I know I'm a bit late on this, but I think considering how horrifying Crisis Pregnancy Centers are--definitely better late than never.
Last week republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee toured the Carolina Pregnancy Center:
“Sometimes those of us in the pro-life community have been known for what we’re against — that we don’t want to see an unborn child have his or her life ended prematurely and unnecessarily. And yet it’s not enough to be known for what we’re against. We have to be known for what we’re for, which is being for life, Huckabee told volunteers after touring the center.
That's true, you should let voters know what you're for. If Huckabee stands by the work at the Carolina Pregnancy Center, here's what he's for...
Telling young and low-income women that they shouldn't worry about the financial burdens of caring for a child: "It can be very scary to have financial difficulties, but there are a lot of possible solutions...Today's schools often give aid to single mothers or a job could always come through...A lot can change financially in nine months!"
Lying to rape survivors: "You are in a very unusual circumstance (conception from rape is extremely rare) and it is understandable that you would be frantic. But don’t allow the rapist to further impact your situation by causing you to end the live of an innocent child."
Downplaying the reality of pregnancy: "A normal pregnancy lasts only 40 weeks, a relatively short amount of time in your whole life."
Shaming women considering abortion: "If you get the abortion, you will always remind him of something he isn't proud of."
Crisis Pregnancy Centers lie to women. They intimidate women. They manipulate women. No candidate should support their work--no matter what they believe about choice.

Every time Huckabee talks I want to hurt him. A lot can change financially in 9 months? My dad told me never to take an offer that says "Pay nothing for the next year!" because it's impossible to know where you will stand in a year, and if you don't have the money now, it's safe to assume you won't then-- even if you plan to get a job. Rule number one of economics and budgeting is don't spend or plan to spend money that you don't already have.
Also, what would impact a woman's life more: 1) A quick, safe, clinical abortion of a fetus or embryo, or 2) carrying a child to term, raising them for eighteen years, and never being able to look at them without remembering the most traumatic moment of her life?
I also love how pro-life advocates always like to say "It's just nine months!" No, it's ten months including recovery (longer with complications) if you give the kid up for adoption and it's 20 years-- a quarter of a person's life-- if you don't.
And again, note that it's not a question of self-regret so much as not doing something that will disappoint your partner...
The Carolina Pregnancy Center's post-abortion "counseling" is actually a Bible-study group.
Why does this not surprise me?
Huckabee genuinely scares me. His attitude about the financial burden of raising a child reeks of privilege and his overall attitude towards the reproductive choices of women is condescending and disgusting.
Today's schools often give aid to single mothers or a job could always come through...A lot can change financially in nine months!"
I... I don't even have the words at how ridiculous this argument is.
"If you get the abortion, you will always remind him of something he isn't proud of."
WTF?? Won't an abortion mean an ABSENSE of a reminder? And what is it "He" isn't proud of? Let me guess, sleeping with miss slutty mcslut who couldn't keep her legs shut, right? Even if she's his wife.
Any group who believes that a man's regret is worse than the pain of a rape victim really frightens me.
Mike Huckabee hates women. He is a horrible person and not only needs to drop out of the race, but drop off the face of the earth.
And along with what Basiorana said, these people never consider that fact that some women might actually regret putting their child up for adoption or raising a child. Every person who makes choices is vulnerable to regret. That's the difference between making a choice and having the choice made for you. I guess the people at the CPCs think that if you force someone to do something, there won't be any regret.
"If you get the abortion, you will always remind him of something he isn't proud of."
Who is "he" and why do we care what "he" thinks?
The thing about "him" being ashamed is in the answer to a question about a guy who says he'll leave you if you don't get an abortion. Which I think we all agree is a scummy thing to do anyway, so who gives a damn what "he" thinks?
Hidden within the steaming pile of patriarchal shit that is this "crisis center"'s FAQ:
"... it isn't wise to make a life-altering decision based on what someone else dictates."
I wish I had skillz to hack into their site and blow this phrase up to about a size 60 font.
Why do these anti-abortion pamphlets always sound like someone in the final, frantic stages of a movieland break up?
"Honey, I know you're in a very unusual circumstance. A lot can change financially in nine months! Listen, just give me a little time - 40 weeks - that's a relatively short amount of time in your whole life. Please. I just don't want you to always remind me of something I'm not proud of. Whaddaya say?"
This is always the part where she drives away and we're all supposed to feel sorry for the poor guy that just got dumped, but we're really all thinking he's a total loser.
Ugh. Huckabee's views make me very sad. From interviews, he's actually one of the most likable candidates in the race -- if elections were about personality, he would have a damn good shot at getting my vote.
But he's just... so... fucking... WRONG! About everything! Now, I will give credit where it's due -- Huckabee is running on a populist platform, which means he actually favors expanding government programs such as welfare and the like (from my understanding, at least) -- so he may actually be one of those few "pro-lifers" who actually wants to make it easier to *raise* the kid. However, he's still just as much of a slut-shamer as the very worst pro-lifers.
As a libertarian, I find Huckabee the *most* distasteful of any of the candidates. He's like the anti-me.
I love (and by "love" I mean "hate") the thinly-veiled "empowerment"-type message behind the "don't let the rapist control you and your decisions!!!" statement. Can it.
TLF, I know what you mean about his likeability. He's been on the Colbert Report several times, and each time I saw one of those interviews, I felt like I was in the twilight zone or something. He seems genuinely personable and funny (and the Report is a truly awesome show), but at the same time I know that he wants to take away my civil rights.
They don't call him "WTF Huck" for nuthin'.
I love the "don't worry, just wing it" response to the financial worries about getting pregnant. You and the kid probably won't end up on the street. Why not just wait and see? Will that apply to his foreign policy as well? I mean seriously. People are actually backing this guy?
After reading that huge list of bullshit from the CPC's website, I quite genuinely feel like crying. It fucking sucks knowing that people that cruel, hateful and emotionally manipulative exist in this world.
In the advice to rape victims part of the FAQ:
"You are in a very unusual circumstance (conception from rape is extremely rare)"
Then, in their Rape and Abuse page:
"• In 2002, there were 247,730 victims of sexual assault.
• Up to 4,315 pregnancies may have resulted from these attacks."
So, 2% is "extremely rare," is it? Last time I checked, that term describes a less than 0.01% occurrence.
It takes a special kind of asshole to lie to a rape victim who has come to you for help.
I agree TFL. Huckabee is by far the most "human" of all the republican candidates, and I can easily see why someone might vote for him, knowing very little about his policies.
That Carolina Pregnancy Center website is just beyond depressing to me--its ignorance, righteousness, and outright cruelty are almost moving me to tears.
For full disclosure, I need to state up front that I am four months along through a really, really shitty pregnancy, so my opinion is most certainly influenced by those pesky hormones, (just like those silly women in New Hamsphire!).
"If you get the abortion, you will always remind him of something he isn't proud of."
Right, because pregnancy affects him so much more than you! Remember ladies, it's his body that will be forever altered and compromised (stress incontinence, anyone?). He's also the one who, in the event that he doesn't choose to put the baby up for adoption, will be doing the lion's share of the child care, education, and will take the financial dive in case you stop supporting him. He's the one at a huuuuuuuuge risk for post partum depression and slut-shaming, too, and in 4,315 cases, he's the one who "fell" pregnant via the most violating and vicious acts one person can perform on another, even though the chance of such was "extremely rare." Not to mention that 10 months of gestation and 18 years of poop-wiping is actually a really, really long time, and if he happens to have his health compromised by the pregnancy or has a stressful labor, then he may end up with PTSD (trufax, based on anecdata).
After all they go through, the poor dears need some compassion, after all.
While the Huckster (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/huckster) does appear to be the most personable of the Republican candidates, there is something about him that gives me the skin crawlies. He just seems to set off my BS meter for some reason, and when I see things like this I understand why: http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/01/14/is-huckabee-rapture-ready/
Dear Lazyweb - Has anyone ever asked Huckabee about his stand on women's rights/abortion rights/welfare somewhere where there were cameras rolling? And if so, why haven't we turned it into an advert?
I'm sure the debates had plenty of the whole "doctors are evil/women are deluded" argument re: abortion, but I want to see something come out of his mouth that we can exploit/expose/turn into an ad.
Abortion providers lie to women. They intimidate women. They manipulate women. No candidate should support their work--no matter what they believe about choice.
Fixed that for ya!
They can't even get their phony facts straight on their own website.
2. Do not allow anyone to sell you an abortion prior to the 8th week of pregnancy.
Providers will sell you an abortion but then will not "guarantee success" prior to the eighth week. The fetus is simply too small to locate.
8. Know what abortion is and why it is such a difficult and painful decision.
Why so painful? You cannot have a surgical abortion prior to the eighth week (seventh at best). By this time the fetus is well developed, complete with fingers, even fingerprints and a fully recognizable body to go with them. The heart has been beating for over a month; it has an entire nervous system and can feel pain. The fetus is a separate person with a different genetic code from yours; very likely a different blood type and possibly gender. The fetus is in your body but is not a part of your body. Make sure you don’t deny yourself this vital information.
So which is it, a tiny blob that can't be detected, or a giant cooing toddler? Why, it's whatever best suits are agenda of making women feel as miserable as possible!
How Does an Abortion Increase My Risk of Getting Breast Cancer?
When you become pregnant your body produces a surge of the hormone estrogen. This causes the cells in the breast to multiply rapidly in the first half of the pregnancy. In the second half, other hormones are produced to stop this rapid growth and to direct these cells to perform new functions such as producing milk. These last changes protect the cells against cancer-causing substances. When you have an abortion, all of those millions of cells are left immature and growing too fast. Without the second surge of hormones to turn off the growth and direct the cell, they are left open and vulnerable to cancer.
It's obnoxious when they just spit out lines like "ABORTION CAUSES BREAST CANCER!" It's kind of funny, though, to watch them try to appear scientific and explain why.
locomotivebreath1901: There are blatant lies on the Crisis Pregnancy Website, like the "information" about an 8 week fetus being capable of feeling pain, when the Journal of the American Medical Association states that fetal pain perception isn't possible until at the very earliest the 23rd week of gestation. Also information about "abortion and breast cancer," when if there was an risk for abortion causing cancer, spontaneous abortion (i.e., miscarriage) would be just as likely to cause it, and studies linking breast cancer and abortion are extremely flawed, whereas more rigorous studies found no such link.
Last I checked, Planned Parenthood's didn't open up next to Crisis pregnancy centers and pretend to be CPCs, but CPCs have a habit of making it look like they offer abortion services, open up offices near abortion providers and have ambiguous names, and then stalking and manipulating women who accidentally walk into their clutches.
I was all over that website and cannot begin to discuss how disgusting that was. The more I read, the more I couldn't believe that anybody would support this.
He infuriates me.
"But don’t allow the rapist to further impact your situation by causing you to end the live of an innocent child."
Further impact? FURTHER IMPACT? HAVE HIS BABY AND DON'T LET HIM FURTHER IMPACT YOUR LIFE?
Oh, and CAUSING YOU to have an abortion? I'm sorry, the PREGNANT FUCKING RAPE SURVIVOR doesn't make that call on her own; her rapist CAUSES her to?
I just... guh. Governor, PLEASE STOP RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. You scare me.
I hate Mike Huckabee and the current status of the Republican party (I wouldn't like them before...now, I don't think "hate" or "terrified" are inaccurate descriptors) and their misogynist and ultimately anti-child (in more ways then one...I think family planning/contraception benefit extant children immensely...also they're anti-child because the same assholes seem to think raising a likely impoverished child is costless and tells taxpayers to pay themselves on the back with a tax cut for "rescuing the unborn".)
I don't give a shit WHAT Huckabee says b/c he released more than one rapist--Wayne Dumond--and it had to do EXACTLY with his status as a religious crazy. He represents everything wrong with religion in politics--it pardons you from ANY "here and now" responsibility to the community and gives you a smokescreen of "piety."
He never took responsibility for Wayne Dumond or all the other violent criminals who "found Jesus" and thus were worthy of release (even though victims' families and those who actually UNDERSTAND criminals a little better than Fuckabee) said otherwise.
I want to fucking put Huckabee in jail.
Huckabee scares me. But Feministing readers responses to Huckabee definitely stop me from having a nervous breakdown when I see him.
Thanks, everyone.
Huckabee's dimples are freaky. I think he plays then up to look unsuspicious, or innocent to all those stupid right-wing christian zealots out there.
I think the more media coverage of cpcs will make readers aware of how exploitive and illegitimate they are, so when a politician visits a cpc they will be looked down upon.
How can you just hang a shingle on your door, call yourself a reproductive center and claim to be informed about reproductive health to make it available to the mass public? That should be sooo illegal. The cpc I investigated for a class paper got the basics of pregnancy wrong. They got the BASICS of pregnancy wrong!!!!
From the CPC website- "Here's the sad truth. Statistics tell us that at least 50% of relationships end after an abortion occurs."
Yeah, and the other 50% end after you have the baby, can't pay the bills, drop out of school, and he runs off with another woman. Where do they get these statistics from anyways?
This whole thing just makes me want to throw up. If for some strange reason Huckabee wins, I'm moving.

every time I read about Huckabee, I hate him even more. It's like it's not even possible...then it happens again.
The "don't kill your babiez, rape victim" thing makes me want to throw up- in his mouth.
Here's a letter from the Aiken Standard that make me sick.
Angie Sanders of the Aiken Pregnancy Center has decided to continue spreading the exact same lies that Mike Huckabee and the Carolina Pregnancy Center are spewing.
All Crisis Pregnancy Centers coerce women into carrying their pregnancies to term against the woman's will. It is time we shut down all of the CPCs.
