Quick Hit: Pro-choice advertising ads and a TV debut!

Remember the above ad? Well NY1, the local station here in New York City, just did a short piece on it and our own Vanessa made her television debut in the segment. Fun.

"I don't think a woman's right to choose is shrinking," said New Yorker Steve Strauss. "I think Roe vs. Wade is still in effect, right? So they still have the same opportunity to make their choice as they ever did."
Someone's been living under a rock for the past thirty years while the right to an abortion has been slowly chipped away...
Congrats, Vanessa!
Most of the people interviewed sounded really dumb (for lack of a better word), and that’s in NYC, which makes me wonder what would happen if they put up that billboard in, say, Arkansas.
Plus why couldn’t the article mention the name of Vanessa’s blog?
"I think it's a little bit over the top, a little bit shocking, a little bit unacceptable and I think they should take it down, said New Yorker Gerry Creamer.
"I've always felt that their ads were just a little risqué, just a little unsettling, but I think that takes it too far, added New Yorker Kirsten Carlson.
“I think it’s kind of crazy that they put it up there like that, added New Yorker Dalton Adams. “I think it’s a little disrespectful. I think it’s a little inconsiderate and it’s big! I mean, it’s not hidden, people can see it.
Okay...but it's not shocking and disrespectful to take away reproductive rights? Is it more unsettling than your right to choose if you want to have a baby or have an abortion being threatened? How is that not taking it too far? Who exactly is it disrespectful towards? The same people who are disrespecting women's right to chose? I don't get these New Yorkers at all...
Great job, Vanessa!
Thanks, y'all. And yes, it is pretty wack they didn't mention Feministing or where I work, but that's the press for ya. Sigh.
Does anyone else feel a little weird that there a *coathanger* in the background. I mean, the company gets points for bringing the issue out into the public, but, really, a coathanger?
Well, roro8o, I think it kinda makes sense. You put hangers in your closet...but also, you'll be using hangers if abortion is made illegal...or something...
Did that make any sense?
Besides, roro80, you have to admit that it certainly got the message across. Not the most tasteful thing, possibly, but effective.
Rock Star -- Yes, it does make sense, and that's exactly what my immediate thought was. But it still makes me feel...yukky. I guess the world ain't exactly rainbows and smiles.
For some reason, I'm reminded of this:

The billboard wouldn't have made much sense without the coathanger picture. "Your closet space is shrinking as fast as her right to choose" seems a bit of an arbitrary comparison. But throw in the coathanger and you have a clever message: you're losing closet space fast (and thus have nowhere to hang your clothes), and women are losing reproductive rights fast (and thus will have to resort to using coathangers). The double comparison is what makes it effective.
