Quick Hit: I used to like Urban Dictionary.
But there goes that. Can something just for once not be so predictable? Please, PLEASE.

Ho-lee shit. That's intense.
I used to be mildly amused by it until someone suggested I look up bucking bronco:

I'm with you, Samhita. That really ruined my afternoon.
And check out the links to other words like "misogyny" and "woman." When you're done with that mess, check out "homophobia." Ironic, huh?
That's like getting upset at YouTube comments, or like hypnotizing chickens. Help me out, Iggy Pop!
And always remember: if something gets more thumbs down than thumbs up, the definition is conclusively proven wrong, and vice versa. The same goes for group blog diary ratings and the Oscars.
Urban Dictionary's editing policy is here:
http://editor.urbandictionary.com/
They don't reject racist or sexist terms, only racist/sexist definitions.
I just signed up to be an editor- if we all submitted our own definitions of feminism from we all know to be true, we could outrank the horrid entries on this site.

The internet is full of misogynist assholes, and water is still wet.
I'm especially amused by the guy (and I'm sure it's a guy) who wants it to be called humanism. As if that term didn't have it's own definition(s), and encompass concepts that assholes like him would never, ever embrace.
i like the entry about how womenz have tiny ladybrains and how the female orgasm is far inferior to the male orgasm.
obviously, nothing new here, but i do like the idea of submitting accurate definitions so the misogynist asshole ones are outranked. it's pointless to waste much energy trying to reform the internet, but i think now and then a small, simple action can have a good result and make us feel a teeny bit satisfied. like when jessica outed that college republican douchefuck whose name escapes me.
Are you seriously surprised?
That site went downhill a while back. Just type in any term particularly relating to women, and it will be a total sexist/misogynist mess. For some reason that now escapes me, I typed in Latina a while back, and then another term (I forgot which one, but it dealt with women as well). After reading a few entries, I sensed that my IQ dropped by a handful of points.
Oh, wow. No wonder so many young women refuse to be typecast a feminist.
On a related note, has anyone else read Rebecca Walker's scathing critique of feminism? Rebecca, of course, is the daughter of famed writer and feminist Alice Walker. Rebecca blames both her mother and all feminists for "dooming" women to tragic childless existences - oh the horrors! Link here
Oh, another site that's been swarmed by MRAs. Yawn.
It's important for feminists to understand this about the online MRA community: This is no more than a bunch of MRAs ganging up on a website all at once and taking control. They gather at their own forums and plan these attacks. Then they all go to the website at once, and they do their best to take it by storm. They keep each other posted all the while at their own forums. Seriously, I've seen it happen, in real time, with my own eyes.
Wikipedia, Digg, and YouTube are also targets. They've effectively taken over Digg, they have a small but very active and vocal presence on YouTube, and they've succeeded in getting a few major edits and new pages put up on Wikipedia. However, Wikipedia has sane editors, which is the only thing preventing them from taking total control of the woman/feminism-related areas of the site. They are not many, but they are pissed off, they are dedicated, and most of all, they work together.
This is relatively new (as in, the last year-and-a-half or so) and is still gathering steam. Don't be surprised if you start to see a lot more of this crap happening over the next couple of years. Get ready for the shitstorm, guys...

Eek! Sorry for the double post.
Quote from the Urban Dictionary entry: "For example, a typical feminist will see no irony in arguing on one hand that women need more protection from domestic violence, rape and sexual harassment but on the other hand that women are just as good as men at construction and fighting crime, fires and wars."
What on earth does this have to do with the price of eggs in Cairo? We actually don't need protection, we need vast segments of the population to stop thinking rape and sexual harassment are okay. And requiring men to treat us the way they would want to be treated doesn't make us the weaker sex - it makes us human. And, therefore no less capable of physically grueling or dangerous work.
People just blow my mind.

I stopped reading after the 3rd definition because it made me so angry. Few things make me want to become violent, but people being so blatantly dumb does it every time.
I wasn't angry enough to miss their many grammar and punctuation mistakes though. ;)
Eek! How did they get so bitter? I thought we were supposed to be the bitter ones. . .
@ Human Bean: What do you expect? They're MRAs. Many of them have been charged with domestic abuse, or lost custody of their kids, or are being forced to pay child support/alimony, or their wives just up and left them and they don't know why, so it must be feminism's fault for brainwashing Western women. They're very unhappy with themselves, they've been frustrated time and again in trying to control the women in their lives, they feel emasculated. And they blame every conceivable problem in the world on feminism. It's all the wimmens' fault that they can't be John Wayne.
It'd be full-on pathetic if they weren't also filled with blinding, seething rage and the desire to destroy the independence, rights, and safety of women everywhere.

I like this one:
43. A word used, mainly by men, to categorise a woman who distinguishes herself as anything other than a sex slave or doormat.
(Obviously Inspired by the Rebecca West Quote)
There are a few decent definitions there, but buried back a few pages. I'm sure there are enough readers here to have a significant effect on the thumbs-up/thumbs-down count, if they're willing to wade through several pages of crap.
I'm really glad I don't personally know any guys who are even half loser enough to have written any of that horrible whiny bullshit on those first two pages. Them dudes, face it, have got no nuts, no nuts at all.
Aw, boo hoo, y'all poor pitiful losers! just can't manage to get hold of a woman who'll caress away your sad feelings of self-worthlessness, and this is someone else's fault. That's so tragic. And by "tragic," I mean "Ha ha ha, wussies, why don't you grow a pair?"
Sites like Urban Dictionary are crappy, because people can put up what they want, apparently without moderation. One should take heart from this: 576 up, 745 down.
People can put up what they like, but it does not mean that the public agrees, or that they are influencing others.
"We actually don't need protection, we need vast segments of the population to stop thinking rape and sexual harassment are okay."
I like that. That's a good way to put it.
"And requiring men to treat us the way they would want to be treated doesn't make us the weaker sex - it makes us human."
The Golden Rule bit: it was once suggested to me in a workshop (for which I paid $950 as a full time student), that "Do unto others as THEY want done unto THEM," (i.e., men should do unto women, as WOMEN want the men to do), would be a better idea. I submit that a lot of women would NOT like to be treated as men wish themselves to be treated, or men treat each other. Example: I wish my wife were sexually aggressive. She does not want that from me, as even a spontaneous hand on her behind can cause her flashbacks of being assaulted in public by strangers.

You do realize that you are generalizing, without any kind of citation, thousands of people?
You're in the same league of people who say that "feminists kill their children and are lesbians"

I have seen a lot of violent and hateful stuff written on that thing.
I think it's already gone beyond a handful of MRAs though.
In the anonymity of the web, we are seeing how a lot of men really feel, simple as that.
Plus, this type of content reflects contemporary trends in other mainstream "edgy" art/media/entertainment as well. So I'm not surprised really.
You're in the same league of people who say that "feminists kill their children and are lesbians"
Um... no. I'm not. A lot of MRAs -- most, I'd wager -- will freely volunteer that they feel emasculated by our current "misandrist" culture, and a lot of them -- again, I'd wager that it's most -- have experienced one or more of the things I mentioned as their "trigger moment" for becoming an MRA in the first place. A lot of them will freely admit to being unhappy with the state of their lives. The ones that are happy are often the ones who have opted for the "marriage strike" and dropped out of dealing with females entirely, or have married non-Western women in an attempt to get away from the "brainwashed" harpies from this side of the planet.
This info is all over the place, openly available on public forums and websites, if you'd care to take a look. My generalizations come from reading their own words.

I don't dispute that some of them are not MRAs, but most of them are -- I'd bet money on it. Especially the ones who took the time to write long, ranty posts about how men in our culture always get the shaft, and no one cares about that, and feminists are pissy, selfish hypocrites.
Not to mention that the whole point of swarming a website all at once, rather than staggering in whenever, is to give the appearance of greater numbers and wider support than actually exist.
Spike-
Yeah, that's what really bothers me. Not what they're saying (because I find it hard to be offended by idiots who can't spell or punctuate) but the frequency and the sheer volume of people who say such dribble. It's easy to marginalize a few wannabe hacker juveniles, it's not so easy to dismiss the enormity of violent and vulgar anonymous postingsin sites like UD and YouTube et al. Just look at Jessica's YouTube post a week or two back. yikes.
There is a perception that feminists are only concerned with women's place in society, with either a disregard for or antipathy towards the rights of men. I consider this wholly inaccurate, although I am often frustrated by lazy writers who fall back on rhetoric about women's superior peace-making skills or empathy, etc. This sort of language helps to fuel anti-feminism. Thankfully, Feministing for the most part avoids such pit falls.

Funny that an Urban Dictionary post was posted today, because I noticed something on there that made me uncomfortable as well. Try looking up the definition for hooker. On the second one, it reads: "2. Target practice."
Find it here: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hooker
I've sort of figured out what terms not to bother looking up. Occasionally, though, it comes in handy to look up random slang, it just can't be taken seriously.
As someone up there said, it's like getting upset over YouTube comments. I go in expecting assholes and am rarely let down. But it doesn't stop me from watching videos on YouTube and it won't stop me from looking up the occasional slang term if I need to. Unfortunately there aren't many other places that define most of these terms.
My "favorite" example sentence: "If she's got a vagina, she's better than you."
And?
KIDDING. Seriously, I like retrojayne's suggestion. Write your definition.
(Kind of like writing in your own presidential candidate. The thought came to me today, and I realized, the woman for me is NOT done yet.)
After reading this incredibly insulting "definition," I scrolled down to see an add that said "MEET SINGLE ARABS ONLINE" with a picture of a very skantily dressed middle-eastern woman.
Sexism and racism make a lovely pair, apparently.
"Many modern feminists argue that women are more intelligent than men, ignoring factual and scientific evidence. They ignore the fact that the female brain is considerably smaller than the male’s in both volume, weight, and brain cell content. They also “overlook” the fact that there have been no great female artists and few great female scientists."
Wow.. just.. wow.. so many problems with these sentences.
1. When did any of us ever claim that females are inherently more intelligent than males? I certainly didn't, I know the good and bad exist in both (and in the transgender, for that matter!)
2. As I learnt within 3 weeks of my first year psychology course at uni: the size and weight of the brain are not important, what IS important is the eficacy of the brain (i.e. the strength of connections to create fast and effective processing). If brain size, cell numbers etc contributed to intelligence, then elephants and whales would be ruling the world. Instead humans and dolphins have it down-pat.
3. I don't think any of us have ever "overlooked" that there aren't as many big female names as men throughout history, we just prefer to look at the cause (i.e. the strength and force of the patriarchy during those times) and how it suppressed the liberation and education of girls and women alike. I suppose the fact that there aren't many famous black scientists or artists means that they're naturally inferior too does it?
Graslgeonga sdfoknpiwnr, sometimes I just get all boiled up!
Oh for goodness sake. It's only funny when my ox isn't getting gored?
Come up with a funny, kick-ass definition yourselves. Some preliminary suggestions.
"Feminism: (noun) what men blame when their last excuse was too lame to convince even the three other lonely guys in this bar."
"Feminist: (noun) the latest in a long line of women who thought a man was too ugly, or too stupid, or too vain, or too clueless."
I sent in this one, because I was bored:
A movement or social philosophy that advocates legal, social, and economic equality for women. Contrary to the beliefs of some misguided individuals, it derives no particular pleasure from the genital-related misfortunes of men, being rather preoccupied with such frivolous goals as getting paid the same goddamned money for doing the same goddamned work, not being forced to have babies, and not having to put up with shit from the entertainment, advertising and fashion industries that have a vested interest in making sure women hate their bodies.
"Feminism is a benevolent force that aids in providing the best opportunities for all members of society, and anyone who believes otherwise is a paranoid, reactionary fuckwit."
Did y'all check out the definitions of MRA? Those first two do not look at all like the work of an organized group of angry jerks!
What the UD posters clearly have done is lump all feminists with certain PC ones who speak up for the rights of only those they agree with. Example:
"Question: How many feminists does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: That's not funny, you sexist pig. I will report your hate speech and ensure that your career and reputation is destroyed. We need a speech code to regulate people such as yourself. And you need to attend sensitivity training so that you can be re-educated on the benefits of feminism."

Yes, it's hard to believe the crazed dedication until you've witnessed it. There is nothing women do on the Internet that's comparable. I guest-blog on very small blog (with a Republican male economist!) and I've gotten a small taste of it. I'm shocked at the time and venom these losers will put into screaming down a post or even a comment they don't like. At first, I thought they must be very young and impulsive guys who don't know any better. But I've had more than one obsessive troll who was over 40.
Some may indeed be angry divorced custody-losers and DV perps. But the ones I'm familiar with seem rather to be spurred by 1) professional insignificance and 2) lingering anger over youthful sexual rejection. Often they are (or consistently claim to be) middle-aged and currently married with children. But the love of one non-supermodel is, alas, not sufficient balm for their bloated, wounded egos.
P.S.: In the interest of gender equality, I'll note that Paul G. Brown gets my vote for the best comment in the thread.
I wrote a new definition for antifeminist:
A person who denies that sexism exists and/or believes that women are inferior to men. These people claim that working towards gender equity is harmful to society.
Example:
Many students at Washington Univeristy protested the commencement speech of antifeminist author Phyllis Schlafly.
anti-feminist with a hyphen doesn't have a definition. Should I post the same one or do others have a better definition?
Also, can't we come up with a better term than "MRAs?" (Men's Rights Advocates, I assume?) It's deceptively nonobjectionable. Plus it buys into their claim of being persecuted people with threatened rights. How about "AMLs" (Angry Male Losers)?
The definition for antifeminist is especially interesting. Ugh.
Good lord ... I guess I should not be surprised that "alpha male" and "beta male" dwell there too: Beta male tends to be smart, quiet and unconfrontational. If lucky, beta males can get a hot chick once in her 30's, after she's tired of fucking the Alpha Males, and decides to settle down with a beta male for money and stability. This is how the typical Internet troll views himself: smart, quiet, and unfairly overlooked by you evil picky feminists.
If we were to draw one Venn diagram of MRA/AML Internet trolls, and another of the men who proselytize about "alpha" and "beta" males, I suspect one would be inside the other.
Trying again for antifeminist definition:
1. A person who believes that since women can vote and this is a democracy then sexism no longer exists.
2. A person who believes that men are supposed to kill animals and women are supposed to make babies
Example:
I posted a story about rape on my blog and it was promptly overrun by antifeminist trolls.
at some point (about 2 years ago) I had waged a one-person war on them by becoming an editor and submitting positive definitions for female body parts. (I find a certain 4-letter word very strong and positive and I like my other body parts as well, so I don't see why they should have a negative meaning while testicles have a positive one).
But I lost. My entries were not accepted and I realized everyone there was either a dude or not willing to accept anything outside the mainstream.
there are many other crappy definitions in there. i'm down to help take action if it is organized :)
They also “overlook” the fact that there have been no great female artists and few great female scientists."
This went off on Nobel prize winners to me once.
I responded with, "Rosalind FUCKING Franklin."
You ladies are so kind and earnest.
Antifeminist:
1. Male who knows he'll never get laid anyway, so why pretend?
Or,
2. Woman trying to scam something (probably not sex) from that male.
Or,
3. Guy who totally deserves to rule the world and have a harem of hot young porn stars and must be getting thwarted by feminists because how else could he fail?
Or,
4. Guy who used to have a blog about cats or Eureka but couldn't attract any readers.
"Also, can't we come up with a better term than 'MRAs?' (Men's Rights Advocates, I assume?) It's deceptively nonobjectionable. Plus it buys into their claim of being persecuted people with threatened rights. How about 'AMLs' (Angry Male Losers)?"
I consider MRA figures like Glenn Sacks to be different from most of the men who post on his blog who can be considered pigs for all I care. Sacks will even alienate his readers by agreeing with feminists on certain issues or actually having feminist bloggers on his site regularly as guest contributors. I do not believe I will see Sacks allowed onto feminist blogs to present the "men's" side soon. He has also banned the term nazi from his site, as it applies to characterizing those one does not agree with, e.g., the term feminazi. To my knowledge, he does not accept use of vulgarity on his site. He also appears to have a happy home life.
I doubt personal bitterness is what motivates him. He just really believes issues such as legal treatment of men in divorce proceedings deserve rethinking, e.g., what's wrong with joint custody or shared parenting, if a man is not abusive and lives within a reasonable distance? Why should honestly poor men (not those who avoid work to dodge obligations like OJ) be threatened with jail as "deadbeat dads," when being in jail will help no one? And I am very disappointed when he does come out with unfair views or those dismissive of feminist concerns. He could certainly moderate comments better.
Why aren't we organising ourselves to add our own (correct) definitions to Urban Dictionary, or at least push the correct ones to the top?
Why don't we comment on hateful YouTube videos or on rape-apologist blog posts? There are a lot of us...if we could just organise to take on one thing at a time...
I'm talking about making ourselves trolls - just being honest feminists who tell the honest truth about feminism. We can't always stick to our safe corners of the web.
Anything...anything to chip away at this hateful mountain.
Sorry - I missed a word out in my above post. It should read:
I'm NOT talking about making ourselves trolls
Whoa. Those definitions smack of insecurity.
Violetfishy, I agree. I often wonder why this site doesn't ask us to crash polls or similar endeavors. Not only is it hilarious when it's something as insignificant as an internet poll, but it makes a loud statement when the "minority" becomes a rowdy majority online.
What you have to understand about urbandictionary is that any asshole can submit a word/definition. Once you submit a word, it goes around to UD editors (people all over the net who sign up to do it) for a few weeks. Once it gets enough positive votes, it gets posted. UD is just like wikipedia in that they provide the forum for rampant stupidity but get to claim no-responsibility when someone complains. I don't know why anyone's surprised that a site as popular as this is overrun with such crap. On YouTube all a woman has to do is post a video, no matter what the content, and immediately she starts getting posts about how hot/not hot she is and how someone should shut her up by sticking a dick in her mouth. That's the internet. Until sites like UD and YT wake up and decide to do something about the problem themselves, these trolls have a very convenient forum for their beliefs. I don't know what these guys did for fun before the internet was invented.
Anyone notice these were all written by male users? How sad that this is how feminism is viewed.... But you can't really be angry with them - we just have to work harder to change that view via our actions on a daily basis.
I think it is resentment at their perceived loss of privilege. In their minds it is a zero sum game, i.e. if women gain power, they lose; and they are angry.
Of course they are wrong, to the extent that over 50% of the people in our society are disenfranchised, we are all diminished, and to the extent that same demographic is empowered we are all benefited.

tigerlilywobo, I got the same ad too.
I still prefer my own initial reaction to the acronym MRA: Male Rape Apologist.
MRAs are targetting Youtube? That explains the comments I've seen there lately calling Battlestar Galactica emasculating. (Or 'immasculating'.) It just seemed so random, but it makes sense now. (Hey, guys, stop invading my geek bubble!)

Exactly! I'm so glad that someone else who comments here has experienced what these guys are capable of. And you're totally right, it is hard to believe until you've seen the dedication for yourself. They literally will not stop; threads can go on for weeks, or even months; the support for their crazy viewpoints seems to just keep pouring in, like a flood of bile; and it's all the work of maybe as few as 10 or 20 people. But it always looks like more, because they'll even go so far as to post under several different names at once, come back as different people after they've been banned, etc.
It's truly astounding to witness, especially if you can find the forum where the attack is being organized. They repost their comments, including responses they've received, post pictures of website admins and mock them with incredibly nasty names ("mangina," "femcunt," etc.), and just generally whip each other into a veritable frenzy of anger and vitriol. And they will not rest until they can declare some sort of victory over their self-declared opponents.

Hmm. I think there's actually quite a bit of overlap between the two groups. I'd agree that the "youthful sexual rejection" angle is what fuels a good number of them, including the ones who've experienced other forms of "anti-male discrimination." However, a lot of them truly feel that society has screwed them in a very particular way, often through the family court system.

Haha, yeah, that's them. It helps to know who you're really dealing with, doesn't it? I find that it makes me feel better to know that it's not really that the majority of men secretly feel this way, but that a small and crazily dedicated group of men are very willing to share that they feel this way, in as many forums as possible.
@literarycritic /[italics] Hmm. I think there's actually quite a bit of overlap between the two groups. Ha. It's nice to know that other people have picked up on these bullshit excuses as well.
It's funny how these losers seem to ignore all of the woman hating that's been recorded since people started putting a pen to paper.
Hmmm. Thousands of years before crappy divorces and the rejections of modern courtship---what was the excuse back then I wonder?
I hadn't heard about Battlestar Galactica being "emasculating" but I'm not surprised. Antifeminists have been bitching since the early 80s about how feminists have pressured the networks so that there are no strong male role models any more.
As for Urban Dictionary, what's the point in having "feminism" in a slang dictionary? OK, in this case the point is to slam feminists, but generally?
Isn't this a little bit like saying Wikipedia sucks because there's tons of idiotic fancruft?
I went over there and left nasty comments in their definitions about how they were just too lazy to actually do anything to improve their lives and instead prefer to blame people they have more privileges than to make themselves feel better. I also signed it with something to the effect of "your mother who still has only half the rights and none of the privilege that you do"
i cant stand internet bullies, especially not antifeminist cowards.
Perhaps we should invest more time in finding out why a man might be so strongly opposed to feminism.
There are no legitimate reasons for why anyone would be opposed to feminism, stated on that site, or anywhere else, for that matter.
However, I think the *illegitimate*, delusional "reasons" why a male would be against feminism, or pro-sexism, are pretty well known by now.
i do see one positive thing amongst all these idiotic definitions
there are a whole lot more thumb downs compared to the thumbs up
obviously i would rather there be only positive definitions of feminism
but the many thumb downs makes me happy to see that many people do realize that those who created these definitions are full of shit
same with youtube comments
i become so empowered when i see a bigoted comment get over a thousand thumb downs and only a hundred thumb ups
