So Feministing has been nominated for several Blogger's Choice Awards, including Best Political Blog (we're in the top 3!) and Best Blog of All Time.
Apparently this has pissed off a ton of anti-feminists (who lovingly call themselves "men's rights activists"), so they've flooded the awards with votes for Feministing under Most Obnoxious Blogger and Worst Blog of All Time. In fact, they're so peeved that they've even entered their own Feministing parody site (feministing.org) under several categories in an effort to thwart votes away from us.
On one of their forums that I sometimes peek into, they're calling this their latest form of "activism" to spread the word about the evils of feminism and, of course, to "give the bitches something to whine about." They're taking it so seriously, in fact, that they've warned to "be careful about feminist spies" and talked about taking the action "underground." Awww. Seriously, some people have way too much time on their hands. Boys, I've said it before and I'll say it again: You could have just sent flowers. Kisses!
Thanks to the ever-fab Matt Ortega for the heads up.

You have hit a nerve Jessica, and the menz can't STAND IT.
Going underground, eh? Does that mean they'll shut the fuck up and we won't ever have to hear from them again? Oh pretty please say that's what it means. :)
Ha! I've accidentally typed in the site a couple times when trying to reach feministing.
I will confess to being amused by the fact that one poster on that site calls herself "Amynda"
Anyways, congrats on all of the recognition Jessica et al.!
They had a post on that website bitching about how some new studies have suggested that hormones in semen might cause cervical cancer.
Apparently, it pissed them off? What? Do they think the study was done by a bunch of "uppity feminist bitches" who just TOTALLY wanted to hate on men for having cervical cancer?
How logical.
:)
Mama always told me that when boys are bullying you, it usually means they like you. ;p
"They had a post on that website bitching about how some new studies have suggested that hormones in semen might cause cervical cancer."
Personally I prefer the studies suggesting that sperm acts as an antidepressant in women. I like to thing those little guys are doing some good, not causing cancer!
I voted for this blog on that site, but reading the comments there is pretty depressing. Vicious as hell, these guys with no shortage of name calling.
It must really suck to be so easily threatened by women speaking their mind.
Because women who think for themselves are just so...so...so... SCARY!
I feel kinda sorry for these guys. I mean, obviously they have to create a phone site and try to screw with the Blogger's Choice voting process because they're not intelligent and/or mature enough to hold a logical, civil discussion on why they disagree with what is posted.
Sometimes I feel like there is no hope in this world. When will people stop being so ignorant. How do you guys keep from losing hope?
Mandy: We mock people incessantly. That helps. ;)
I would tend to agree with Cola, but with a twist. In this case it may just mean you are effective (and that there are some angry men with WAY TOO MUCH time on their hands).
Keep spreading the feminist goodness.
They wouldn't be doing all this bullshit if they didn't know that you speak the truth.
And I noticed that feminist.org hasn't updated since February. I guess that means they realized that they're stupid. Took them long enough.
Wow. That site is seriously fucked up.
Keep up the good work feministing.com!
You know, as crappy parody websites, this one was unusually shiteous. I guess we should be flattered they bothered at all, but the original is SO much cooler. (Not to mention relevant.) So thanks, Jessica and team! You've earned your kudos and then some!
Haha! I guess that would help. But it's still so frustrating knowing how many people still feel that women are somehow inferior to men. Websites like this make me feel better though. And by the way Jessica, I loooooved your book. I kept reading parts of it out lous to my boyfriend and now he wants to read it. And we both want to know where to get those shirts that say "This is what a feminist looks like". Feminist guys are so hot.

It's sooooo threatening when a woman is anything more than a vagina and a head. *eyeroll*
Here's a good man story: My dad came home from work tonight really excited because the state of NY basically said "fuck you" to the federal gov't abstinence only sex "education" and refused the funding they offered and instead is using its own money to fund ACTUAL sex ed. He was also on a panel at a press conference about it. My family rocks. I gave Full Frontal Feminism to both of my parents and they devoured it.
I'm still voting for
clarissaexplainsitall.blogspot.com
Oopsie on the double post.
Anyhoo, here's a site about the New York thing. It's pretty awesome. It kind of makes me want to be Eliot Spitzer's mistress. OK, not really, but it still rocks.
http://www.getthefactsny.org/
As a man, I laughed at the term men's rights activists. That's definitely the first time I've ever heard of feminists taking away men's rights.
Still, I hope you guys take it as a compliment. It's just like the mark of a great author is ending up on the banned book list. (is Jessica there yet?)
Anyway, the other comments were funny too. I did hear about a study about semen being an antidepresent. I work with a half-dozen women, and it was a big topic of debate. (alot of girl talk during work, way more educational than school)
i wonder if they know that its people like them that actually encourge feminisim. what wankers.
Haha! Awww, shit, if there were a "loser blog of the year," I'd vote for those idiots.
Looks like THEY'RE the ones doing the bitching.
Hey, dudes, "grow some balls," get jobs, and then come back and talk to us.
I wonder if they're reading this. Can they even read? Hmmmm.
What do you imagine they look like?
Men's Rights Groups = bunch of whiny little bitchy men (and bitchy not in a good way) sitting around blaming women for their failures.
Haha! (Sorry, I am on a "haha!" roll this morning) that most of the comments on there are advertisements for porn sites or the same two losers posting over and over again?
I saw a post that supposedly had 43,000 comments. I clicked on it and there ...were ...none.
For some reason I seem to get most of my hassle from Jezebel - which claims to be a feminist site!
Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups. Sigh.
Congratulations! The comments crack me up- the MRA's are all in a tizzy. Good work!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I love this website! I use Jessica's book Full Frontal Feminism in all my Women and Gender Studies 101 classes as part of the cirriculum - I require my students to buy it and just it as the textbook! THEY LOVE IT! Her writing really reaches out to them. And I check this site daily, not just for Monty's adorable face, but to keep up to date on news and current events. Anything that is interesting or outrageous is immediately emailed to my class or used as a discussion topic. For example, I just sent out both the anorexic Halloween costume and Stripper pole for Kids articles, and required them all to comment on such events and give their opinion.
When are people going to realize that you don't have to be anti-man to be pro-woman? Maybe we should just change the name to humanism instead of feminism. After all, both mean equality for all. It's about giving the girl the ability to try out for a football team and see herself as an equal, yes. But it's also about telling that boy that feels pressured to be a football player that it's okay to play with a doll instead.
I love this site! I think I'll make a donation now....
Sorry, I must go away now, I have been called to action by one of the MRA commenters:
"Men: the time for discussion is over. Don't get married, don't co-habitate, protect yourself from sperm-snatchers, don't father any children unless you're sure you can pay the child support without going broke. Stay away from the public sector, college, big corporations, or any other place where diversity bigots can discriminate you at leisure. Set up your own business if you can. Keep informed. Spread the word. Don't argue. Pass this on to as many men as you know."
A team of comedians could brainstorm for a thousand years and not come up with anything that funny. I myself am burning my high school diploma, putting my sperm in vials in a briefcase handcuffed to me at all times, using only private roads, and selling macramed hats over the internet to support myself.
I have always considered myself a sperm-snatcher. I'm so glad someone else is finally recognizing me for who I truly am.
Thanks for passing along the validation, norbizness. :P
Some boys just never quite outgrow the whole "Ew! Girls are yucky!" phase, huh?
sperm snatchers??? WHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! What do I want with their sperm? It's messy and sticky. %P I wash it out after sex. Right down the drain it goes.
(don't worry, I'm monogamous/long term and sterile.)
There's nothing that says 'feminist' in Jezebel's tag line, but I know plenty of feminists of every kind who post there. It's for those of us trying to reconcile our feminist activism and love for crap, often misogynist, pop culture.
Re: SPERM SNATCHERS
That sounds like it would be a great horror movie! But no one would really make a movie about a woman who snatches men's sperm and kills them, would they?
Oh wait, they sort of did already: Species
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/species/
Synopsis: "She's a beautiful, horny, outer-space babe who just wants to copulate, and when she doesn't get her way, boy, does she get angry!"
*by the way, does this count as a movie featuring a "powerful woman" in the other thread from earlier this week :-)?
The thing is, the fake feministing site is so poorly done that it doesn't even work. They are attempting to lampoon and discredit feminism, but...they're so fucking stupid and talentless that it just comes off as utterly boring and sleep inducing. I can't even be bothered to get upset, it sucks so bad. If anything, it ends up lampooning itself. It comes off about like this:
hewwo i is a mail shovinest pigg. i has trubble typing with one fingur while wanking with my othur hand. but even so i maded this websight so reel men culd get a laff off of those stoopid wimenz. a hur hur hur!!! see i iz so clevur. i even fuckded up ther logo. i putted in liek catagoreez n shit so peepul wood not notiss that all my artikulz is basikly tha same. i also spoofded tha profilez uv wimenz frum fiminest websights. my carikaturz iz so smart n funnee! i no that reel mens everywhar iz going tu luv my sight. it putz wimenz in thar plase. a hur hur hurrrrr!!!
I'm now envisioning a movie: Invasion of the Sperm Snatchers. Picture crazed women wearing "This is What a Feminist Looks Like" tees and chanting "Sperm, Sperm, Sperm." When these depraved zombies find a man, they overpower him and take his testicles. Then they extract the sperm, impregnate one of the zombie-feminists (via turkey baster, of course) and then force the poor testicle-free man into a life of poverty due to restrictive child support payments.
The sad thing is, a lot of these MRAs probably think it's already happening.
I voted for feministing as the best political blog and best blog of all time -- and I really mean it.
Thanks so much for keeping this site up, ladies. It is great to feel like there is a feminist community I can be part of, and I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into this site.
Gothchiq, I think you just invented MRA macros.
manda - Sounds good, but only if the man is the lead. ;)
that most of the comments on there are advertisements for porn sites or the same two losers posting over and over again?
I noticed that too.
Most of them seem to be very upset that women don't want their "protection." But beware ladies, when the muslims invade and/or a nuclear bomb is dropped...then will need the menz to protect us! (I'm not clear on whether the nuclear bombs will be dropped by the invading muslims or if it will be a completely seperate event)
Lord only knows what they think of the men who comment here. You boys should be protectin us womenz from all the other menz, not talkin to us like intelligent human beings. How dare you treat a woman with the same respect you treat a man? Gosh!
Um... isn't it kinda, well, ignorant for them to say that you're all upper-class college-education white girls when a lot of people in charge are, well... not white at all?
Yup. Not to mention, I doubt they'd stick the the "upper class" thing if they saw where Vanessa and I grew up, lol. That's just another antifeminist tactic--they know that a sore spot in the feminist movement is how white, middle to upper class gals got all the glory and shit, so they harp on it as a way to attempt to discredit all feminism.
What a bunch of wankers.
Stay away from the public sector, college, big corporations, or any other place where diversity bigots can discriminate you at leisure.
You know, I have no problem whatsoever with misogynists following this bit of advice. Go for it, guys! Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out!
Congrats to the editors, two major nominations and a spoof site make for an impressive list of accomplishments. Keep up the good work and I hope Feministing wins in both categories. You most certainly deserve it.
I went and voted for you guys! And voted stupid feministing.org for "most obnoxious"
Also though, I nominated Feminist Review for best pop culture blog! If you like them too go vote :)
To Cruella: I think that Jezebel is an anti-male site. They talk very candidly about how much fun it is abusing their boyfriends (won't share any of those posts here). And yes, they do use misogynist and misandrist insults on their site.
To Jessica and everyone else here: congratulations on your nominations. I tried to vote for Feministing as the Best Political Blog, but the site said that I must register in order to vote.
Oh, goodies. In the "Worst Blog" category, one of the fellows has posted the URL for a portion of my brief venture of discovery into MRAville after his banning here as proof of an "ordeal."
I cast my vote long ago for this site. It would be nice if it got recognition, but that's icing. Feministing.com looks to me like a smashing success with or without the award. So, in lieu of congratulations, I offer sincere thanks for the success (and the haven) it is already.
Am I the only one who hears "sperm snatcher" and gets a mental image of a particularly sticky, nasty dreamcatcher?
