Penis Size

This post is going to be a little scattered and wonky so hold onto your hats!

I have a job which allows me to frequently communicate with teenagers.  This means the topic of conversation often leads to sex.  Teenagers have to figure out their sexuality and stay safe and process a whole lot of information to do so.  Sometimes I might be the only adult in their lives that they feel safe enough to ask their sex questions.  Their parents might just tell them to never, ever do it or to make sure to use birth control.  This is fairly inadequate but an improvement on the sex education that I received.  It does nothing to address sexual pleasure or issues of consent.

Anyway, the topic of penis size came up and the comment was made that the reason the girl had bad sex was that the guy had a small penis.  I cringed at this remark but I simply did not know how to answer it.  I later kicked myself for not saying that penis size doesn’t matter and good sex is not based on that.  Of course, this sort of conversation would make a lot of co-workers uncomfortable.  And I have to admit it makes me uncomfortable to say that to impressionable youths, even though it’s completely true.

But my discomfort with teenagers is not the reason I wanted to post here.  I often fear that denigrating men based on their penis size may be ...

Pregnant Bellies are gross

Somebody in my life made that comment today.  It was somebody that I have a lot of dealings with every day of my life.  I was completely floored that she said it.  I could understand it coming from a man or I should that I would have expected to hear that kind of judgment of womens’ bodies from a man.  I mean, I remember all the kerfuffle about Demi Moore showing her pregnant belly off on the cover of that famous magazine.  How dare a woman put herself on public display.  Why, the only time when a woman is displaying herself is acceptable is when her goal in life is giving all the straight dudes a boner.  So ladies, go ...

Thoughts about Harassment

When it comes to sexual harassment I have seen it all.  I lived in a small town in Saskatchewan called Lucky Lake that was absolutely infested with mysoginists.  At 12 years old I learned to expect having loose change hurled at me from passing cars driven by leering teenage boys.  Throughout the years many dudes have had conversations with my breasts.  Many others have hurled compliments at me from moving vehicles while I was pushing a baby carriage.  At the time I laughed it off as "Well I guess they whistled at me because my kids are proof that I put out."  But really, I was simmering with unexpressed rage.  But what was the point of saying anything?  Any time ...

Letter to the Editor

I wrote the following letter to the editor in response to some recent anti-feminism.  Just in case they decide against publishing it, I thought I would share it with all of you.

Morgentaler award renews women’s rights debate

I wonder why I have not yet seen this headline.  Just about every article about abortion that I have seen emphasizes the fetus while completely ignoring the woman.  While I expect men, especially those in the Catholic church, to act as the uterine police, I can’t help but be especially angered by women who choose to judge women for acting on their bodily rights.  Bronwyn Eyre’s article "Morgentaler award renews abortion debate" was especially disappointing.

My doctor judged me for being sexually active

After reading this community post about a young woman being fed anti-woman lies about sexuality, I remembered a time when I was judged by a doctor for being sexually active.

About five years ago, I decided that I did not wish to have any more children and I went on a waiting list to get a tubal ligation.  I will start off by saying that my medical care in the hospital was excellent and they did a great job of easing my concerns and worries about having surgery.  The ugly part of my surgery experience occurred a few days later when I developed a post-operative infection.

Anti-Feminism on a Pre-Teen Howrse Forum

I am the happy mother of two wonderful daughters.  My oldest girl loves horses and owns one that lives at her grandparents’ farm.  She also visits an online forum that allows her to breed horses at a virtual horse farm.

But just like many online communities, it has a fair number of anti-feminists.  After visiting this site for a few months, she discovered that at one time it was possible to give your horse an abortion.  If you bred her at the wrong time and you didn’t plan it right and you wanted to undo your mistake, you could give your mare an abortion.  Of course this angered many of the Christians on the site that demanded that howrse.com disable this ...
