Quick Hit: Huckabee's fee reveals choice hypocrisy

Over the weekend, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee stated that not only should there be criminal penalties for doctors who provide abortions, but that women can't understand their own decisions.

Today, we find out that Huckabee accepted $52,000 in speaking fees from groups that conduct embryonic stem cell research and help expand access of emergency contraception.

How about that.

Well, if he supports stem cell research, I may actually vote for the guy.

Oh wait, I forgot he's a idiot.

So, which Mike is the real one?

Don't answer that - I don't give a shit - because I am voting for Sen. Clinton.

So, what stem-cell research and EC-promoting groups actually gave money to Mike Huckabee? That disturbs me far more than his acceptance of it.

Non olet.

I can see how Huckabee would have no problem taking money from groups that support choice, stem cell research and increasing access to EC.

I can't understand how groups that support those things would be okay giving money to Huckabee.

Normally, I'd be pissed that a front-running presidential candidate is such a hypocrit, but I hate the guy so much already, it's hard for this to bother me any more than seeing his name at the top of a post does.

Once they paid him what did he talk about? What could he possibly have to say that would be worth $52,000? I'm so glad I've never contributed to those particular groups if that's how my pro-Choice money is going to be spent. I hope they're embarassed and a little bit smarter with their funds from now on.

I would like to see the source where he says that women arent capable of making that choice. can anyone find me that?

Our buddy just won the Iowa caucus.

Here's some interesting info on him http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2007/11/13/huckabee/.

Free-woman, I think the post was referring to a very recent post about him, where he said he wants abortion outlawed but only doctors, not women getting abortions, to face charges. He said the women were "victims."

The article is linked to in the first bit of hypertext, Free-woman.

The silver lining to this is maybe he will support these supporters of his when it comes to making laws. Politicians understand donors far better than they understand voters.

Not to be nit-picky, but my school has paid speaking fees for assholes like Mike Adams and Phyllis Schlafly to come here, but that is because our college Republicans get a school budget with a certain amount alotted that goes to bringing in speakers. It doesn't mean that Phyllis Schlafly supports the liberal atmosphere at Agnes Scott, or our prominent LGBT community here. Huckabee is governor, I imagine a lot of organizations have the governor speak at events, even if they disagree with what the governor thinks. I agree, though, I would be pretty pissed off if a stem cell group I donated too invited an anti-stem cell research person to speak and paid them.

I don't want to defend Huck. He let a rapist go free because he "found god". He thinks the Earth is 6000 years old and he knows Jesus is coming back soon, so why worry about the future?

But, there are some religious people who believe the life begins at implantation and not at conception. The difference may be small but has huge consequences. It means that frozen embryos are not human life, and EC doesn't cause an abortion but simply preent ovulation (an possibly implantation).

And as FemiDancer pointed out, speakers are sometimes brought in to present another side of the debate. A group of stem cell researchers might want to listen to someone who is against it, in order to understand the other side and better debate them in the future.

I spend a lot of time listening to Rush Limbaugh and Albert Mohler on the radio. It isn't because I like the guys, but because I want to know what the enemy is saying so I know how to fight against it.
