Women take the day

So Ladies, I guess we cleaned house last night–and the senate, plus we kept the White House in very good order.  That’s right, we won–in more ways than one.

1.  A record number of women have been elected to Congress.  Ms. McCaskill, Ms. Warren, Ms. Baldwin, and all the others, we applaud you.  You are shining examples for every woman, every young girl, every person in this nation.

2.  Those who tried to marginalize, insult and defeat us were shown the door.  Todd Akin learned that voters have viable biological defenses that ‘shut down’ those who have no understanding of women’s bodies–or, for that matter, of their minds, hearts and souls.  Now he can go find a legitimate job.  Richard Mourdock, who said that rape pregnancy is a gift from God, was also soundly defeated–just as God intended!  Or I’m pretty sure She’s up there laughing, somewhere.

3.  Barack Obama is still the president.  Joe Biden is still the vice president.  Michelle Obama is still first lady.  Hillary Clinton is still secretary of state.  I am deeply relieved that the work Barack Obama has done from the inception of his presidency (from the rescension of the Global Gag Rule to the signing of the Lilly Ledbetter Act to the appointment of two amazing women to the Supreme Court) will thrive and continue.

We did it.  We made it.  The day is ours.

The Utter Disgrace of the Rape Joke

Meet a rape victim and tell me true: Is her situation funny?

Look into her eyes and see the anger, the pain, the fear that never goes away.  See her struggle to stay strong in the wake of the unspeakable.  See her fight with all she has to continue living anything close to a normal life, after her security and safety have been ripped away from her in a violent and humiliating act.

Is anyone laughing yet?

During a recent appearance at The Laugh Factory comedy club, Daniel Tosh–who I take it is some sort of web-based comic show host, can’t say I’m readily familiar with his work–was overheard openly defending the rape joke–saying in a nutshell that jokes about rape were always ...

In Defense of Lara Logan

In the past few days, 60 Minutes correspondent Lara Logan has been unforgivably, viciously assaulted; once through her much publicized sexual attack in Egypt, the second time in the Internet-based court of public opinion.

Visit a message board that addresses the subject of Logan’s attack, and you’re bound to see just a few messages of empathy and good will for Logan; it’s likely, though, that they are well-concealed by the other messages, words of hate and outright stupidity that pollute the world wide web and seek to soil Logan’s reputation.

“She deserved it.  No woman should be over there.”

Yes, and if she had refused the assignment, she would face the accusation of being a weak female who couldn’t handle her job.

“What did ...

Women Up In the Air

During a trip to the movie theater late last year, I discovered a feminist role model who totally amazed and impressed me with her strength, resourcefulness and fresh ideas.  Perhaps more impressively, this woman lived during the 19th century.

As portrayed by Emily Blunt, Queen Victoria of England is the shining heroine of “Young Victoria,” a film that depicts the early life of the British monarch.  Blunt presents Victoria as a woman who cared about the common people and fought for reform.  She dared to voice freely her ideas and opinions, had a great love of books, and dared to marry for love.  Her husband Albert is portrayed as an intelligent, respectful and—OK, I just have to say it—drop dead gorgeous ...
