TIME columnist says to get more sex, get her drunk

Joel Stein’s latest column for TIME, “Date Night, Notarized,” was tolerable. It’s a good idea for couples to have a discussion about what each partner wants and needs. Stein mentions that he wishes to have sex more often:

“I got about halfway through my first request, which required exposing my feelings and the deepest parts of my psyche, when Cassandra rudely interrupted: “I feel extremely objectified,” she said, referring to my request to improve our intimacy.”

At the end of the article, Stein goes on to say that “And, though I didn’t technically get all the clauses I wanted, I did stipulate that on date night, she has to drink a lot.” Referencing his earlier (and, it’s implied, REJECTED) suggestion to his wife that they have more intimate time together, his closing sentence clearly advocates coercing one’s partner into sexual activity by making them intoxicated.

That sentence publicly supports rape culture and, in particular, date and marital rape. Seeing that sentence in print was frightening. I sent a letter to TIME (there’s a link at the article if you click the author’s name), and you should too!

Thoughts on Victim-Blaming

A few months too late, I became aware of a NY Times story published in March 2011 concerning the gang-rape of an 11-year-old girl in Texas. This fine piece of journalism was an example of victim-blaming at its finest, describing the girl as dressing “older than her age, wearing makeup and fashions more appropriate to a woman in her 20s. She would hang out with teenage boys at a playground, some said.” The article then went on to quote residents blaming the girl’s mother, asking questions such as “‘Where was her mother? What was her mother thinking?'”

Though this article does not stand out in the long history of victim-blaming in journalism and most other arenas of social ...

Blackface on Campus

I’m a senior at SUNY Purchase, a small state school located just outside of NYC. Here is a letter I sent to my college’s president as well as other faculty and staff. I came across photos of students at my school who were at one point active in the GLBT community wearing blackface. Yet another drop in the unfortunate bucket of recent blackface on college campuses.

“Termination”

Hi everyone – I doubt this is the correct forum in which to post this, but I’m not sure where else to post. I apologize in advance for that. I read the blog a lot but haven’t posted here before. If there is a more appropriate place in which to post this, please tell me!

I’ll get to the point – I’m a college senior, and had an abortion days before I went back to school. The decision was fairly easy for me to make, but what shook me the most was realizing that I had all of this horrible unconscious stigma built up inside of me. As a feminist, it was really quite disturbing for me to constantly remind myself ...
