Commemorating Roe's Anniversary, Blogging for Choice
For the past two years, I've blogged for choice on the anniversary Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal. Today, on the 35th anniversary, NARAL Pro-Choice America calling on bloggers to answer this question: Why do you vote pro-choice? I'll be featuring links to blog posts on choice throughout the day, but to kick things off - here's why I vote pro-choice.
I vote pro-choice because I believe in bodily integrity;

It's a great idea to blog about why we vote pro choice-- let's get the positive energy flowing!
I vote pro choice because I believe that women cannot be fully equal to men in a society that does not allow them complete reproductive freedom.
I vote pro choice because reproductive freedom should not be a reward for women who have the means to access birth control, but for every single woman in the US and the world.
I vote pro choice because I just can't stand to look at another photo of white male politicians laughing and clapping while they disregard my bodily integrity. No woman is an incubator for the state.
I vote pro-choice because I believe that it is every individual's right to decide what they can and cannot do to their own body.
I vote pro-choice because I believe that no one person, whether elected, appointed or ordained, should have the right to reguate the body of another human being.
I vote pro-choice because to do otherwise would be to blatantly disregard the unalienable freedoms afforded to us by constitution.
I vote pro-choice because I believe that women are much better equipped to decide what they should do with their bodies than I am.
Because, at the age of 8, my sister taught me that quality of life is more important than quantity by dying in a hospital after 16 months of painful life struggling with an immune system that would only fight against her and not for her.
I'm blogging for choice because I remember the bad old days all too well. For the "crime" of exercising our sexuality, we risked our bodies and our lives just trying to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.
Today, I posted the brief statement I made at the 2004 funeral of Ruth Surgal, who was one of the leaders of Jane.
Jane was the Abortion Counseling Service of Women's Liberation in the pre Rod v. Wade days. Jane performed over 11,000 illegal abortions in a safe and comfortable environment.
I didn't know Ruth in her Jane days, but we became friends in 1999 and I still miss her dearly.
Thanks for the chance to talk about why choice is important. When we fail to vote pro-choice, we put the laws that protect women's lives in jeopardy.
It is essential that we not only understand why choice is important, but that we take action to ensure that reproductive freedom, to the extent that we have it, stays intact.
I'm not as eloquent as many bloggers, but as I say in my entry, I'm pro-choice because I think that women should and must be trusted to make decisions regarding their own bodies.
I am pro-choice because to not be goes against some of the most basic American principles.
I am pro-choice because it's the position that makes sense, and I feel the need to combat the anti-choice scare tactics and misinformation.
I am pro-choice because what I do with my body is none of their damn business, just as it is none of my business what other women choose to do with theirs.
I am pro-choice because even though I will never face the difficult decision of whether to carry a pregnancy to term, many women that have been important and influential in my life have, and someday it is likely that many more will.
I am pro-choice because abortions will happen anyways; the difference will be women dying as a result.
I am pro-choice because lack of access to abortions disproportionately affects poor women.
I am pro-choice because I and other women are not children who need to have decisions made for us, despite what the Supreme Court may say.
I am pro-choice because every day people do things that they *may* regret sometime later in life, and I don't understand why the possibility that some woman *may* regret having abortions should be treated any differently.
It's sad that we would even have to consider voting for a constitutional right, but that's the state of the deteriorating judiciary these days. Most other Western countries, and probably a few Eastern ones, take such a right for granted.
I did a voice blog over at Utterz. (The downside to doing the voice blog is that I'm kind of rambling a little, and I forgot where I got the number 216 million women who have died because of limited or no access to abortion.) I also wanted to try and make sure that people knew that women don't just get abortions because it's convenient, but for a variety of reasons. (Like existing children, post-partum depression issues, financial readiness, whatever.)
Regardless, I did raise my voice and blog about the issue. It's very important that we retain rights to decide on our own medical procedures for our health and happiness.
I've never known life without Roe v. Wade, but I don't want to imagine life without it.
I vote pro-choice because it is the right thing to do. No one should take away my rights - physical or mental - no matter who's in charge. Blog for choice!
I vote pro-choice because it is the right thing to do. No one should take away my rights - physical or mental - no matter who's in charge. Blog for choice!
Blogging for choice does make me happy, which is a nice counterpoint to how angry I feel when I think of someone taking away my mental and physical rights as a woman. I vote pro-choice because it is the right thing to do.
i vote pro-choice because i believe every child should be wanted and no one should be punished with a baby for perceived sexual impropriety.
i vote pro-choice because men and women will never be truly equal unless women have dominion over their own bodies.
i vote pro-choice because i believe that the constitution is a living, breathing document.
i vote pro-choice because the people who are most affected by reproductive restrictions are the people most likely to be already held back by socioeconomics.
i vote pro-choice because abortion will never, ever go away, no matter what any legislative, judicial or executive body decides. abortion should be safe and available to every woman, everywhere.
i vote pro-choice because it could be me. it could be someone i love. it could be any woman without the resources or the desire or the capacity to stay pregnant.
This is a great video on the Jane Collective -- a group that performed over 11,000 abortions and taught other women to do so even before abortion was legal.
A great piece of herstory!!
I vote pro-choice because women are full human beings
I vote pro-choice because the right to life does not include the right to another’s body.
I vote pro-choice because no one’s body should be put into involuntary servitude for another, regardless of whether someone else tries to blame them for the situation
I vote pro-choice because women have the right to the medical care they choose, instead of only that which serves a fetus.
I vote pro-choice because women have a full right to own their sexuality
I vote pro-choice because forcing a woman to continue a pregnancy is a form of sexual assault
I vote pro-choice because I have two beautiful children by choice, one of them a daughter who I will stand up for and defend no less than my son.
I vote pro-choice because it's part of my belief that no woman should have a child she doesn't want, and no woman should be prevented from having a child she does want.
I vote pro-choice for all the women, like my Mom, who choose not to risk their lives for a pregnancy when they already have a born-child who needs them.

I vote pro-choice because I, too, don't want women to die.
I vote pro-choice because women have a natural right to make their own choices about their bodies.
I vote pro-choice because there is no other reasonable option.
I vote pro-choice because anti-choicers revel in their power over women.
I vote pro-choice because I care about women.
I vote pro-choice because every child should be a wanted child, and a child that can be given a decent life.
Jessica, I thank you so much. You're book actually was the deciding factor to turn me pro-choice. So I'm grateful for that in my life:)
