Words That Hurt Women With Infertility

Even though we’re only half of the equation, reproduction is seen as the domain of women.

In heterosexual relationships, women often bear the brunt of infertility. We are the first to suspect our bodies are defective. We blame ourselves for our illnesses, and sometimes, our partners do too. Even though men suffer from infertility in almost equal numbers, because the female body is seen as suspect, women see fertility doctors in much greater numbers than men, and usually are the first to be medically examined.

Our bodies become fodder for public discussions about reproduction, and even well-meaning friends and family can hurt us with their advice and questions. That’s why I made this infographic.

Did your representative vote to defund Planned Parenthood?

Abbie Waters blogs about women’s health, infertility, and reproductive health at FertilityNation.com.

As you probably know, last week the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives passed Mike Pence’s (R-IN) amendment to cut off federal funding for Planned Parenthood. Not abortions, mind you–federal funding for abortions are prohibited by the Hyde Amendment. No, they passed a law to cut off funding for basic, preventative health care: ob/gyn examinations, STI checks, cancer screenings, examinations for contraceptives, etc.

If you’re angry about this you should call your representative and let them know. If they voted for this vile bill, let them know. If they voted against it, call to thank them. If they didn’t vote, call them out on their cowardice. The Republican war ...

Philadelphia abortion clinic scandal spreads to Delaware and Louisiana

Abbie Waters blogs about reproductive health and fertility clinics at FertilityNation.com

Previously I’ve written about Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the “doctor” charged with seven first-degree murder charges related to the deaths of seven babies, and one third-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar, a woman from Nepal. His office was filthy and he employed high school dropouts to assist him with medical procedures. Yeah, nic

One of the most shocking revelations came from the grand jury probe, which revealed that “Pennsylvania health officials deliberately chose not to enforce laws to ensure that abortion clinics provide the same level of care as other medical service providers.”

Pennsylvania, under GOP governor Tom Ridge, decided that regulating women’s health clinics was not ...

Philadelphia Abortion Scandal News Updates and Reactions

Abbie Waters blogs about reproductive health at Fertility Nation.

I only recently became aware of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, a physician charged with seven first-degree murder charges related to the deaths of seven viable babies, and one third-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar, an immigrant woman from Nepal. I’ve been following the story and wanted to share what I’ve learned from updates and reactions to the story from across the blogosphere and MSM.

CNN:

Mongar died November 20, 2009, after overdosing on anesthetics prescribed by the doctor, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said. Williams called the facility “a house of horrors” that performed “botched and illegal abortions” and that was full of containers of fetuses’ body parts.

Ghalley ...

DIY at-home abortions? You’ve got to be kidding me!

Here are two stories which perfectly illustrate what happens when abortions are not legally and logistically available to women.

The first involves an improperly credentialed, allegedly murderous physician in Philadelphia, which I first read about here. Dr. Kermit Gosnell, a physician who operated a clinic that improperly performed late-term abortions on low income, minority and immigrant women. He was a family practice physician and not an OB/GYN, and his staff of eight lacked any medical training. Working in a state that banned late term abortion, he promised to help these women, and instead allegedly killed one woman, numerous babies, and endangered the lives of countless others. Thankfully he has been caught ...
