Orlando in Context

I have lost count of the number of comments I’ve seen on Facebook arguing that the Orlando massacre is about “radical Islam” – that “radical Islam” is our true enemy. It’s a way to claim the massacre and the LGBTQ community for America – this wasn’t a homophobic or transphobic tragedy, or a tragedy that affected queer and trans people of color. It was an assault on our nation.

Like a Broken Record

At the Tony Awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda read a sonnet he wrote about creation and his wife and the mass murder in Orlando. I’ve been listening to it on repeat since yesterday, and tonight I finally bookmarked it so that I could play it whenever I needed to hear it, which is about every quarter hour.

Not a Clue: Stacey Dash on Trans-Inclusive Bathroom Laws

Stacey Dash continued her transformation from 90’s teen nostalgia star to truly horrible person – I mean, “conservative political commentator” - with some predictably transphobic comments on trans-inclusive bathroom laws.  During an interview with Entertainment Tonight’s Nischelle Turner, she said that trans people should just “go in the bushes,” even though that can also get you arrested.

Bathroom Bills and Safe Spaces

Michelle Goldberg wrote a piece about bathroom-panic laws for Slate, arguing that the left had created problems for itself by supporting trigger and content warnings, because now conservatives could use them to hate on trans people.  If you can argue that a book makes you feel unsafe, then why can’t you argue that a person makes you feel unsafe?

I Pitch the Antioch Review

This May, the Antioch Review published, “The Sacred Androgen: The Transgender Debate,” Daniel Harris’s essay about trans people – or, as he opted to call them, “TGs.”  A lot of LGBTQ people, allies, artists and writers are really angry about his obvious transphobia and equally obvious failure to do basic research.  They’re also angry with the editors for publishing Harris’ poorly-researched, poorly-reasoned essay.

My trigger-warning dilemma

Last month, I published a piece on Feministing about being sexually assaulted four years ago.  There’s usually a lag between submitting and posting, and it can vary.  I wasn’t sure how long it would take for my post to actually show up on the page.  I hit submit around dinnertime on September 25th, and then I closed up my office and went home.
