I hate the feeling when I’m reminded of this in my own life. Too often, I am in situations when I visit family in which I feel misunderstood or dismissed because of my “radical” views. (Sidenote: when did wanting equality become radical?). Even more so, I hate the uncomfortable and suffocating feeling in the moment I realize a romantic partner holds anti-feminist beliefs, either consciously or not. It’s hard not to feel like a moron when I ask myself how I didn’t see it before. I quickly cut that line of thinking off though to avoid self-blaming but at the same time I am partly responsible for the partners I ...

Love & Hip Hop

As a feminist who loves hip hop, I was intrigued to see Love & Hip Hop on VH1. I am overwhelmed 10 minutes in. To see Fabolous’ girlfriend in tears because he has kept her a secret for 8 years is the behind-the-scenes look at the hip hop industry that the listeners don’t usually see. I think about the lyrics and videos of rappers like Jim Jones and Fabolous and can’t imagine what these ladies feel when they hear/see them. As a listener of both of these artists, I had NO idea either of them were in long-term relationships.

Part of me was frustrated that the women stick around for years with infidelity and no commitment but then I realized I was ...

The Day after IWD

IWD and Feminist Coming Out Day were kind of like Christmas to me. The buildup was filled with excitement and anticipation. And just like the day after Christmas or your birthday, I felt the sadness that the day had passed and wondered if we would remember in a week all the important sentiments the day signifies. I still felt inspired by all yesterday’s pro-woman activism, news, and events when I woke up this morning…until I saw the email circulated by fraternity brothers at USC.

If I could speak to these boys (because, let’s be honest, they are FAR from being men), I would say the following:

Dear kappa sigma brother(s) at USC,
This is FUCKING DISGUSTING. I hope your fraternity chapter is suspended. You seriously wrote ...
