So much love!

Gum?

The faux-lesbian make-out line sold it for me. They were all looking forward to that!

Yay for pointing out how unrealistic reality TV really is!

Query re: Bret Michaels reality show. If, after the Unskinny Bop, there was "nothing more to say," how come he's still jibber-jabbering?

Once upon a time, I heard that reality shows were on the verge of going away. A weekend with the parents who have cable and a few snippets here and there (I LOVE NEW YORK?! Kardashians who???) turned my stomach. Sigh...it was a nice dream, though.

Does anyone remember Arrested Development's spoof of Girls Gone Wild named "Girls with Low Self-Esteem?"

Ha! Love it!

Why make fun of the women when its the audience that likes to watch it. I also didnt like how they passified the 'well-adjusted' women. Isnt this just a repeat of women should always be 'good' girls, and agreeable? They also paid no attention to the male behavior on the shows. What about a nice, non-misogynistic, doesnt thinks I give a shit for a rose, non-alcoholic, non-drug addict guy who doesnt feel the need to get in fights over stupid crap reality tv show? Why did they solely focus on the females as the bad behaving ones? Doesnt that have to do with cultural assumptions about how a 'proper' woman should behave?

One of the things I didnt mind about reality tv, is how they would show women getting in fights, and being aggressive. Its sad that reality tv seems to be the only place where you can get a regular dose of women who fall out of the up-tight social expectations assumed to be womens nature in society.

Of course theyre always shown fighting over a guy, or a damned rose....arghhh!

I see where you're coming from, Gopher...

But I guess I feel that by addressing women's behavior on the shows, they are by extension addressing audience's expectations. The "and not getting banged on national television" bit was pretty sexist (look at the verb: 'getting banged' so once again /where are the menz??/) but per all but the most liberal Americans, I'm sure they would not think anything of that.

(I do think it's still a valuable commentary and an improvement over what we have now.)

Eh, I don’t know Gopher, those are “catfights, they show them on reality tv because men always like to watch a catfight, they can laugh at the women involved and joke about how catty women are.
And why make fun of the women? Because the women choose to take part in perpetrating misogyny. That audiences like to watch it does not take away the women’s agency. Yes, I know they are victims of patriarchy, but they are at the same time perpetrators.

I hear what you're saying but somehow women fighting or arguing or being angry on reality T.V. just turns into the "catty, vindictive" stereotype.
Odd since the guys on those shows fight each other over the same stupid things the women fight over. They also get banged on national television.

I will admit that I get sucked into a lot of "reality" show garbage. I know it's all crap but I can't help it. I'm trying really hard to stop watching shows that are very anti-feminist because I don't want to support the images of women they are showing. Damn you E and VH1!
