Prostitutes – “Hot or Not” but still a menace

A big Friday Feminist FUCK YOU to Knoxville, Tennessee and the Knoxville News Sentinel!

Knoxville, Tennessee, even with its groups pushing for progressive movements, is still a town of Good-old-boys.  This is extremely evident with a web gallery on the city paper’s site in which visitors can rate women convicted of prostitution a’la Hot or Not.

Additionally, the paper seems to be searching for some action among the prostitute population with recent articles, one titled "Addictions to drugs, thrills keep Knoxville prostitutes on the streets."

Another, which states that Prostitution is not a victimless crime st arts to touch on the idea that not all prostitutes *want* to be in that line of work, and that many of them ("them" being the prostitutes arrested walking the streets or advertising on the street corner, not sex workers who are able to be more discrete or cautious) are in a cycle that they have difficulty getting out of.  The article even goes so far as to *almost* state that the Johns are also legally responsible.  The article is, still, about shocking the readership about how these women are "bad."

Gay and Lesbian students not allowed to use the restroom

Two girls were caught kissing in a high school bathroom in Kentucky.  Their principal decided that in order to prevent this from happening ever again, teachers were not to allow gay or lesbian students from using the restroom. (Pandagon )

The Kentucky equality federation spoke up about this.   But what is even more awesome:

Students protested this decision!

Echoing Student Activism, I think that it’s great to see students recognize and speak out against such discrimination.

So a big "Feminist Fuck Yeah!" to them.

Feminist Comic: DAR

There have been past posts on feminist web-comics and feminst comic books.  I just wanted to add one more comic that I don’t remember seeing on this:

DAR: A Super Girly Top Secret Comic Diary is a (NSFW) webcomic about the life of the artist, Erika Moen.  It typically focuses on her identity of herself, gender, and sexuality.  She started it in college in 2004, during which she identified as lesbian.  She writes about her relationships and heartbreak s as well as about her life in general .  Additionally, she writes about her family’s feelings about her sexuality.  Then, after she gets out of college she meets a man who she *really really* likes.  This ...

Continuing a narrative of abuse, from the perspective of a friend

A few weeks ago I posted about my worry for my female friend.

I was advised by some to continue to be there for her.  Others told me to cut off ties with her.  I would see her at work, and we would say hi.  But we stopped doing things together like we used to, mostly because Y was always there.

The brief background is that my friend, who, after dating 3 guys (named X, Y, and Z), decided to stay with Y, a controlling, manipulative, insecure guy who had no job , never left her side (even when she was at class/work), threatened to kill her previous boyfriends. I encouraged the previous boyfriends to file reports against him to ...

Amazon(Fail) Correspondance

I sent the this letter to Amazon this morning.  I recieved the reply that follows about an hour ago.

My letter:

Dear Amazon,
I am outraged at the current issue regarding de-ranking books.  While Publisher’s Weekly may have claimed that it was "a glitch," your own company had earlier released a statement claiming that these products, including same sex parenting books and Foucault’s sexual theory books, are inappropriate for your normal searching public.
By these standards, I am assuming that you view your purchasing population to be closeminded, heteronormative, and not intelligent. If not, why would all these feminist, gender theory, and queer narratives (Ellen DeGeneres’s biography is inappropriate!?) be removed?
Gay rights are human rights. If you refuse ...

Attempting to understand the VA suspension – and proposed new policies

This was intended to be a comment on "This Teen’s Take on The Virginia Suspension" , but it turned out to be rather long and more complicated than my original thought so I figured I might also work as its own post.  This can be summerized as "I personally also feel that the current ‘Zero Tolerance’ policies are too much.  Not every high schooler self-medicates safely.  What other solutions are possible?"

Four of my friends passed away in junior and high school. One friend died from a reaction to Acetominaphen (aka Tylenol and Midol) that she borrowed from a friend and took for cramps.  Another friend died because he forgot/neglected to take his heart medication for two days.  He kept ...

“Women’s Health” Care Debacle proven through anecdotal evidence

I’m part of that marvelous special interest group that McCain pointed out as not really important because we require “airquotes.” The group that requires “Women’s Health.”

I need my annual exam.  Previous years I’ve gone to a Family Practitioner whose practice had a slightly subtle anti-choice bent.  The first time I didn’t catch it, but the second time I went, there were signs all around about how the clinic respects “the sanctity of life.” It left a bad choice in my mouth so I got my exam, paid my $50 copay and left.

This year I looked for someone else. The Walgreen’s next to my house has a walk in Clinic.  Walgreen’s is the only place in the area I’ve been able ...

Participation in Government

After the Presidential News Conference last night, I, like many subscribers to Barack Obama’s Twitter feed, myspace status, and other social networks, was invited by The Prez himself to offer questions for him to answer at a later date .

See, you post a question, and the other users vote on your question.  I’m assuming that the questions with the most votes will have a greater likelyhood of being answered.

So I posted one. I drew from Shark-Fu’s earlier article where she quotes Alice Waters: "We make decisions everyday about what we’re going to eat," … "And some people want to buy Nike shoes – two pairs, and other people want to eat Bronx grapes, and nourish themselves. I pay ...
