Beyond Juno: The Birth Mother Project — CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

Beyond Juno: The Birth Mother Project
Call for Participants

SEEKING: Birth mothers, first mothers, women who have placed a child for adoption from the New York City region, TO BE INTERVIEWED AND PHOTOGRAPHED for a feminist art/activism project, focusing on how social stereotypes about birth mothers compare with their identities and lived experiences.
PARTICIPATION REQUIRES: A physical meeting with me (roughly an hour and a half long), where I will conduct an informal interview regarding the participant’s life and experiences with adoption, as well as capture some portrait photographs. The final product will be a compilation of transcripted interviews and portraits. The aim of the project is to give voice to birth mothers and to encourage their participation in adoption narratives, discourse, policy.
PLEASE NOTE: It is certainly possible for a participant to remain anonymous; a woman’s name can be changed and her face obscured if she prefers.
All prospective participants should CONTACT BirthMomProject@gmail.com. You can also contact me there if you have any questions about the project.
Please forward widely. Thank you!

Calling All NYC Pro-Choice Activists!

Cross-posted at Women’s Glib.
NARAL Pro-Choice New York is hands-down one of my favorite progressive nonprofits. They’re on the political, legislative, and community fronts working to secure safe and legal abortions for all women who want them. They also publish key resources like a pro-choice voter guide (here’s the one for September’s primaries); the Book of Choices, a comprehensive state-wide list of options for women facing unplanned pregnancies (in English and Spanish); a city-wide resource guide for free and low-cost reproductive health care; and a list of open-minded, pro-choice doctors who specialize in adolescent health (again, in English and Spanish).
That’s why I’m thrilled that they are seeking new members aplenty ...

This Teen’s Take on the Virginia Suspension

(Cross-posted at Women’s Glib)
From the Feministing main page, a disheartening story of under-the-radar slut-shaming and bullshit beaurocracy: the Washington Post reports that a teenage girl has been suspended for two weeks – with the possibility of expulsion – for getting caught taking her birth control pill during lunch.

For two decades, many schools have set zero-tolerance policies on drugs. That means no over-the-counter drugs, no prescription drugs, no pretend drugs in student lockers or pockets. When many teens have ready access to medicine cabinets filled with prescription medications such as Xanax and Vicodin, any capsule or tablet is suspect.
Still, some parents and civil rights advocates say enforcement has been overzealous. Stringent rules have ensnared not only drug ...

Your daily dose of horrifying

(Cross-posted at Women’s Glib.)
This is truly disgusting.

A few things I can think of that are really fucking wrong with this, just off the top of my seriously pissed off head: a) the whole objectifying women thing. Just a reminder: we don’t like being defined by our breasts, or any body part for that matter. And b) that said body parts are fucking for sale. In an arcade game. Where you’d pay something like 50 cents in the hopes of winning this horrendous “prize” and probably wouldn’t even beat the machine nine times out of ten.
Stay classy, objectifying motherfuckers.

Propose Your Own Feminist Policy to the Obama Team

Rachel at Feministe passes along Change.org’s call for more participation on their Women’s Rights page – because “the more traffic and participation they get on that page, the more they can push it with the Obama transition folks.”
I sent in my pitch for mandated comprehensive sex education in public schools. Site participants can comment on and vote for proposals, and the top ten in each issue category (women’s rights, education, etc.) will be presented to Obama when he takes office.
Submit your own ideas too!

So you’re never alone…

I’m not sure if anyone’s posted about this horrific Brazilian lingerie line, which features GPS tracking devices.

Lingerie maker Lucia Lorio of Brazil says her design targets the ‘modern, techno-savvy woman.’ The lingerie combination set consists of lace bodice, bikini bottom and faux pearl collar, with the GPS device nestled in the see-through part of the bodice next to the waist. ‘This collection… is a wink to women and a challenge to men because, even if she gives him the password to her GPS, she can always turn it off,’ Lorio said.

Ew.
