Trans-Positive Media: NYTimes “The Night Keeper”

In a weekly sound-and-image series called "One in 8 Million," the New York Times tells just some of the city’s untold stories. This week it shares, with respect and poignancy (yay!), the story of a transwoman, Pepper Harris, who sleeps during the day and stays up all night.

Check it out.

ELCA Approves Support of Same-Sex Partners

The Evangenlical Lutheran Church in America, or ELCA, is currently (literally right now) holding its Churchwide Assembly in Minneapolis, MN. Over the past few years, the ELCA has moved closer and closer to acceptance and support of same-sex marriage/partnership, with the voting margin slimming constantly.

My friend Jason is liveblogging via Facebook and reports:

…the ELCA has committed itself to finding ways to allow congregations that choose to do so to recognize, support, and hold publicly accountable life-long, monogamous, same gender relationships.

Yay! Still up for vote is whether ministers can be in same-sex relationships, and probably some other things that I don’t have all the facts on.

You can watch a live feed of proceedings (and read the recently-adopted social statement on ...

“Lunch Is Worth Waiting For”

How I love The Onion. Study: Abstinence-Only Lunch Programs Ineffective At Combating Teen Obesity.

"Although these students were repeatedly warned about the evils of eating and made to take fasting pledges, the abstinence-only program did little to curb their overall appetite for food," the report read in part. "In fact, students at Woodbridge were nearly three times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than children who were given a portion of meat, whole grains, and green vegetables, and then encouraged to skip dessert."

Perhaps more troubling, students who completed the abstinence-only program were reportedly unable to answer the simplest questions about their own digestive systems, and some as old as 17 still believed they could catch high blood pressure from ...

Vintage Sexism: Creepy Vintage Ads

Via Retro Comedy :

While it’s no shock to find outdated gender roles, misogyny, etc., in this collection called "The 15 Creepiest Vintage Ads of All Time ," I really was surprised at how much these ads were able to surprise me.

Besides this "woman as fur rug" to sell men’s pants, you’ll find a wife getting spanked for lazy coffee shopping, unhappy marriage blamed on the woman’s lack of practicing "female hygiene" with Lysol, and so much more. Virgin fetishes, murder- we’ve got it all. It’s like a buffet of creepy. Seriously.

Quick Amazon Irony

So much for queer-related books being hard to find. Today I searched Amazon for "Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass." Result #5: "Tantric Sex For Women : A Guide For Lesbian, Bi, Hetero and Solo, Lovers ."

And I wasn’t even looking for it. Thanks, Amazon!

What If Susan Boyle Couldn’t Sing?

Like so many of us, I’ve been watching (and re-re-watching) Susan Boyle’s moving, ass-kicking, stereotype-defying performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" since it exploded across the net a couple days ago. And like so many of us, I’m genuinely moved to tears every time, and so proud of this woman for having the confidence to overcome the odds (read: judgement) stacked against her.

But something still didn’t feel quite right. Finally, I came across a piece by Dennis Palumbo on Huffington Post, titled "What If Susan Boyle Couldn’t Sing?", that absolutely nails down what’s been bugging me. Palumbo writes:

The unspoken message of this whole episode is that, since Susan Boyle has a wonderful talent, we were wrong to judge ...

Theatre Kid In Search Of Chat-Willing Lesbians With A Little Free Time

Hello Feministers! I’m passing this on as a favor to my friend Kyle and as a move toward queer visibility. She’s a theatre major at a small midwestern college, and she’s having trouble finding lesbians to interview for her senior studio project. Kyle’s been awesome on campus and has helped produce Vagina Monologues and do other good stuff that a small school needs more of. She writes:

My senior studio project is about lesbians and coming out and the experiences they have in social and professional settings (like if being a lesbian has hindered these at all) and then turn that whole thing into a show, kind of like Vagina Monologues.

I have been getting no help from PRISM [campus GLBTQS alliance ...
