Sure I'll dance with you, but stay away from that voting booth!
Tucker Carlson, in a predictable but shining moment of misogyny, told Feminist Majority Foundation president Eleanor Smeal that women shouldn't want to get involved in politics. You know, cause it's all icky and stuff.
After Smeal remarked that we should be embarrassed that the U.S. is so far behind in terms of representation of women in politics, Carlson replied, "I'm actually not embarrassed by it at all." He continued, and here's the doozy, "I don't know why that's embarrassing. You could make the counter case that most women are so sensible, they don't want to get involved in something as stupid as politics. ...They've got real things to do." You know, like cook his dinner.
What's hilarious is that this sentiment is actually very similar to the anti-suffragist arguments from back in the day: that women shouldn't want to get involved in politics--they're too good for it! There's the famous quote, for example, from Rep. Thomas Girling who said that "women shouldn't be dragged into the dirty pool of politics."
Those were the good old days, right Tucker?

Oh my god I hate his guts. And I hated that when he was on DWTS, people I watched the show with were like, "Wow..he's a good sport. He can't be THAT bad if he's willing to make an ass out of himself on a dancing show." And I was like, no. bad. wrong. stop. gross.
Isn't that sweet of him.
But he did get started on half a decent point- why would anybody rational (male or female) want to get involved with anything as irrational as politics? Nyuk nyuk nyuk.
/snark
Benevolent sexism alert!!
Asshat.
I wanted to scream when I read that Smeal pointed out that all those men attacking Hillary gave her a gut reaction and he replied "So women see themselves as victims?"
That's just fucking great. So according to his logic, if a woman is raped or experiences discrimination, she shouldn't think of herself as a victim because then she's perpetuating the idea that women are victims. She should just keep her mouth shut and move on. ARGH. He also said it's funny she described it as a "gut reaction" because women are traditionally thought of as emotional. Right. So men can have gut reactions but we can't because then it's out fault we're seen as "emotional." God, I hate that man.
Sounds like Tucker Carlson has been askin' to be Asshole of the Week for quite some time now.
I'm gonna give him his due this week.
Thanks, Tucker. I'd forgotten that governing a country wasn't a "real thing to do."
Oh and for anyone who needs cheering up, here's Jon Stewart taking him down on Crossfire:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFQFB5YpDZE
You'll be happy to hear that Tucker's ratings are in the toilet, and rumor has it, his contract is about to expire, and his show will expire with it.
Never fear, wingnut welfare will find Tucker another gig at which he can fuck up, but with any luck he's out at MSNBC.
He sucks at whatever, so perhaps that next gig will be as short-lived as his lapdance DWTS, too.
I wouldn't be a damn bit surprised if Fox Noise Channel picks Tucker up.
Oh wow, it looks like he ditched his little bow tie. Ughh he's so creepy.
The Stewart clip was classic, thanks for the link. If MSNBC producers were smart, they would create a show where Tucker got his ass handed to him by Stewart every day. I'd definitely watch.
They could call it "Beatdown," like Olbermann's "Countdown."
I hate Tucker! I saw him when he was vehementently claiming that Hillary was playing the gender card a couple days ago and was pissed at his open display of misogyny. He is such an asshole. Tucker is working for the same network that hires Chris Matthews, and a whole line-up of sexist talking shitheads.
Aaaghhh! I spelled vehemenently wrong! Forgot to spell-check it!
Aren't Matthews and Carlson gay? I mean if they aren't they should be they hate women and adore big stupid poseur men.
And that is the essence of closet case gay Repuklican.
Matthews has the strangest cackle. Straight out of the Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz.
HeeHaaheehee.
And when Chimpy landed on the aircraft carrier he could hardly contain his oohing and aahing over the padded package Chimpy was featuring.
You'd think that after getting called a dick on national television Tucker would have learned to think before he speaks.
At least if he moved to Fox, Keith Olbermann would be able to include him in his "worst person in the world" segment.
I have no idea what to say. Like ... I don't.
That surprises me not at all. Fucker Carlson has demonstrated himself to be a delicate little flower whose dick shrivels up and falls off when in the presence of scary people like gays or women who are the slightest bit assertive. Luckily he's a hairsbreadth away from getting canceled (AGAIN), so the opportunity to crow and bask in the schadenfreude should be coming up any day now.
Apparently, like the latest STD, misogyny is going around. The fact that these people still exist appalls me to no end.
Why would women want to be involved in something as dirty and nonsensical as politics?
So that they can fix things!
Everytime I see that clip, I love Jon Stewart even more, and I reallllllly wanna strangle Tucker Carlson with his stupid bow tie.
I think that androidqueen hit the nail on the head about what Carlson was saying, aside from the misogyny:
Politics is all a game to him.
I think this is a big part of the problem with large parts of the American political media, that politics somehow is treated as though it's just a horse race, with as much real life impact as who won the Kentucky Derby this year. This point is part of what John Stewart was trying to get across: politics matters, and isn't just a glorified popularity contest. The outcomes have real, huge effects on people's lives. It often seems as though most of the media doesn't get that.
Tucker can't be taken seriously, bowtie or not.
It really pisses me off when men tell women what we're too good for. They must think that they're being nice since they're not telling us what we're not good enough for.
Ugh. Yet another reason to throw out your television set. I think America should be embarassed by this douchebag.
Could I just point out that in that picture the woman is all done up and in a tight sexy costume and heels yet he looks like he just rolled out of the frat house? How is that fair? At least put on a corresponding costume. Jesus.
slag,
I liked your link. I wonder where the fuck misogyny comes from? Why is it even after decades, centurys and even milleniums are men still spouting the same sexist crap over and over?! Where the hell does this come from?!
You find men today who perceive women from a 1950s, 1800s, and even a medieval perspective (such as the pope, and taliban)!
I wopuld love to see a investigative study to unveal it. This cant all be societal indocrination.
To quote Amanda from Pandagon:
"that kind of 'better things to do' rhetoric usually means something along the lines of, "I don't actually think that cooking and baby-rocking is that important, but since I believe women are stupid, I'll pat them on the head and tell them theirs is the most important job in the world, and the poor addle-brained dears will believe me.' While he's not outright protesting women's right to vote, he's invoking the 'angel of the hearth' argument that was used quite effectively to deny women the vote for nearly a century."
It's like when people argue against women working by saying "Being a mom is the most important job in the world!"
If they really felt that way, THEY'D do it. And they'd provide mothers with a hell of a lot more support. But they DON'T feel that way; they're just trying to trick women into staying out of the public sphere.
Tucker, here's why women get into politics and/or vote in elections: Because we live in this country too and politics DIRECTLY AFFECTS OUR LIVES.
Benevolent Sexism, Indeed.
Last month Tucker (on his show) argued that equal pay should not be legislated. His guests, 2 lawyers, I believe, disagreed. Tucker claims he is a libertarian, that's why.
He then went on to say something like, "Women are better than men, everyone knows that, most of the staff here is female. they are great. I have a house full of women"... blah Blah BLAH!!!
So full of shit- shithead!
While Carlson is a sexist and an irritating child, it's his overweening sense of privilege that screams through to me.
"Women" don't get involved in politics because it's dirty or not dirty, but because women are people and grown adult people have to survive and handle serious business. Now Tucker would not know serious business if it bit him on the scrotum; his life has been one of remarkable lazy privilege, with a few grooming and TelePrompTer reading skills.
Had Tucker Carlson been the son of a bus driver instead of the child of a upscale ghetto of wealth, he would a) know how to throw a punch and b) would view politics as being about survival and power rather than a form of entertainment that he thinks should be left, like golf and drinking Scotch in his world, to debased men.
It takes a breathtaking amount of privilege and entitlement to arrogate to oneself to decide how half the human race should live. The business of "sensible" of course is meaningless; Carlson makes his living off of politics, though in fairness he is himself senseless a lot of the time and probably assumes others who are involved in politics are equally as shallow and obtuse as he. And to say it to a lifelong feminist activist? A spoiled child.
Somebody accidentally let this child sit at the grownups' table and it's been downhill ever since.
Tucker says the Dems on stage with Hillary “aren’t manly men, but wimpy men who cry at Meg Ryan movies, drive Volvos (is that wimpy?), shop at Whole Foods (again, wimpy?)….
Why is it so often that privileged untested “men are quick to label other men unmanly? Especially easy targets like Carlson.
DallasSuz:
oh haha we don't like this guy so we call him gay because that's emasculating and funny?
wtf?
Driving a Volvo and shopping at Whole Foods may not necessarily be "wimpy", but it definitely reeks of "bougousie wealthy liberal".
How about Honda Accord and Meijer?
Or 1996 Chevy Cavalier & Safeway, like my boyfriend? He's such a wimpy liberal.
Why, how nice of him to want to shield his women from those filthy politics... just like they shouldn't be in that fast-paced, dull workplace or enjoy that filthy sex, I'm sure.
The funny thing is that it's good enough for them. They don't even know how patronizing they sound.
Beyond the blatant sexism, his remarks also highlight how easy it is for him and his ilk to make the mental leap and advocate taking the franchise away from particular populations.
I read this story and it made me so mad, I had to write Tucker a letter (and it took all my strength to refrain from calling him an asshat):
"Mr. Carlson,
Re: your recent comments to Eleanor Smeal about women's participation in the political process - perhaps black people shouldn't vote, either. Our communities are struggling under economic disenfranchisement, we're dying of AIDS in record numbers, our young men are in prison, and even the Justice Department said we all die before we get old, so it's clear that our daily lives might be too fraught to concern ourselves with voting. What is voting compared to survival?
I daresay other communities of color have pressing issues they'd rather address than voting, too. For instance, all our Latino brothers and sisters could throw their massive numbers behind immigration reform and avoiding deportation; our Moslem friends could spend their time avoiding waterboarding. Clearly, their legal issues could probably take priority over a tiny thing like voting.
And perhaps poor people shouldn't vote, either. After all, they have so much to do, what with finding and keeping a job, shelter, food and health insurance. Goodness knows none of their basic human needs issues could be remedied by VOTING.
In fact, voting is so trivial and unneccessary for the majority of the country, including women, perhaps it should only be reserved for smug, wealthy, privileged, white men."
I don't anticipate a reply but it felt good to write it.
His comments were not about women participating in politics via voting. His comments were about women choosing to go into politics as a career. The simple fact is that women are represented in the voting public at or beyond the level of their percentage of the population, and yet women are still under-represented in political positions. There are two possibilities: Either women are freely choosing not to elect women or fewer women than men are qualified and willing to run for office. If you can think of a third possibility, please let me know.
