Monday Monty Blogging (smart doggie edition)

Photobucket

Monty is very serious indeed.

So I'm on my way to London (woo hoo!) for a couple of days - apologies ahead of time if posting is a bit slow. You'll be in good hands with the rest of the Feministing crew until I haul my ass back to New York. In the meantime, consider this an open pet thread. Talk your dogs/cats/fish, etc up in comments. See who has the cutest one.

Monty is such a handsome little fella. :)
As many of you know, it's been terribly hot & humid here in the mid-Atlantic. I live in an attic apartment of an OLD, OLD house, and the past couple days have been unbearable. I have some fans and a window air conditioning unit, but it's ancient and barely keeps my tiny place cool. Poor Hoagie (9 year old beagle) is just dying. He spends a lot of time moving from the floor to the bed to the couch to the floor again, trying to get comfy.
He's been hiding in the back of my walk-in closet, so when I return home he saunters out, all groggy with his tongue hanging out. I'm paranoid that my power will go out, or a fuse will blow, while I'm at work and I'll return home to find him dead. Eek! I hate this heat.

lol, he r serious dog!

My 1-1/2 year old orange tabby cat Maury is very playful. His favorite game is stealing the straws from my iced coffee! He just loves playing with them. I find them all over the house. Here's a picture: Drinks, anyone?

I feel bad for my pup too. His name is Oscar and he's a 2-yr-old pug, and pugs don't take to heat very well. It's been 95 degrees out the last few days and so I haven't been taking him for walks or playing with him, because I don't want him to get overheated. So he's been moping around the house a lot, looking depressed. He's been climbing up on the couch and literally hugging the pillows.

I have the cutest one. No contest. Sorry, Monty.

Here's a whole album of pictures of Zelda:

She wins :)

Monty is such a lil cutie! And SarahMC, boy do I hear you on the heat and humidity, I thought we were all going to throttle each other, but we're also in the basement so you have my sympathy up there in the attic!

The link to my fave 'serious' pic is below. Her name is Brandi, she's about 27 or so.

I have three boxer girls Bridgid, Pacha and Milagros, who give the most amazing reception when we get home. – I always joke that my husband is in a gender minority, but he survives !
Boxers are so playful and affectionate, it’s hard not to feel loved when they are so happy to see us when we get home. We could learn a lot from puppies.

I have 2 mutts. Shelby Woo (chow chow-german shephard mix) and Chance (aka Mr. Chancey Pants) whose heinz 57 variety.

Chance is terrified of storms and so he had a terrible Friday night here in central Indiana. We had lots of thunder which, to him, is the harbinger of death. He stayed in one corner of his kennel and panted his way through. He wouldn't even eat until it was all over (about 10-12 hours total). But, he didn't poop himself, which isn't uncommon during severe storms, which is good.

Shelby is a pampered pooch and doesn't like walk on the lawn after it rains. She just stands on the porch steps lifting her feet like it's the most disgusting thing ever. She hadn't gone for several hours when, finally, she ran out the back door and peed on the sidewalk.

We got about 8-9 inches of rain in 5 hours. People have been flooded out of their homes, roads and bridges have collapsed - very odd for this area. The creek that runs under our road, normally inches deep, is now several feet deep and rushing. Luckily, it only tends to cover the road while it's raining and recedes pretty quickly when it stops.

More rain and thunder in the forcast for tonight, too. Good times.

SarahMC and anyone else with hot dogs ; )-

If you have the extra bucks, there is a climate controlled travel carrier – the floor cools or heats as needed – but it’s only big enough for dogs (or cats) up to 15 lbs. There are those neat bowls out now that continually filter the water (you have to fill the reservoir), but, again, they cost. Also, just for a fun summertime or birthday treat, I sometimes get Frosty Paws, which is doggie "ice cream," at the grocery store. My puppies love it - but, then, they are dogs and and it is food.

I used to give Shelby ice cubes during the summer. I’d either put them in her water dish or just give her one to chew on (on the tile floor, of course) and that seemed to help some…it’s also great for teething puppies.

But, really, plenty of fresh, cool water and minimal exercise/excitement are about the only things you can do if you don’t have air-conditioning. And lots of love, of course.

Everyone's animals are absolutely adorable. I agree that it's a rough time to be a furred creature in the Northern hemisphere. My Persian, Ira, is definitely appreciating the lion cut he got.

Anyway, here's big I's webpage: http://www.catster.com/pet_page.php?i=348420

me? pass up a chance to talk about my puppy? haha, never!

In fact I made a special Shutterfly account just so i can share pics of him with ya'll :) haha

Sorry ladies, but I think my pet takes the cake. His name is The Flash (named by my sister's bf after the superhero) and even though he's grown up since this picture, I've always thought he was the cutest kitten I've ever seen. The first picture is of Flash commandeering my keyboard for a power nap when he was a kitten and the second is of him all growed up (he's mildly in love with our dog, Layla).

Last week I found a dead squirrel in my backroom/mudroom....courtesy of my 8 year old Jack Russel.

It took him 8 years but he finally did it. I assume he was so proud he placed it in the middle of the floor so I could congratulate him. It didn't really go over as well as he expected I am sure.

I have the cutest!! Kitten in a bucket:

Annora.

She was sleepy so it was easy enough to get her to stay in there. I took her out as soon as i was done taking pictures.

I vote my cat for the most, uh..."special". She's been known to walk into walls she was looking at, and I think I have yet to see her NOT land on her face when she falls off anything. Also, she's addicted to string cheese (I always have to share) and has a foot fetish. Hubby and I wear socks at night, even as hot and humid as it is, just to protect our feet from her midnight stealth attacks.

So there, beat that if you can!

How can I not join in on this one? Like any mom, I think my pup is the cutest out there:

Thea is our greater swiss mountain dog, and she's the best! Greets us with kisses and cuddles as soon as we walk in the door.

As for keeping your dogs cool, there are a few things we've discovered:

You can get a thermoregulating crate pad. Basically, it's a vinyl covered crate pad that you can fill with water and it stays cool so your dog always has a cool place to lie.

Also, we just invested in a ruffwear cooling vest (big black dog living in Atlanta needs a little relief). You wet the vest and put it on and it keeps the dog cool.

Yes, our dog is spoiled. I never claimed otherwise...

I'm getting a kitten sometime this week! I'm so excited!

Oh I just love everybody's pets! This was an awesome idea (thanks Jessica).

What good timing - we just got two golden retriever pups 2 days ago. Their names are Sadie and Jackson, and they are two little balls of fluff. Adorable. They are currently passed out underneath the kitchen table, after a long day of running around in the 95 degree weather.

My step-cat (belongs to long-term boyfriend that I do not live with) was involved in some sort of accident last week. She came home with a tooth falling out and my man had to rush her to an emergency vet. $500 later, she had her jaw rewired, leaving her mouth slightly agape, and a little bit of drool comes out while she sleeps. It's absolutely adorable.
Now, twice a day she has to be wrestled down to receive her meds. I wonder what goes on in pets' minds when they receive medical care? They must hate us!I just wish we could tell her that we're force feeding her medicine for her own good!

I love looking at people's pet pictures. Squeeee!

Here's my baby boy

and with his best bud (my boyf's roomie's doggie)

PSA time: Humane Societies across the country are dealing with a serious cat baby boom. If you're thinking of adopting a kitten, please consider adopting from the Humane Society (or any shelter)!

ummm my cat marla is the cutest cat ever. here she is in her halloween cape:

get ready for the cutest kitty EVER
and another
one more for good measure (she was holding the camera)

banhorn, my family has a Jack Russel terrier too. Jack the Nipper. He used to catch moles at my old house, then leave them neatly lined up on the porch stairs. He also caught a bird once, 30 minutes before I had to go to work, and I had to spend a loooong time chasing him to get it.
I'm currently living in a pet-free apartment, but I think that these cats are very adorkable; http://www.petoffice.co.jp/catprin/english/

I love this! Just this morning, my dog and I were accosted by a bunch of blond-haired children, jumping and pointing and ending every sentence with 'wiener-dog.' So here's my little guy with his best chihuahua buddy.

I Love ALL the pet pics!

Here's a few of my one and only love

I just posted a bunch of pics of my roommate's cats since she moved to WA for a summer internship and I'm watching her cats until she comes back--I thought it might help her not to miss them too much.
They are the sweetest little cats...

These pets are all so cute!

Wow I didn't realize that Jessica lived in NY. It's such an expensive place to be, and I envy her trip to London too.

Wow, am I the only one with lots of non-dog and cat type pets? I'm officially a pet freak! (sobs)
