We are raising the money in order to help launch the Antigone Foundation, a national foundation that will encourage young women aged 10-30 to get politically and civically engaged. This is an awesome project and a great way to get young women thinking about feminism and what we could all be doing to make women's lives better. It is a great project to do with my nieces, but the postcards get rather buried on the Antigone site. It would be nice if they made a separate page or site for the cards, so that they were all up on display all the time.

Okay I'll say it - it would be nice if they could use a song by a female singer/songwriter. I know there are plenty of them in BC, shouldn't be hard to find one that has an uplifting, pro-woman message.

Just wanted to post to say thank you to Courtney for publicizing our project! You're right Whitemore, there are many female singer/songwriters in BC and we will make it a point to include one in our next video! I think the wonderful Kelly Lau who put together the video simply as an example of our project just really liked that song.

La pobre... we will definitely consider making them more accessible on our webpage.

Anyways, we hope you will all submit some postcards. Its a great project to do with young girls or women in order to get them thinking about women's issues.

Take care,

What a wonderful project, I'm definitely going to make a post card to send in. As a feminist artist how can I pass it up?

Thank you to everyone who supports our project. In response to the choice of song I made -- I did, at first, think I should use a female artist for my video; however, I don't believe that the message in this song is any less worthy just because it was done by a male. This song is about having an anthem (in our case, women's rights) to celebrate and share. I also thought using a popular song like that would reach a greater audience and, because it is a man singing, undermine the false accusation that feminists are sexist. There are plenty of opportunities for Antigone's videos to feature women artists. My next video will be about Vancouver's Int'l Women's Day event and is going to feature a group of women artists I'm sure we'll all agree on.

Best,

K Lau

Okay - Uncle!
K Lau, I'm in Seattle, so I've heard loads of great Female singers from BC. One of my faves is Lily Frost.

I'm the oppositve of an artist - but I'll work on my submission over the weekend.

Wow, when did I become such a softie?? Stuff like this, "Girl's Rock" and even that "onslaught" Dove commercial really hit me in the gut. But leave it to forum nitpicking to take me right back out of that moment.

I don't think it's nitpicking macfrugal-having a male voice there really distracted from the point for me, and many others.

You'll have to excuse me, this is going to sound a little condescending.

having a male voice there really distracted from the point for me

"The point" is to advertise an effort to empower women. To this end the video utilizes affecting personal appeals for a society less toxic to young girls and women, and a moving ( and apparently, popular) song. Or perhaps we can look at the larger "point", making the world a better place for young girls and women.

This advertisement for either of these points is undermined by a male singer? The very presence of maleness? You can watch that video and instead of saying "wow, what a great cause!" or "wow, that's really important", you can say "hey, couldn't they have found a song sung by a woman??".

I really don't get that.

That video was beautiful and got me thinking about what kind of world I hope my daughters will live to see
Well I know what I'm doing friday night! I am all about collages :)

why yes macfrugal, you do sound condenscending. It is possible to make a point without doing so.

MY point is that while sitting there enjoying the messages on the cards, I'm distracted by thoughts like "how many female musicians are there?" "Why isn't a female musician being used to support the message about women"

It makes a difference in the larger context of the message TO ME. Perhaps not to you-and that's fine. But for me, it was sad that a woman wasn't used, especially in a world where most of the "voices" I hear are male.

Pardon me for being distracted and having part of the message ruined. I'm glad it wasn't for you.

Quick question--is additional postage required to get the postcard to Canada from the U.S.?

That was beautiful!

The one that said "no girl will be told she can't dance because of her weight" almost made me cry because I've been there. I was always the chubby kid, but I also loved my ballet classes. Until one day when I asked the owner of the studio when tryouts were for the annual Nutcracker production they did and she blatantly ignored me. Then the next day the auditions were announced on a sign that said "if you are thin, you may try out."

And not to be petty or snarky, but this studio owner wasn't exactly a pixie.
