Brilliant Idea?

Okay, so when reading Marc’s comment on sbherold’s post about Dr. George Tiller, I had an Idea.

What Marc said to give me this idea was:

"I only wish there were a bumper sticker that says, "Support the Abortion Providers," abortion provider discounts, abortion provider appreciation nights and such. You deserve it."

And, well, I don’t own a business, so I can’t do anything about the latter two desires, but bumper stickers?  There’s a website for that.  Bumper stickers, t-shirts, buttons, whatever we want.

I move that we, the members of the Feministing Community Blog, set up a CafePress store in honor of the memory of Dr. George Tiller, selling products which honor the devoted service of abortion providers.  And when people purchase an item, the proceeds from it will go directly to a non-profit–I’m thinking Medical Students For Choice, but if anyone has other suggestions, leave them in comments.

The only hitch (and the reason I’m posting here rather than just setting up the store myself and getting to work right now) is that I’m not artistically talented.  My creativity extends to poetry and prose-writing, not to visual arts. I’m sure I could create some thing on Paint, but it wouldn’t be as good as something made by someone who actually has artistic talent.

So…if there’s anyone here who IS artistic and who would like to make a design…have at it.  As many people as want to, I’d like this to be as big of ...

Empathy, Conservatives, Dr. Tiller, and Sonia Sotomayor

(Cross-posted from UneFemmePlusCourageuse. )

You know, I’ve been reading all over the usual feminist blogs, and the blogs they link to, and the blogs my friends on Facebook link to, about Dr. Tiller’s murder. And on nearly all of them, there’s been some asshole anti-choice troll saying something along the lines of, "this doesn’t really matter, because he was a murderer too, and of course I would never condone the murder of any one, but they’re both guilty."

And I responded to the first one I saw, with some pretty choice words–on one of the smaller blogs linked from Feministing. Everywhere else, other people had already taken the torch for me.

And then there was RH Reality ...

The obtuse entitled man

(Crossposted in an edited form at UneFemmePlusCourageuse )

(Note: this is not anti-male.  This is anti one male and others of his particular ilk.)

I gave a speech today on Take Back the Night marches (something I’ve been involved in for the past few years) in my notorious speech class , and wow, pardon , I didn’t define rape for the uninformed entitled twenty-two-year-old men of America! Quelle horreur ! Because nobody could possibly know what that word means unless I, Gen Dusquesne, widely-renowned legal expert, informs them. I mean, Gott in Himmel , maybe all of his forays into the rooms of drunken girls who would never give him a second look sober were rape! Maybe that ...

Racism is still alive in Ohio

Y’know, as proud as I am of my state for going blue this election, let it never be said that there aren’t some real assholes living here. In both my part, the mostly-liberal northeast, and the mostly-conservative southwest.

Let us first tackle the northeast, with the Bastard you probably guessed: Kevin O’Brien, Plain Dealer columnist. Here you go . Now, as I write this I am reminded of what Keith Olbermann said about William Kristol, Rush Limbaugh, and Bill O’Reilly during his "Worst Person in the World" segment last night: "Wait–what does it matter what they say? They don’t matter anymore!" And in a way, he’s right–everything any conservative is saying right now does ...

Nature, Nurture, Culture, Yaaa!

This has nothing to do with elections, nevertheless…

Oh, Speech class. How you constantly infuriate me.

This, by the way, will have nothing to do with the Idiot Boys . It does, however, have to do with the guy I have previously referred to as ‘Seemingly Singular Nice Boy,’ (SSNB) who since that day I have realized ain’t nice. (Was it the fact that he used something I said as his own argument and then, when he misstated it, threw it back as mine, leaving me to defend a mere shell of my actual position? Maybe. It’s also the horrible vibes that seem to suggest both, "I think I am better ...

Thoughts on Pro-Lifers and Anti-Choicers

(cross-posted at UneFemmePlusCourageuse )

Background: back in April I went through training to become a pro-choice clinic escort.  We’re the ones who walk patients from their vehicles to the front door of abortion clinics and talk to them to keep them from having to hear the anti-choice protesters.  Although my training was months ago, I didn’t get to begin escorting until this past Saturday due to the fact that during the summer I was living with my parents, forty-five minutes away from the clinic.  (My school is quite a bit closer.)  It was…an experience, and I am thankful that I have the a.

I’ve said before that I was raised in a conservative household, a conservative extended family, a ...

Dudes, you’re all, like, so ignorant and sexist, like

So to preface, I greatly dislike public speaking. This is after acting in several plays, after taking a high school creative writing class all about class presentations, and after being one of the most talkative people in my classes last year (for the most part). The process freaks me out. The only reason I was able to do Vagina Monologues these past two years was because of all the amazing energy generated by my castmates. And Sleater-Kinney’s song ‘Male Model,’ which is my pumping-up music.
So you can imagine my dislike of the fact that Speech is a core requirement here. And you can imagine why I’d put off until my junior year what is usually done as a fish.

Reaching Out and Welcoming

Hello, fellow Feministing Community members.  In the past couple of months since the Community Blog was started, I have seen how supportive this place can be for young feminists in a world that is often hostile to what we believe in.  Yes, we have our occasional miscreants and trolls—but do we take their crap?  No

I’ve written here and on my own blog about my experiences as a survivor of rape.  Because justice for fellow survivors is such an important issue for me I often find myself reading posts on other blogs about developments on this topic.  Yesterday, while commenting on The Curvature (a favorite of mine and well worth reading, ...
