Misogyny in the media

Admittedly, I could have done without the classical music / quote interludes, but seeing this compilation (put together by the Women's Media Center) certainly does tickle one's gag reflex.

Certainly does tickle my gag reflex...

I cannot believe that some of the misogynistic comments were made by women of the media. Well, then again, if they're reading off a script, maybe I can see b/c some stupid male wrote it. Unfortunately, men will just never see past their patriarchal viewpoints and their penis.

It's funny. As feminists we all know this is happening. But to see it all together like that is truly disturbing. Fox news is a deplorable channel. MSNBC isn't far behind. We should boycott.

Boycotting is right. I am a much happier person now that we've essentially gotten rid of cable TV.

You can get a lot of news free via podcasts from NPR, BBC, etc. etc. There are tons of options.

Wow, Chris Matthews is an idiot. Who gives a f*** about the "cosmetics" regarding Hillary Clinton? That matters even less than whether or not Obama wears a flag pin. It is not only sexist, but extremely condescending to viewers for these anchors to consistently focus on insignificant drivel instead of policy positions and candidate vision. It's like they WANT us to be uninformed.

You know, I can understand you're frustrated, but making moronic and sexist statements is counterproductive and annoying. Next time count to 10 before you post.

What makes this sadder is that this is COMMONPLACE, and many people wouldn't see anything wrong with these comments.

Some of it was cut off, but around the 3 min mark, a woman looked like she was going to say something back to one of the sexist male commentators.

Also-
I can't take Tucker Carlson seriously. Ever.

i think folks are looking too deeply into this. when obama is said to be handsome and has a deep voice, are they being sexist. why is ti when a woman is said to be attractive its sexism, but when the crew of the view say obama is very sexy, its all fun and games

The View doesn't pretend to be some serious, hard-hitting, unbiased news source. It's a few ladies sitting around chatting about whatever strikes their fancy.
Plus, when men are described as "sexy" it does not detract from their leadership abilities, intelligence, expertise, etc. Women's looks are focused on in order to belittle and discredit them.
Context matters.

owo9ja, are you serious? If you watched that video and can't see what feminists are upset about, I don't think I can explain it to you. I'll just be over here in the corner, crying softly to myself.

The biggest problem I had was that it mostly seemed to come from Fox and a couple other networks sometimes. It's not just the talking heads who've created this climate of sexism. They also only seemed to talk about Clinton or Pelosi, and they're not the only ones who are treated like this.

I think it could have been more comprehensive in that regard, and therefore made it look more like a problem with the media, and less like a problem with Fox and Clinton. It's too easily dismissed as it is.

Bleah. A lot of it was from Fox, though, and they're not exactly known for comprehending that we're in the 21st century. Still, the number of comments from Chris Matthews was distressing.

I admire Hillary for having the guts to walk into this morass knowing that she was going to have to deal with all this foolishness. Twenty years from now we're going to look back on this campaign the same way we look at sexist ads from the 60s and 70s. "Were we really that sexist back then?"

I think you could post a video of a guy saying "I AM A SEXIST, AND I THINK WOMEN ARE INFERIOR, BECAUSE I'M TOTALLY SEXIST" and there'd still be someone to reply "why are you saying he's sexist?? you're looking too deeply into this."

Tucker Carlson is worse than I thought..

This is where I see men are still needing women and that these cowards are little boys. Men would not know what to do without us but they continue to bash us because they are clearly bored.

Ugh. I had to stop watching after Tucker Carlson.

I am boycotting Chris Matthew's show, too, that's for sure!

Disgusting.

Chris Mathews has a VERY small penis. At least Howard Stern is doing it to get laughs from his inbred fans. Matthews is just a wanker.

I couldn't even watch all of that. Urgh.

So women shouldn't be in the Oval Office because of their rampant mood swings and PMS?

*pukes on sexist men*

badnfluence, (name is appropriate)

How is her comment sexist? The fact that men haven't shown that they can see beyond their patriarchal viewpoint is the precedent that has been set, and so the comment is, therefore, true. I'd suggest taking your own advice, and understanding that you're on a WOMEN'S forum, and if a woman wants to post that, she can. How do you know she's wrong? If we haven't been able to eliminate sexism ultimately in the world, then how can you be so sure that her comment is wrong? Take a breath before YOU feel so full of yourself that you think you can chastise someone on this forum without having a legit point to make. It's not tolerable.

Wow some of this is really bad. These guys are obviously threatened and they're trying everything they can to tear them down.

I will say that I don't like it when people take little clips of things and string them together. I have this nagging voice in the back of my head screaming that without context, you can twist and misrepresent anything. It's like a little propaganda alarm goes off. Some of those clips were just so short that... well then again some were more than long enough to know these guys are sexist.

Women are too fragile. It has been proven in many scientific studies that women are inferior to men. This is why women are deservingly payed less for doing the same work as a man. The only valuable skills a woman can ever hope to learn are cooking and cleaning. Men are too busy with important business dealings to worry about cooking and cleaning for themselves.History is littered with evidence of this. For instance, Joan of Arc led an army on the battlefield, only to be subsequently raped, tortured, and killed. In the Bible (the word of God), Eve was tricked into eating the forbidden fruit because she was weak-minded. Many men said that a woman could never fly around the world alone. Amelia Earhart proved they were right. At least the countries in the Middle East have their priorities straight. Their women are not allowed to go to school, hold jobs, and in some cases they are not even allowed outside without a male escort. That's how it should be here. Women should be treated as property of men. In the future, I think there will no longer be printed or coined currency. Instead, we will walk the streets with a couple women around our arms and trade them for various goods and services. In conclusion, go the kitchen and make me a sandwich.

wow, i never knew the news media was so obnoxious. how the hell can anyone say she'll do a bad job just because she's a woman?! "nagging", "cleavage", "blah blah blah"
shut the hell up already! you have nothing good to say. it's just ignorance coming out of your ass...

One of the worst things about this is that it ISN'T "hard-hitting media" doing this. It's so accepted that we get women on the likes of "The View," who are frankly doing more harm than morons like Carlson and Matthews by assimilating sexism themselves, so thousands of people who don't think about these things anyway will be able to say "Well, women do it all the time, too."

OMG this made me so mad! Ugh! I watch all these news program and I am so disappointed in Chris Matthews. I've always found him to be kinda sexist but this just exposes how sexist he is. He has apologized for sexist comments about Hillary in the past. Regardless all of these men make me sick to my stomach. If this was about Obama being a black man this would never have aired!!Unbelieveable that people don't see this!
