iPhone app reports street harassment

Check out this New York Times article about a new way to use technology to address street harassment. Street harassment activist website Hollaback! recently created an iPhone app which allows recipients of street harassment to take a picture of the perpetrator, automatically report the location of the harassment, define the type of the harassment and receive a follow-up email from Hollaback  requesting more information. The power of Hollaback! is in their message that we need to reduce the silence about street harassment by encouraging women and other recipients to address and report the inappropriate behaviors. They have created an extensive database of harassment in cities across the country. Not only is New York City the home to the ...

Electronic dating violence among teens

Gizmodo recently wrote a post about electronics and violence from the results of a survey conducted by the Cyberbullying Research Center.

The Cyberbullying Research Center is interested in better understanding and promoting the concept of “electronic dating violence.” They define it as “emotional or psychological harm in a romantic relationship perpetrated through the use of computers, cell phones, or other electronic devices.”You can find more information between electronic dating and cyberbullying here.

In 2010, this group randomly sampled 4,400 students in the southern United States between the ages 11-18 about electronic dating violence.

All-boy cheerleading squad

“I get the feeling of becoming a Billy Elliot – I dance, he dances; his dad don’t like him to dance, my dad don’t like me to dance.” – 9 year old Harvey Pratt, member of the all boy cheerleading troupe.

Earlier this month, the BBC ran a great story about an all boy cheerleading club from a “tough housing estate” in Yorkshire, England. About 40 boys make up the Dazl Diamonds, who range in age from 3-15 years old. According to founder and head coach, Ian Rodley, Dazl Diamonds is one of four other all-boy teams in the world today.

Cheerleading seems to have had a tremendously positive impact on these boys’ lives in terms of confidence, happiness, and performance at ...

“Take off your clothes or get out of my car” song

I looked all weekend for something to post on the website and nothing stood out. I scoured my Google alerts and checked out the usual news suspects and could not find a single thing that motivated me enough to write a post. So, this morning I sign into Napster and was informed that country music singer, Toby Keith, recently released a new album called Bullets in the Gun.One of my best kept secrets is that I grew up listening and loving country music. I still have a soft spot for some of the classic singers, songs and sounds from the country music I listened to during my childhood. I stopped listening to country music over a decade ago and have no ...

Asking for it: The Ethics and Erotics of Sexual Consent

I’m really excited about this upcoming film Asking for it: The Ethics and Erotics of Sexual Consent which tackles the subject of affirmative consent. The film is based on Dr. Harry Brod’s lecture of the same name and is produced by Media Education Foundation. I’ve seen Harry present this material in a variety of situations and I am impressed every single time. I always leave with a new piece of information or metaphor to use in my own discussions of sexual consent. Not only am I happy for Harry to have his wonderful work recognized by one of the largest and excellent distributors of educational videos to colleges and universities, but this provides us with ...

Thousands of domestic violence cases without an arrest because “victim refused to cooperate”

At MAC, the majority of our efforts are dedicated to the prevention of violence. Primary prevention is a necessary step in making our communities safer. However, numerous things must occur in conjunction with prevention. We need to make sure that there are adequate services for victims, appropriate laws and policies to protect victims and the means to investigate and prosecute domestic violence cases. We also need to make sure that offenders are held accountable for their actions. None of those pieces can be missing. Imagine how impossible it would be to effectively engage in violence prevention work or provide victim services if your local police department cleared thousands ...
