Abortion Access Bowl-a-thon Fundraisers

During the month of April theSecond Annual National Abortion Access Bowl-a-thon will be taking place all over the country to raise money for abortion funds.  Abortion funds, such as the one I work with- the Network for Reproductive Options, provide funding assistance for abortion services to women and girls who can’t pay for them- because what is the use of legal abortions if a large portion of the population can’t afford them?

Bowl-a-thon events will be taking place all over the country.  We need our community’s support to make this happen (I’m talking to you, Portland) – so find an event near you, and start striking down barriers to abortion access!  (Let me just emphasize that you do NOT have to be an experienced bowler to participate; heck, I don’t even like bowling- but I like abortion funds).

Question about non-sexist Porn

Hey guys! I remember when I was reading Jessica Valenti’s book, Full Frontal Feminism, she quite briefly mentions a couple sources for non-violent, non-sexist porn. I’m interested in finding these sources, but I had borrowed that book from a friend who lives very far from me, so there’s no way for me to skim through and find it! lol Can anyone help? I’m just curious if any of you can tell me of good sources for porn that isn’t totally evil. lol Thank you!

The Fellatio Myth

Dear Ladies,

As I began my daily ritual of signing onto Facebook after a hard days work, my mini feed was bombarded with messages sent from one boy to the next reading “spread the word my dear friend”, with a link attached below. Out of curiosity, and the bad habit of wanting to know what everyone in my life is up to at every second of the day, I decided to look into this article from CNN.com. The title read “Study: Fellatio may significantly decrease the risk of breast cancer in women.” Immediately I was interested. As I hungrily searched for the quick explanation of the article it read, “women who perform the ...

STD Awareness Month is Almost Over Did You Get Tested?

For those of you who didn’t April is National STD Awareness Month and that means it’s time to get tested.

If your sexually active or were sexually active then you’re at risk and should be tested. Over 19 million people will contract an STD this year in the US alone and with infection rates that high it’s a scary thought to not get tested.

Some statistics to get everyone motivated:

One in every five people have genital herpes. One in four people have a strain of HPV. Chlamydia can have little to no symptoms and be extremely dangerous when not treated. Many STDs are for life.

With that in mind it’s important to take your health seriously. If caught early many STDs can cause little to no ...

Who’s really lying on that casting couch

The Dave Letterman story has brought up an issue I feel is central to women’s lives: how our success is interpreted in the world.
Too often when a woman succeeds in the presence of a famous man, the public assumes she “did it on her back”. No one seems to think that maybe she’s the one with all the brains, but getting none of the credit.
No one has speculated that Dave might be the one who has sought out talented, intelligent women, and got them infatuated with him to advance his own career. That certainly seems to be what happened with Merrill Markoe, who has publicly stated she only stuck around on the show (which btw she helped create ...

Women don’t get higher salaries because they don’t negociate – and they don’t negociate because…

A tweet alerted me to the reason for the persistence of the gender gap and to studies about the true reasons for it. Quite instructive. The Washington Post article states:

Bowles and her colleagues divided 119 volunteers at random into different groups and provided them with descriptions of male or female candidates who tried to negotiate a higher starting salary for a hypothetical job, along with descriptions of applicants who accepted the offered salary. The volunteers were asked to decide whether they would hire the candidates — who were all described as exceptionally talented and qualified. While both men and women were penalized for negotiating, Bowles found that the negative effect for women was more than twice as large as ...

Gun ownership and domestic violence

Day after day, we get fed this line in North America about how most homicides by firearms are gang-related, or done by people with illegal weapons, so that it’s no use regulating gun ownership. However, this article in The Star points out how crimes against women in Canada are the result of legal weapons. The registry in this case won’t prevent murder, just pin down for sure who did it. I know in the U.S. gun-related legislation is a patchwork, but what are the stats down there?
