Fox News makes dumb points about female comedians; I respond

Hey ladies!

Today I published an editorial on Laugh Spin magazine took down a recent story on FoxNews.com, regarding a new crop of female comics with “hot bods.” (As always, Fox is first in asinine reporting – sometimes even when covering actual asses as its subject matter.) I’m reposting it here for your enjoyment. Read on!

With the nature of beauty being so subjective, it’s not surprising to a see a story like this from a news network that approaches nothing objectively. On Oct.12, FoxNews.com published an article that laid claim to an increase in “sexiness” among the newest crop of female comedians. Singled out for focus were Olivia Munn, Carrie Keagan, Anna Faris, and Mila Kunis, whose sexy presence graced the cover of GQ back in July – the first woman to represent the venerable mag’s Comedy issue.

What’s interesting about the Fox News take on this emerging breed of hot bodied lady comics is not the obviously narrow-minded objectification, but rather the article’s curious exclusion of comedy movers and shakers who might not necessarily conform to a rigid notion of attractiveness. If the trend is toward tight buns and flat abs, how does the gasping think-tank over at Rupert Murdoch HQ account for the recent successes of Melissa McCarthy (pictured above), an Emmy winner, scene stealer, and ample beauty in her own right? What about Tina ...

The Daily Woe

I don’t know if anyone has discussed the whole Jezebel v. Daily Show saga at length here yet (shamefully, I haven’t been keeping up with the postings on Feministing much lately, due to a compelling need to lie around stark naked with the AC at full blast all day), but I wanted to at least share what I posted on my own blog about it.

About a week ago, I watched in equal parts abject horror and morbid curiosity as the integrity of The Daily Show was called into question by the folks over at Jezebel. In case you’ve had your head shoved up a Tampax box for the past few days, ...

A conversation with Janeane Garofalo

Hey gang!

So I had the rare and wonderful opportunity to interview Janeane Garofalo the other day, and I wanted to share the story with you all. She dishes out lots of great tidbits on women and their role in comedy (and who would know better), like this one:

And then there’s that ridiculous trope: women just aren’t funny. I would say to that: most people really aren’t that funny. There are tons of comedians and comedy actors who aren’t that funny. It has nothing to do with gender, but it just seems sometimes that women aren’t as funny because they are poorly cast in film; they are poorly written for; they rarely have any of ...

Lesbian couple gets heckled at comedy show: are they right to press charges?

Possible trigger warning

I came across this today, and thought it was definitely worth sharing with you lovely gals:

We told you a few days ago about comedian Guy Earle, who was set to face a human rights tribunal in British Columbia for heckling a lesbian couple at a comedy show in 2007.

The short of it is this: the couple strolled in toward the end of the show and decided to sit right up front, where they began to heckle Earle. The comedian laid into the couple pretty harshly saying things like, “You’re fat and ugly, no wonder you’re lesbians, you can’t get a man; that’s why you’re dykes. You must be on the rag, you stupid ...

Is it too late to blog for choice?

X-posted at my blog, Emmazon Nation.

Well, even if it is, I’m still going to choose to. (Ha. Ha.)

Admittedly, I’m a shame-faced feminist for not having known about this prior to an hour or so ago. It’s the anniversary of Roe V. Wade, and thus, NARAL Pro-Choice is challenging bloggers (for the fifth year, no less) to craft blogo-rhetoric and syntax around the answer to the following question:

In honor of Dr. George Tiller, who often wore a button that simply read, “Trust Women,” this year’s Blog for Choice Day question is: What does Trust Women mean to you?

I don’t know that the answer I could give would differ any greatly for any of those already beamed out into cyberspace, ...

What could turn a blah Monday into a “Fun”day?

Ok, that was inexcusably lame, but this isn’t. It’s naked Margaret Cho!

I love that she gives a shoutout to Liz Phair, too, one of my other all-time "would take barrage of bullets for" fabulous femmes.

Do this mean that Exile in Guyville and Notorious C.H.O. sync up, dark side of the rainbow-style? One can only hope.

So much for aging gracefully

Ever get caught somwhere between a laugh and a little bit of vomit? Yeah, me neither, but that’s kinda where I’m at after seeing this story pop up on HuffPo today:

But Janet and Jane are not twins. They aren’t even sisters. They are mother and daughter. And, in what many will see as a depressing indictment of today’s youth-obsessed society, Janet confesses to having spent more than £10,000 on plastic surgery in a desperate effort to bridge the 22-year age gap between herself and her daughter.

Because who needs individuality when you’ve got £10,000 at your disposal?

What’s this I keep hearing about the economy failing?

Marriage Rights come to Iowa!

Here’s a nice little distraction from my unequivocal hatred of the Final Four (more like Final Snore):

Iowa now becomes the third US state to allow same-sex marriages after Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Iowa is now the first Midwestern state to legalize same-sex marriage. As a Michigander, let me be the first to say, "Woo!" And also, "Hoo!"
