Stupid sexist swiffer!

Previously posted on EvilSlutopia.com

We’ve all seen those annoying Swiffer commercials in which a mop or broom or duster just can’t get over being replaced by a Swiffer product… this onethis oneextra creepy one .

So here’s a mini-guest blog from my 9-year-old daughter. (The title was her idea.) She really doesn’t like those commercials…

Dear Swiffer,

I think your commercials are totally sexist.

There is no good reason why in all your commercials there is a girl cleaning the house with Swiffer. Why are there only women doing the cleaning? It makes just as much sense that a man would be doing the cleaning of the house. Yes, some women do housecleaning, but some women don’t. And it’s not the only thing that women can do.

In your next commercial I think you should have a man doing the cleaning. The mop or broom can sing the song "Come Back To Me " by Vanessa Hudgens. (I’m not saying that you should actually do that song, because they might not be able to get permission to use it.) It would just be nice to see the genders reversed and have a girl mop singing to a guy using a Swiffer.

It’s also pretty creepy that the joke of the commercials is that your mop or broom are following you around. They’re kind of stalking you. Why would anybody want that? Imagine if it was your ex-boyfriend or ...

Getting to the Point of the #NestleFamily Debate

[Originally posted on Evil Slutopia .]

I’ve been following the #nestlefamily drama that’s been unfolding on twitter for the last few days. It’s kinda like the #nikonhatesbabies incident that happened at BlogHer over the summer, multiplied by 1000. We weren’t at the Nikon party where the trouble started, but we were at BlogHer , so we were interested to watch the conversation unfold and we ended up doing some research, talking to people who were involved, and writing up our own take on what happened .

We’re taking a similar approach with this Nestlé debate – we weren’t at the Nestlé/blogger event that has sparked all of the controversy, but we’ve been reading the conversation as it ...

Read the Fine Print: It Might Save Your Life

Yes, it’s true, we’re still talking about The American Life League’s The Pill Kills Women campaign. The actual protests were on June 6, but we’re still talking about it because there was just so much wrong with it that we couldn’t possibly fit it all into one blog entry. Every time we think we’re almost done, we click on a new page and find a whole new bunch of stupid. We’ve already addressed the ridiculous claim that the pill destroys relationships and the medical flaws in their argument (particularly, how the campaign exaggerates the risks of hormonal contraception as a scare tactic). This time ...

The Pill Destroys Relationships?

Crossposted at EvilSlutopia.com
As promised, here’s our next blog about The Pill Kills Women . Our first installment focused on the medical flaws in their argument (particularly, how the campaign exaggerates the risks of hormonal contraception as a scare tactic).
This time we’re going to take a quick look at some of their other ridiculous claims . Under "Side Effects" they list the damage that using the birth control pill can do to a relationship.

Ways in which the pill destroys relationships:

It easily opens the door for marital infidelity; it especially opens the door for temptation to youth; "a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due ...

The Pill Kills Women?

Cross-posted on our blog EvilSlutopia.com . (We will hopefully be addressing the other issues with this campaign in the next few days as well.)

The American Life League ‘s newest anti-contraception campaign is called The Pill Kills Women . On Saturday, June 6, anti-choicers across the country will be protesting outside doctor’s offices, pharmacies, Planned Parenthood clinics and other family planning facilities in order to "educate" American women about how the birth control pill is GOING TO KILL THEM! OMG! Yeah, whatever. (Last year’s theme was The Pill Kills Babies , which was also bullshit propaganda, obviously).

Now, we’re definitely not saying that hormonal birth control is totally safe for ...

Marriage Equality Bill Passes NYS Assembly, Now On To The Senate!

So same sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Iowa. (And will be in Vermont and Maine by September 2009). We’re really happy for those states, but also pissed off that our own state of New York hasn’t followed suit yet.  That may be about to change, but we have some work to do first.
In April Governor David Patterson introduced a bill to legalize same-sex marriage (one that a majority of New York voters support ). The bill would amend the Domestic Relations Law to give same-sex couples the opportunity to enter into civil marriages, qualifying them for state rights on issues such as property ownership, inheritance, healthcare and insurance coverage. (Note: it specifically says "civil ...

Our Pro-Choice Top Ten

Today is January 22nd, 2009, which means it’s the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and Blog for Choice Day!

This year, we’re all being asked to answer to this question: What is your top pro-choice hope for President Obama and/or the new Congress?

After thinking about this year’s theme, we’d say that our top pro-choice hope is that we can render this question obsolete within a few years. After eight years of being beaten down by the ignorant, sexist, anti-choice Bush administration, it’s understandable that the concept of "pro-choice hope" feels pretty foreign and also kinda awesome right now. But in addition to being pro-choice hopeful, we should also be pro-choice unsatisfied and pro-choice determined and pro-choice ...

Amazon.com’s “Best” Books of 2008

We noticed something interesting about Amazon.com’s list of Editors’ Picks for the 100 best books of 2008 .

Out of the top ten books on the list, only one is written by a woman. And there are only three books by women in the top 25, five in the top 35, and 27 in the full top 100 (including one book co-written by a woman and a man). Now, we’re not suggesting that every list of this type has to have perfect 50/50 gender parity, but these numbers seem kinda skewed to us. Somehow we really doubt that 2008 was just an ‘off year’ for women writers, so we’re forced to conclude that this list can suck it.  It ...
