Support the Equal Rights Amendment

I am part of this group in Facebook called ERA NOW. They are an organization dedicated to the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Some people may think we don’t need the ERA, because societal progress has eradicated the need for it. Not true. From women still making 77 cents to every dollar a man earns, to a woman who just got fired for being “to attractive,” our rights that have been hard fought for in the second wave, are being attacked. Enough is enough.

Here is a petition to sign in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. It is our White House petition drive, and we need 25,000 signatures by February 10. Please sign and share this petition with all of your friends. Although the ERA failed to be ratified the first time around, let us make sure we finish what they started.

To our equality!

Current Feminism: Is it leaving out spiritual and religious women?

This is something I have thought about lately. It is pretty obvious that differing voices are sometimes looked over in the feminist movement. Maybe it is time we need to start welcoming those who have different cultural backgrounds, religious opinions, among other traits. We are currently in the “fourth wave,” and the fourth wave, unlike the second, seems to be a little more attuned to the reality of spirituality. In the second wave, religion was looked down on altogether. Now, it seems things are beginning to change a little more for the better.

In the first wave of feminism, religion played an integral role in the fight for justice and equality of women. Though the Churches did tend to oppose them, ...

The Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade

Since today is the 39th anniversary of a woman having a right to privacy and to her own body, I am not going to make this a long post. Today is the day to celebrate our reproductive rights, but it is also the day to continue to fight for what we got 39 years ago.

Though most of America agrees with Roe vs. Wade, there are some politicians who want to reverse this progress. We have to fight those politicians with our activism, and of course, our vote. I am a member of Feminist Majority, and one of their slogans seem to be “Vote as if your life depends on it.” Well, as women, it does. Republicans and Conservative Blue Dog ...

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today is a day we celebrate the great civil rights leader. He spoke against the discrimination of the African-American community. He spoke on behalf of workers’ rights, and he was against the capitalistic system we are currently in.  We can learn from Dr. Marin Luther King when it comes to our work with women’s rights.

Right now, we live in a culture where rape is not only okay, it is encouraged. From putting certain women on a purity pedestal to slut shaming, we have a lot of work to do. You are either “pure” or you’re a “slut.” There is no in-between. Women are judged morally by what we do with our bodies. I am pretty sure many of you realize ...

Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade

January 22nd will mark the 39th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the ruling that secured a woman’s right to a safe, legal abortion. Before Roe v Wade, abortions performed were back alley, illegal, and many women died from botched abortions. To me, that is a terrible reality to even ponder. I was born after this ruling, so I know my rights. But many of those rights are being attacked right now, from heartbeat bills in Ohio to personhood measures in other states. Our fight for our right to choose isn’t over.

When the religious right started gaining steam in the 1980’s, things started to go downhill for this country. Deregulation of Wall Street to tax breaks for the rich led to ...

Occupying the Vatican

As we all know, within the last few weeks, the Bishops have been harping on President Obama to make a broad exception to the HHS (Department of Health and Human Services) mandate to have insurance companies cover birth control 100%, without co-pay. The Bishops are on their misogynistic rage, and they have been for decades. The Catholic Church hasn’t always been this way though. In the Middle Ages, St. Antoninus, a Pope, allowed for abortions to save the life of the mother, which back then was a very large category. It was during the enlightenment period, (when people began to question authority and use their reason as authority), when the Bishops began to make this huge one brush stroke rule ...

United 4 Equality

United 4 Equality is an organization whose goal is to get the Equal Rights Amendment into the constitution by 2015. This past June, some of us may know about the Wal-Mart sex discrimination suit and how well that turned out. But Justice Scalia, however much I don’t like him, became a savior for the ERA. He told a reporter why he judged the way he did. “Surely the constitution does not require discrimination on the basis of sex, but the question is does it prohibit it? It doesn’t.”

Because Scalia said this comment, it acted as a wake-up call for women to demand full constitutional equality in this country. A few days after the Wal-Mart case, Representative (D) Carolyn ...

Paterno fired from Penn State

This past week, Joe Paterno received a good bye letter in the mail. As a college student myself, I am very proud of Penn State’s decision, but many other students weren’t. There were riots that seemed to have gone on forever hailing their ‘hero.’ Why? Because he’s the all-time winningest coach? This is beyond appalling. He raped many children while he was there, and he wasn’t held accountable (reminds me of the Catholic priest scandal still going on). Why is rape being lifted up as a normal part of life, as though women have less worth than a man of the same age.

Just recently, Facebook finally deleted all the ‘rape-joke’ pages, after numerous bouts of pressure from women about how ...
