Saturday Night Live: Making Rape Funny?

As many of you probably have seen, Betty White was the host of Saturday Night Live last night, and she was absolutely hilarious. There were many cameos from former SNL women such as Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, and Molly Shannon. This definitely provided some awesome female performers, which SNL has been lacking in recent seasons (not that the women on there now aren’t funny, but there’s definitely an imbalanced ratio of men to women on SNL now). However, one sketch that was aired really struck a bad chord with me, and it got to me.

This skit, called "Scared Straight", has been recurring for years on SNL, and is a prime example of our rape culture in America. In this skit, a prisoner, played by Kenan Thompson, scares three teenage boys into avoiding a life of crime (even though the actual crime these boys are accused of is usually fairly minor). This is done through humorous allusions to movies that are told as if they really happened, and through countless rape jokes. Sadly, these jokes about rape receive roaring laughter, because people getting raped in prison is HILARIOUS!

These jokes are harmful not only because they make light of rape, but they normalize prison rape, as if people (men in this case) deserve to be raped because they committed a crime. However, this is false because A) NO ONE DESERVES TO GET RAPED and B) Not everyone in prison ...

NJ High School’s Hot Girl Contest Hits Close to Home

At my old school in Montville, NJ, a senior was suspended for partaking in a May Madness contest, and he thinks that the punishment was too harsh. In this contest, boys rate girls on their appearance in a March Madness-style bracket.
Normally, I wouldn’t write about a story like this, although it is highly sexist. However, there’s a catch to it that really gets me: my own brother’s started the contest about five years ago. This story has been on websites for USAToday, ABC’s Eyewitness News, and others. It is quite humiliating that not only are people actually sympathetic to the kid who got in trouble, but my own brothers are proud of their newfound “fame” and the attention this ...

AOL’s “13 Ways to Keep Your Husband Happy”

Right before I log into AOL to check my mail, this shows up and I can’t help but read it.
This is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve read. Here are some gems:
“1. After washing your beautiful locks, don’t forget to pick up your hair from the shower drain. It may not bother you but he doesn’t like untangling your hair from his big toe.”
“4. Speaking of…, don’t let yourself go. That doesn’t mean you must maintain a certain weight or length of hair for the sake of your marriage, but it is a gesture of love to take pride in your appearance. You may expect the same from him and you both deserve a mate ...
