Transphobia in Seventeen… Wait Not So Much

Seventeen has gone downhill fast the past few months. I already decided I’m going to stop reading it when my subscription runs out. This month’s issue features an article “My Boyfriend Turned Out to be a Girl.” My first reaction was that this was going to be very transphobic and that I should read it to write this blog. Boy, was I surprised.
The story is that Sheri received a text message from a number she didn’t recognize. She responded asking who it was. He said his name was Derek and he attended a high school an hour away from her. They started chatting through text and then on the phone. Finally they met in person and went on their first date. “I had dated other guys, but for the first time, I knew I was in love.” Derek and Sheri then dated throughout the rest of the school year and that summer. He told her he wore chest bandages due to a baseball injury and didn’t want her to touch him below the belt because he wanted to take things slow. He went to college and they talked on the phone and saw each other once a month. But during Christmas break he broke up with her because he heard that she cheated on him.
She later found out he was the one that cheated and the girl persuaded him to break up with her. Derek and his new girlfriend came to ...

Deadgirl Revisited

Awhile back Jessica wrote about the movie Deadgirl. Her response to it was horrified despite the fact she hadn’t seen it. Then davenj, who had seen the movie, gave her opinion.
When I first read about it, I was pretty horrified but at the same time fascinated. I kept reading as much as I could about it. I wasn’t sure whose side to take here. I saved the DVD on Netflix but I was torn if I was actually going to watch it. Well, I received it today and finally did see it.

The Eye 2: Pro-Choice?

After reading the recent blogs on Deadgirl, I was thinking about my favorite horror films and trying to see if there was any feminism in the stories. I’m partial to Asian horror films and one of my favorites is The Eye 2 from Hong Kong. This isn’t exactly a sequel though. The Eye* is about a blind woman receiving a cornea transplant and is seeing ghosts. The Eye 2 does not follow the same characters as the original, rather it also deals with seeing ghosts and is also written by the Pang brothers.
[Warning: May Contain Spoilers after the jump.]

“Of course it was her race that got her in”

Just a quick rant.
I usually don’t read comments on stories on AOL News or linked from AOL Today. There’s always horrible people there. But I thought this would be a story that no one could trash. A homeless student is heading to Harvard. The student happens to be a black girl, so to several people she only got accepted because of her race. It certainly had nothing to do with the fact she graduated fourth in her class, her GPA is slightly below 4.0 and scored in the 99th percentile on state exams. Yeah, it was just her race that got her accepted to an Ivy League school.

Feminist Fuck You: Roeder Sympathizers

This might be more about being a decent human being than a feminist. Whether you are a founder of an anti-abortion group saying Tiller got what he deserved or a writer asking if this act is wrong, there is sympathy for Roeder.
Saying things like “Tiller deserved it” is somewhat condoning what Roeder did. It may be a mild form of it but it’s still sick. According to Roeder’s ex-wife, he started by supporting the killings of abortion providers and bombing of abortion clinics. Do you really want to be on same road as him?
What kills me is that if someone said anything like this about other acts of terrorism like 9/11 or Oklahoma City, people ...

Facebook and Bisexual Erasure

I’m bi and my Facebook lists both men and women in my “interested in” section. I’m also a member of bisexual and GLBT rights groups. It should come as no surprise that queer site ads show up on the site. But it’s always lesbian, never bisexual. I get “Need a Gay Girlfriend?” and “Lesbian Dating” along with gay pride products. I never get bisexual dating ads or bi pride products. The SpeedDate app only allows you to see matches for one sex, not both.
But to be fair this may not be entirely Facebook’s fault. Maybe no bisexual dating sites pay for ad space. I’m not sure if the SpeedDate app was developed by Facebook. If it wasn’t then the ...

Victim Blaming At Its Best

I have previously blogged about comments I received on a vlog of mine about women being unfairly blamed for unplanned pregnancy and rape. I have since disabled the comments on that video but that hasn’t stopped some people from messaging me about it. I’m not going to respond to this guy either but I’m getting it off my chest.
“Blame? It’s not about blame, it’s about personal responsibility. Play with matches and get burned, you don’t sue the manufacturer. Rape not a woman’s fault? Certainly it can be. “
There is no comparison to playing with matches to being raped. “I was walking down the street and I was raped. I guess I should have just stayed home,” or ...

Am I The Only One With A Good Father?

I put this in Random because I couldn’t find any other category it fit into.
I have a great relationship with my father. We often go to the movies and shopping and many other events. As a baby he was my primary caretaker as my mother was attending nursing school at the time. This may be part of the reason I have such an emotional attachment to him. He was also a teacher at my high school. It had it’s down sides like he knew about everything that happened there. But it was also good as I was constantly bullied and sent to the office crying. He was there to calm me down.
But it often seems to me that ...
