Move to LA…

Hey progressive people!!!

I have no idea if this is the appropriate place for this post, but I’m desperate.  So, I am planning to move out to LA shortly, and will be there for a visit during the first or second week of Oct.  I am dying to get involved in an active feminist group, and would love to hear what different people are up to.  Is there anyway we could plan a rendez-vous during my visit?

PLEEEEZ.  any help/advice/info on places to start is more than welcome.  Thank you.

Rachel

Violence is certainly eye catching,

But is it really anything new?

Trigger warning.

A little more than a week ago, Courtney published this article on an ad put out by Do Something to create awareness about the frequency of domestic violence in the lives of teenagers.  Now, the Brits have their version .

(Note this video contains graphic violence.)

The ad was sponsored by Women’s Aid , which is a UK national charity "working to end domestic violence against women and children."  So as part of their campaign, they received the pro-bono help of director Joe Wright and actress Keira Knightley.

As the BBC describes it,

The two minute TV and cinema ad, for the charity Women’s Aid, shows the star being beaten by her partner ...

A woman’s female friends actually matter *duh*

A recent study finds that women’s need for female friends is biological, and the presence of those friends can be scientifically proven to improve a woman’s health.

As a very indirect response to this recent community post , I thought you all might appreciate seeing this article titled, “UCLA study on friendship among women.”   The article itself could use a fair amount of criticism, as it has been written as a kind of flimsy, feel-good piece about women.  However, the topic of the article is kick ass.  Here I’ve chopped it up for you so that you get the good bits and the full gist:

A landmark UCLA study suggests that women respond to stress with a cascade of ...

In addition to problematic apologies…

I recently read these two posts:  "Dear Community Bloggers: Stop Apologizing" and "Stop Apologizing!", both piece published in the community section of Feministing.  While I thought that both pieces were excellent, I’d like to take those ideas a step farther.  After reading another community piece, "Own Your Space!" I thought more about how we as women try to be as non-invasive as possible.

I’ve noticed that many community bloggers end their pieces with comments like, "thanks for reading, if you got that far," or "I don’t even know if I make sense anymore," or, "that was WAY too long."  This is another way that women try to be less forceful.

To me, it’s like, you have something really good to ...

Can men be feminists?

This is my second post (the first one I just wrote earlier today) so please go easy on me.  I totally love and respect the feministing community, and I really would love to see this question debated thorougly.

The question, "can men be feminists?" is one that I have seen a lot of different opinions on and reactions to.  My response to that question is that I think we need a new word.  I think that men acting as feminists parallel in some ways to a white person working for or speaking for black rights.  Men can never be women, they will never experience life from the perspective of a woman, and they will never be subject to the same oppressions ...

5 Things

Four years ago, in second semester freshman year, I had to do a presentation on women’s issues for a general studies class.  In prep for the class, I talked to the most active feminist of my year, and she introduced me to Ani DiFranco, who in turn introduced me to a plethora of feminist conversations.  And I was hooked.  Feminism and issues of gender, I discovered, were fundamental parts of my existence.  They related everything, they were at the foundation of every structure in my life.  It was like someone had opened a window blind, and I suddenly realized the sun existed.
