DC Comics: Not One Penny From This Fan Until You Hire More Women Writers

(originally at change.org)

I’m a 20-year-old queer Canadian woman who has been reading comics since I was a kid. Comics mean a lot to me: the characters, the legacy, the expression through word and image —  graphic storytelling is a beautiful art. But the difficult thing about comics is its very “boys-only” attitude. Interacting with male fans is a challenge — often your opinions are disregarded, because surely a woman couldn’t know the first thing about comics.

Women in comics: as rare as tangerine unicorns, apparently

This week at San Diego Comic Con when Dan Didio, current co-publisher of DC Comics, was asked by a fan during the panel why more women didn’t work for DC, he responded by asking: “Who should we have hired?”

Maybe someone should send him a list:

Jill Thompson Ming Doyle G. Willow Wilson Jen Van Meter Emma Rios Colleen Coover Nicola Scott Fiona Staples June Brigman Katie Cook Barbara Kesel Jo Chen Trina Robbins Chrissie Zullo Cat Staggs Bettie Breitweiser Pia Guerra Laura Allred Mandy McMurray And the list goes on!

There are hundreds of women with experience writing, drawing and creating comics– not to mention the infinite number of women writing indie comics. Women like Adriana Ferguson and K. Van Dam, who write and draw popular superhero webcomic Minor Acts of Heroism or M. Palumbo, the artist behind the popular queer sci-fi comic

Girl Wonder: No More

This week at San Diego Comic Con DC Comics announced that Stephanie Brown, former Robin and current Batgirl, would have her name removed from the legacy of Robin.

For those that have not yet heard of the overhaul DC Comics is giving itself this coming September, check out this link for more information. The long and short of it is that DC is taking the universe back to year one and effectively starting from just about square one. The theory behind this is that a young (and presumably simpler) universe will attract new and younger readers.

Another theme is that this new universe will also be more “diverse” and thus will expand DC’s fanbase and appeal to a variety of readers.

This upheaval of course is more than a ...

A Solution to Misogyny: Stop Hanging Out With Those Pesky Womenfolk

At least that’s what the organizers of a large LAN (Local Area Network) party in Texas think. The LAN is being hosted in honor of Battlefield 3, a first person shooter game due for release at the end of this coming October.

Originally the statement released in their FAQ was as follows:

“Nothing ruins a good LAN party like uncomfortable guests or lots of tension, both of which can result from mixing immature, misogynistic male-gamers with female counterparts […] Though we’ve done our best to avoid these situations in years past, we’ve certainly had our share of problems. As a result, we no longer allow women to attend this event.”

That statement has since been amended after word of their boys only club went viral. It now reads as:

“This ...

a perfect sex education program

would teach sexual health and safety to everyone regardless of gender, ability, race, age, desire or class. would teach about consent and all the ways to ask for it. would provide barriers and birth control and hygiene products and counseling without asking for a penny. would be free of shame or pressure— have sex if you want to, and don’t be made to feel dirty for it. would be for everyone, like it’s supposed to be.
