Vagina Dentata Open Thread
Has anyone ever seen the movie Teeth? I know we've blogged about it before, but I finally watched it yesterday and I fucking loved it. Loved.
Anyone else see it? Thoughts?

I've been dying for this movie to come out. It debuted at Sundance or something a few years ago, and I couldn't wait. I wonder what took so long?
Overall I thought it was really fun and campy, definitely not your ideal date movie...I took my boyfriend to see it with me and let's just say it was an awkward ride home!! haha
There are some parts that made me feel uncomfortable, mostly how after the night with the second kid where she was drugged and coerced into sex, she wakes up fully happy about the experience (for a few minutes anyway..until she finds out it was a bet and severs his penis).
Other than that, awesome. I think everyone should see it!
P.S. the scene in the sex ed classroom...priceless!
I haven't seen the movie, but thought it was interesting that the anti-rape condom is also inspired by the concept of a toothed vagina.

This movie was SO good. I'm planning on posting a spoiler-ridden review at some point.
I wanna see it!
When it first came out, I got a bunch of e-mails from friends asking how I, as an empowered feminist, thought of it. yeah, cause i speak for all feminists...*eyeroll*
omg! Jessica, if you are reading this you have to tell me how you saw this movie. I have been obsessed with Jess Weixler (the lead role) ever since I saw her debut in "the big bad swim".
if you could tell me how you saw it or where you got it I would really appreciate it.
I absolutely loved it. The only thing that caught me off guard was the ticket taker who was actually hassling people entering the film saying "You're not REALLY going to see that ARE YOU?"
Vagina dentata, what a wonderful phrase
Vagina dentata, ain't no passing craze

Anyone know how I can get / see the movie in Australia?
My best friend and I thought this movie was *hilarious*... No one in the audience was laughing as hard as we were, though, and my boyfriend was slightly disturbed by the concept. Jess Weixler gives a good performance that really anchors the movie-- without her talent, it could've easily devolved into something really dumb and cheesy.
Thank you, I am adding it to my Netflix queue now!
Fantastic, this easily takes the title of worst date movie ever.
I hope there's a sequel, or several, I haven't been this spooked by a concept since Freddy Krueger made me afraid to go to sleep as a child.
Wait, you mean that movie's actually good? The trailers didn't do it justice as far as I can tell, then, as I thought it would be just awful, not even funny awful.
Now I'll have to get ahold of a copy, make some popcorn, and settle in to watch it with my wife as our traditional horrible date movie (we like to go on dates to terrible date movies, a tradition that dates back to our seeing 'Hannibal' on a date once).
Matthew-
It's definitely funny awful, you and your wife won't be disappointed.
too bad they didn't get Jeremy Irons to play the gyn.
The ads they're using to sell the DVD are WAY off base as to what you actually get in the movie.
I loved it! Saw it in the theatre with a friend, who leaned over and said, "THIS is the greatest movie EVER!!!"
My friend Jeremy downloaded it all on his own after hearing me talk about it months ago. We (him, his boyfriend, and me) were expecting a serious thriller. We were super pleased with how campy and ridiculously hilarious it was. The two of them weren’t squirmy at all, and in fact rewound the gruesome parts so as to not miss any details. I personally loved the social commentary on abstinence only education. I smell a cult classic.
while i did like the film, and would probably watch it again, i do have a critique.
i feel like the film's attempt to combine elements of both comedy and horror create an ambiguous effect in the audience's response, most unfortunately during the scenes in which the main character is being assaulted or raped. while the audience knows that the perpetrator's penis is about to be bitten off, it creates an uncomfortable humor knowing that the assault is devastating and scary for the main character (before she starts using her vagina dentata as a conscious weapon, of course).
I saw it and loved it. I was afraid it was going to be a male-bashing fest, but it wasn't. It's graphic in a cartoonish way, but very funny. Several severed dicks are shown, and the funniest is when a big bad dog munches on a creep's penis -- right in front of its horrified owner (and he really deserved it). The young men in the theater where I saw it laughed/howled more than the women. The dudes who got chomped were from the undesirable end of our gender who treated the young woman (who, by the way, does gets naked) like shit. So it's not as if the woman was going around biting the dicks off of innocent dudes to pay for the sins of the patriarchy committed against women throughout eternity. To the women: unless you're dating a Neanderthal (and why would you be doing that?), this one's b/f safe, I think.
I guess I'll give this a look sometime. I was under the impression it was a serious horror flick, meant to be scary. So glad to hear it's acutally funny instead.
My wife and I saw it in Baltimore, and I loved it, more than she did, I think. Outstanding casting. Where did they find these people?
Good news, wannabe Teeth fans: The DVD comes out next Tuesday, 5/6. We will probably rent it ourselves and invite our friends over. No one with modern sensibilities should be offended, althought I concede it was rated R for a reason.

No one with modern sensibilities should be offended, althought I concede it was rated R for a reason. Since Melissa Brooks waxed poetic, I will too. (Yes, I do know "smitage" is not a real word, but its meaning is obvious.)
It's a tale of high smitage , a tale,
And beside it all others would pale,
For she has in her ken
To make eunuchs of men
Who against her will plunder her Grail.
I want to see it! I've had vagina dentata on the brain ever since I watched Alien last night.
I thought this movie was amazing! At first I was pretty creeped out by the abstinence group (well, at least it's an appropriate feeling to start a horror/comedy movie off with I suppose), and then I was seriously annoyed by the sex ed class, though some of the students responses were fantastic.
As for the dentata... I WAS ROLLING by the end of the movie! I felt horrible for her at first when she found out, and of course the rape/assault is not pleasant. But, once she figures out it's the perfect weapon against the assholes who treat her like shit.. it's amazing! I couldn't NOT laugh.
These reviews sound good enough to make me forgive the filmmakers for "every rose has it's thorns."
I fucking loved it too!
I saw it a few months ago and was sad about how few positive reviews it got. I'm glad there are others who loved it as much as I did.
This movie looks terrible. Or is this one of those situations where repackaging a shitty teen horror movie into feminist clothing suddenly makes it a good strip of celluloid? Theme does not a good film make - good filmmaking does.
Re: not a date movie--the great thing about this film is that it succeeds as a super gross-out fest at the expense of the male characters instead of the female ones (although the leading lady is of course horrified herself, in a different way). I think any fans of bloody, graphic horror movies--men, women, or neither--would love it for that. It bends the traditional gender roles in horror films in interesting ways; the protagonist is still a woman, but she is simultaneously a victim and the assailant, while never being the victim of gruesome attacks.
My main problem with the movie was how super-caricatured the step-brother was. I know it was all exaggerated, and a lot of caricaturing was going on, but I thought they went too far with him for no good reason (way, way past unlikable).
"Or is this one of those situations where repackaging a shitty teen horror movie into feminist clothing suddenly makes it a good strip of celluloid?"
The trailer makes it look awful, like she's some kind of seductress praying on innocent men and fathers, lock up your sons but oh man... It was so campy and hilarious. The entire theater was cracking up. Great satire on abstinence only educatuon and parody of horror movies as a whole.
I loved this movie. It was hilarious (although I agree I wouldn't want to bring a guy date to it). The performances were great, and I really really liked the way it showed a woman's vagina as a strong, active thing. The way her sexuality HAD to be respected or...CHOMP!
The only thing that was problematic for me was the detailed depiction of rape. I went with a friend who was a survivor, and the scenes of rape (particularly the first one in the grotto) were a trigger for her. I think it's important to deal with rape in all media, including film. It's also important, though, to be careful about visually depicting it. I think the film succeeded in making it completely unsexy (esp with the gross-out penis biting), but I'd be careful watching it if you know visuals of rape are going to be a trigger for you.
Otherwise, kudos to everyone involved. Great film!

"There are some parts that made me feel uncomfortable, mostly how after the night with the second kid where she was drugged and coerced into sex, she wakes up fully happy about the experience"
My boyfriend and I thought the exact same thing after that scene. We just looked at each other like "uhh, didn't she just get raped? How come there was no chomping!?"
Other than that, it was very campy, not too long, and very funny.
Oh yeah, and the dog part was hilarious!
I saw this with a friend when it was playing in L.A. and the audience we were with (almost equal male/female ratio) and I thought it was hilarious and for the most part I enjoyed it. The qualm I had was that I did actually think there were no redeeming male characters, (except for her father who we didn't see that much) pretty much every male she came into contact with was a total over the top asshole and it seemed to be so it was okay for her to do what she did. I prefer my plots and characters a bit more complicated than that (a la Battlestar Galactica) but I can understand why it needed to be so cartoonish. I also had issue with the fact that in order to even use her power she has to allow men to enter her every time, the way the film was left there's really no other way for her to defend herself. I don't know about anyone else but for me it would suck to have to let every rapist penetrate me in order for me to fight back. Nonetheless, it's still a great premise. But overall, I enjoyed it.
I thought it was a really good film. But I didn't think it was funny.
I was actually really upset and disturbed by the cinema full of people laughing about a young woman being raped, sexually assaulted and raped again.
It was a film about a confused young woman who was abused on numerous occassions - the addition of a toothed vagina doesn't make it funny.
I FUCKING LOVED IT!!! I rented it today with my boyfriend and some of our friends and we were laughing our ass off. It was fucking awesome. My boyfriend pointed out the billboard in the background of one of the scenes where it said "perfect" over the model. I love that they did that. I love the look in her eye at the end of the movie like HAHA I HAVE THE POWER NOWW FUCKAHHHSSSS!!!!
So what's the film about? I girl who gets raped and has teeth in her vagina?
Deary me.
I really didn't like it all that much. The camp didn't go far enough to be funny for me.
Most of it just wasn't that funny I thought. I could see why it was supposed to be funny and I felt like if I didn't at least chuckle I was being a "bad feminist" but most of it I didn't think was all that clever.
Example:
The dog eating the penis was *not* funny. It was obvious, stupid and a joke any 5 year old could make, you know from the second you first see the dog at the start of the movie it's only there to eat his dick. It's only a matter of time.
Although my boyfriend laughed at it, maybe I just expect too much. The brother character had *so* much potential to be hilarious and it was just wasted I felt. So did the other promise ring kids. And they almost were. This whole movie was a giant "almost" for me.
I was really looking forward to it and was really let down. I wanted to like it, and I sort of did, but it wasn't all that great.
It's no "Shawn of the Dead" or even "Dead and Breakfast" and it's no "I Spit on Your Grave" it just wallows in the no-man's land in-between, and sure it's the only thing out there that's like it, but that doesn't make it a great movie.
Why am I suddenly visited by a vision of Timon and Puumbaa, draped arm over shoulder, and belting happily away in best Broadway style..."It's our problem-freeeee, phil-o-so-pheeee, Vagina Dentataaa!"
