Cookie Time

On something of a whim, I decided I needed Girl Scout Cookies this year. It’s been a while since I got my hands on Thin Mints, so I checked the Girl Scout’s website to see if I could get some online. Of course it’s not that simple; you have to buy them directly from Girl Scouts as to support your local troupes. If you’re like me, you may wonder “well why doesn’t my local troupe just set up their own website to sell cookies?” I’ll get to that in a bit.

I went to a local grocery store where the Girl Scouts had a table set up to get a few boxes. There were three girls … and none approached me. A woman who I assume was a leader or mother of one of the girls then greeted me, and asked the Scouts if any of them wanted to help me out. They smiled shyly, giggled quietly, but none stepped forward. So the Troupe Leader ended up being the only person I dealt with when getting my cookies. At the end of the purchase, the three girls said a barely audible “thank you.”

As I walked out, I felt … bad. Just bad about the whole thing.

I remember being a Girl Scout myself. I honestly can’t remember why I ever joined, or why I stayed. Each week we’d sing a few songs, have fruit punch and a snack, maybe play some games. Nothing was ever ...

Misogyny for Free Pizza!

Trigger warning

So my local radio station’s just introduced a contest called “Marry, Bang, Kill.” Catchy title eh? Well each week, they post pictures of three women, and you (because you’re a straight male, right? Who isn’t?) must pick which of these women you’d marry, which you’d put your dick in, and which you WOULD MURDER, because women who you don’t sleep with deserve to die. And if you comment on the pics, you might get a free pizza!

I just … can’t adequately describe how messed up this is. However, if you’d like to go give them a piece of your mind, their website is here.

It’s not even the sexual content that bothers me. Everyone likes to look at ...

Feminist Review: Easy A

I feel like there was once a room full of idealistic people who sat in a room and said “hey, let’s make a movie about the horrible double standard American girls have to face when it comes to virginity.” They came up with ideas about how to make a smart film that dealt with peer pressure, sex, homophobia and so much more. But then some producers got a hold of the idea, and it turned into the sigh-fest that is Easy A.

I feel the trailer gave a somewhat skewed version of what the film’s really about. Olive (played by Emma Stone) is an outcast at her high school, despite being beautiful and intelligent. When her only friend (who ...

Encouraging Adventure

When a woman or girl talks about "dangerous" men, be it a realistic band member or biker, or the fictional vampire boyfriend, it’s often because they want something exciting to happen. I don’t think there’s anything problematic with desiring this type of man in itself, but I do think that the underlying problem is that this implies women can’t have their own excitement.

The implication seems to be that women are boring, that we lead droll little lives that can only be brightened up by an exciting action man, who will lead us off on adventures. No, we can’t have adventures, but we can tag along for the wonderful new world he’s going to show us. And then have his babies ...

I Hate Dramas

Reading through this article , I noticed that they make the same mistake as pretty much everyone else when talking about movies and entertainment- assuming women only like dramas, or romantic movies, or lighthearted fun. I’m not going to see Amelia. Why? Because it looks BORING. Amelia was an amazing person, one who I respect and admire. But if I’m going to spend money on a movie, I want something with action, comedy, maybe someone in a cape. I’m not into dramas.

The main offending comment was "Girls don’t grow up reading comic books or playing video games, or with Transformer or G.I. Joe toys." What? I grew up on all of that. Well not G.I. Joe (an ex-marine father ...

My Way Or The … Wait, No, Just My Way

This is hardly breaking news, but lately I’ve been noticing that in America, there a choices between democrat and republican, conservative and liberal, pro-choice or "pro-life," or religious or non religious, but most of these come down to one simple thing- a group that says do things only my way, and a group that says people are free to do what makes them happy.

A few friends recently kicked off a debate on abortion. Personally, I’m pro-choice, which does NOT mean all abortion, all the time. If a woman wants to have a baby, cool. If a woman doesn’t want to have a baby, cool. If a woman accidentally gets pregnant and gives the baby up for adoption, cool. So long ...

Driving, Safety, Etc

While women’s safety issues are brought up often on this site, my problem is a little less discussed.

Background- I’m in my early twenties, and live with my parents (who own my car). The opportunity has come up to visit a friend who lives about four hours away, and while I’m excited, the question of driving has come up.

I’ve made this drive before, about three times. And I love highway driving. It’s always been easy, and something of a stress reliever. However, it should be noted that I’ve always driven with someone else in the car. I’ve never had to navigate for myself, as someone usually has MapQuest directions handy to read off for me. This time, it looks like I ...

Anyone Else Catch That Late Late Show?

I consider myself a pretty big fan of Craig Ferguson’s show. In the past, there’s been an occassional joke at the expense of gays that made me cringe, but since it’s nearly impossible to find a show on cable that doesn’t use some homophobia, in the past I’d try to overlook what was usually one joke amongst lots of jokes I did not find offensive. However, lately Craig’s REALLY been on Eric Brewer, the transgendered mayor of East Cleveland.

Last night’s show was almost entirely devoted to mocking Brewer. Repeatedly, photos of Brewer in lingere were shown for comedic effect (Men in panties! So silly!). Then the photos were altered to include some celebrities standing next to Brewer (because it’s bad ...
