Torture by hair care products.
Apparently, in light of Bush claiming that we don't use torture methods in our war tactics (cough-bullshit-cough), it is OK to use torture imagery to sell products. Add a little sexy, sultry, brunette action and you are good to go.
It is all about sex and violence to sell products and women's hair products are so important that of course we need the strictest of *interrogation* tactics.

To add insult to injury, the "repairs 98% of all damage" is total bullhonkey. So female consumers get patronised again.
Well, she is torturing herself, which is accurate when it comes to looking "beautiful." So it has that going for it. This isn't my least favorite SunSilk commercial. The one with the women flipping their hair is way worse in my opinion. It has women competing against one another for something that really doesn't matter anyway, and it has a doctor scolding a grown woman.

I don't think it's exactly a glowing example of progressive advertising, but I do think what they were going for was a Reservoir Dogs parody thing. I guess they didn't think about the resonance it would have, what with torture being in the news and so forth.
It is in fact using sex and violence to sell women('s products).
... I find it more reminiscent of light bdsm, however, than a proper interrogation, especially considering the "therapist" bit at the end; sadomasochism has been considered a psychological problem for so long (reminiscent of other "alternative sexualities") that that was the first thing my mind went to.
Considering other adds I've seen here, this one is beyond tame.
That's disturbing. I see this commercial fairly frequently on TV, but it's always just the bit with the woman on the chair talking to the man as if he were her doctor or psychiatrist. Actually, they may have added some context before that, but I have never seen this torture lead-up. They must have had complaints and cut that part off! Let's hope so.
Ugh, I have hated these Sunsilk commercials since I first saw them. They also have a few that pit blondes against brunettes - because what's better to sell products than pitting sexy women against more sexy women? I wrote them an angry email about it awhile back and I haven't seen those commercials in awhile. Looks like they haven't improved much though.
Bowleserised, i don't know if it's patronizing more than it is misleading.
They actually say "UP TO 98%" which could be any where from zero up to 98. And there's no real way for us to qualify that from home.
What about this creepy Razr ad? The woman wins but it is just disgustingly violent

I can see the reference to violence (the Reservoir Dogs torture scene), but where is the sex?
I got the same impression about this as l.short. I didn't think of it as a real "torture" thing; I thought the idea was a mutually pleasurable and beneficial bdsm scene between you and your hair.
i am so not shocked....that this is a "sunsilk" advert. they have the worst track record for mysogionist advertising EVER! does anyone remember the first one they did where if your hair isn't silky and shiny you disappear into insignificance and people only want you to hang their coats on. anyone?
I've never seen someone smile so much while being tortured.
