I *heart* Elizabeth Edwards in a thousand and one different ways. Can we have her for president?
Oh gosh, I love her! Did anyone understand a thing that blonde witch said? All I heard was panicked babble.
Ok, I'll vote for John Edwards. After her recent gay marriage comments and now this... I mean, John's almost as good as she is right?
I have somehow, through sheer force of will, been able to never hear anything Ann Coulter says or read anything she's written, until now. She is a truly awful human being!
Elizabeth Edwards, on the other hand, is awesome. She was the guest on the NPR show Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me a few weeks ago and I thought then that I wish she was the one running for president. This video and the link to Pandagon just prove it further.
I love Elizabeth Edwards as well. I'm voting for John in the primary...unless Gore gets in (or as my mother predicts, is drafted at the Convention).
Ann Coulter's business is conservative porn. She spews hate speech that a white man can no longer say without censure on national television venues (white men, think Rush, still spew the hate speech on AM radio), but still somehow by virtue of being a woman she can say the most racists, sexist, classist, and religio-philic/phobic sentiments allowed on "mainstream" media today. Its like those minority correspondents on Fox who advocate the "N-word" or other racial slurs as fair-use language because they accurately reflect "most black people" or "most X people" today (I actually saw one correspondent claim this). This "I've escaped the ghetto of race or gender discrimination and now that I'm "successful" I see that there is no such thing as prejudice or privilege, only hard work and laziness, therefore all women/minorities who are in poverty or can't succeed fail because they aren't good enough, not because there is some kind of "system" of privilege or prejudice blocking some and giving a leg up to others" line of thinking pervades all of these hate-mongers of the far right. Michelle Malkin (internment of minorities is good for the US of A), Coulter (911 widows are bitches and John Edwards is a F&*$##@), and even Andrew Sullivan who, though a gay-man, holds extremely restrictive gender roles for women and would just as soon have women bare-foot and pregnant as the next patriarchy-advocate; then there are the less-famous, but equally utilitarian figures who appear on Fox representing a variety of people of color and advocate for racist policies, gender and sexual orientation prejudice, and other nightmares. All of these folks capitalize on their "difference" to justify, as O'Reilly calls it, the white-male power structure of the US. They profit short term by selling everyone else out. And most progressive commentators? White men. Now I love my progressive white brothers, but the fact that such a display of the varied progressive side is represented narrowly and that the highly homogenous, white male conservative right is promoted by a much more diverese, yet significantly lower than average showing of hate-mongers, its gets me right in the gut.
Long rant, I know, but one thing, let's try to avoid the "Ann Coulter is a Tranny" argument. She's the one who specializes in personal attacks and using her methods isn't going to help progressives. Pointing out that she's a fuzzy thinker, that she uses false information and outright lies--much better. Saying that she's a male-to -female transexual just hurts the lovely and brave transexuals that are just starting to have more of a voice in our society.
Peace
Coulter looked nervous as hell. Did you notice all the fidgeting and hair-flipping?
Can't we have all state recognised unions as civil unions and marriage left to religious people?
I'd much rather a civil union to my partner and to be on the same level as gay people than accept all the assumption and baggage of marriage anyway.
While I can't get behind Edwards, my god, how I love Elizabeth and absolutely respect her dignity and poise over a telephone whose other ended was pointed at a woman who has often made cameos in my nightmares as a fanged wind demon with special happiness-killing abilities.
The thing that gives me the most hope in this video is the way the crowd cheered as Edwards finished one of her statements.
I heart Elizabeth Edwards. That clip there just sealed and cremated the coffin of Ann Coulter forever for me.
I desperately want to refrain from personal attacks, but she looks and sounds like Lucifer incarnate.
I was hoping you'd cover this.
It's about time someone told Ann to STFU.
The real question is why in the world does ANYONE like Ann Coulter? She is so obnoxious and rude - always. She just makes my teeth hurt.
I'm glad she admitted that without a lot of low brow, hateful attacks she's got nothin'
21stCenturyMom; I've never met a woman who liked her, but I've encountered men who like her. Mostly, as someone else noted, it seems to be because she says what they "can't" say.
Elizabeth Edwards for president! The fact that she did this is good enough, but I cannot stand Ann Coulter, who 'says what everyone else is afraid to say'? If that's the case, I'm worried about everyone else.
The thing that gives me the most hope in this video is the way the crowd cheered as Edwards finished one of her statements.
A seemingly Republican crowd at that!
Moxie, my mom likes her.
*barfs*
Urgh...
About the only positive things I can say about Ann Coulter is that she has an impressively sized ego and is very glib ...if those can be considered positive.
Also, I too heart Elizabeth Edwards....if she won't run for president, maybe she can run for vice president? Hmmmm?
did coulter just basically admit that everything she's said and written is hate speech? because every time edwards asked her to stop using hate speech and instead speak about the issues, coulter's response was to sarcastically (and nervously) ask "well then i should stop writing? i should stop speaking?"
I love that woman. I wish she were the one running for President.
I loved the part where Ann asks "Why isn't John Edwards making this call?" as if Elizabeth doesn't have a right to be offended all on her own and make an independent decision about calling in . . . as if he's somehow shirking responsibility by, what, ordering his wife to do his dirty work? Ridiculous.
And of course Elizabeth Edwards totally held onto the conversation and asserted her right to be speaking out.
Hooray for articulate, dignified protest!
High five to Elizabeth Edwards!
And Ann Coulter wears the same dress every day. She must smell like dead birds.
I love how Elizabeth Edwards is capable of being so incredibly intelligent, classy, and polite in the face of Coulter's bile. And that article only cements my newfound love. Wow.
Edwards raises millions of dollars "for the poor", no-one knows where it is, Coulter calls him out, and his wife calls to complain. Oh yeah - she's a hero.
"Hooray for articulate, dignified protest!"
completely agree. i have the utmost respect for anyone who can do that. ESPECIALLY when speaking to Ann Coulter. sheesh.
and i completely second Elizabeth running for pres...I can't get completely behind what John has to say but a lot of what Elizabeth has been saying lately has been right on!
a couple of MSNBC interns came up to a group of us CODEPINKers in front of the White House yesterday as they were about to film this show and told us we could have a chance to "pummel Ann Coulter." being nonviolent folk, the chance to pummel anyone is not terribly enticing. instead of giving her more fuel for hair-flipping and tongue lashing, we declined. there really is no point in engaging. we chose not to legitimize her with attention- even though we would would have loved to get in a dig secretly. and sounds like elizabeth and chris held their own...
Was anyone else hoping for a rotten tomato to come flying from the crowd and hit Ann Coulter smack dab in her evil, hate spewing face? Go Elizabeth! I probably would have flown off the handle if I had been given the opportunity to speak to Ann Coulter!
Elizabeth Edwards is awesome. I love how Ann Coulter had nothing to say except "that was so long ago." Like the amount of time takes away from how awful the things she says are. If I saw anyone who made fun of me for being fat when I was little I'd still call them out on it and that was 15 years ago. When someone says something hurtful, the amount of time that's passed doesn't make it go away. I'm actually quite impressed at how poised Edwards sounded throughout the call. If it were me I probably would have lost my temper and said things they couldn't have aired.
buffythewhite:
regardless of your reasons for disliking John Edwards, or thinking Ann Coulter is anything other than mentally unbalanced, what about Elizabeth Edwards asking for an actual dialogue on political issues (as opposed to "he's a faggot") and that Coulter not mock the fact that they have a dead son strikes you as unreasonable?
PS: Has anybody else noticed Coulter is completely incapable of directly answering anything?
PPS: I love what Chris said at the end - totally driving home Elizabeth's point. Because honestly, what do Hillary's fat thighs have to do with ANYTHING?
re: Ann's inability to to answer a straight question, that seems to be a pretty common trait among evil people. Not giving straight answers enables them to say one thing now, and do or say another later.
I can say with honesty that I'd be just as irritated with any political pundit who, instead of critiquing policies and actions, called Giuliani or even Huckabee a faggot.
The thing about Ann is that if she ceased to spout outrageous, inflammatory statements, she would have nothing to put in her books.
I mean, listen to her: she translated "stop making personal attacks" into "stop writing books." Can she not make distinctions? Is she not aware that one can write books that don't have below-the-belt attacks in them? I don't think I've ever heard or read a liberal pundit who critiqued, say, Laura Bush on her appearance.
Henry Rollins' love letter to Ann Coulter is pretty funny, actually. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iM7MR5_v47w
You should post that, Feministing. :D Not only mocks Ann but also the submissive-wife fantasy.
Coulter is living proof that during the mid-1990s, the White Aryan Resistance opened its membership to include female impersonators.
If TV news shows are going to invite this skinhead skank, why not Fred Phelps. I'm sure he'd like to plug his books, too. As soon as he finished coloring them.
Actually, I met Coulter once. She was standing at the urinal next to me in the men's room.
Ew, Jelperman. Not cool. Judge her actions, not her appearance.
Don't compliment her by calling her a drag queen. (I've dated one and he would never call anyone a faggot.)
I think it's important to fight fire with fire. If the Skinhead Skank and Tweety want to ramble on about Hillary's "chubby" legs, then I think they should be ridiculed for their appearance as well.
Besides, it's nearly impossible to argue substance with someone who, aside from incoherent abuse, has nothing of substance to argue with.
She then whines that liberals can say what they want about her but get upset when she's hateful. It makes her feel vindicated. Rise above it.
Elizabeth Edwards was totally classy and you could see Coulter was shaken.
If she has nothing of substance to say, you don't argue with her--you dismiss her. That's real pwnage.
Edwards asks Coulter to speak like an adult and Coulter's response, basically is "No way, booger head! Stop trying to control me you commie fascist."
How predictable.
Cheap shots here:
Ann Coulter needs to stop acting like she's a sex symbol. The woman (using the term loosely, because she's a child) looks like a slim jim. I don't mean that she's shaped and proportioned like one (true), I mean, she's textured like one. She's got that same kind of processed meat product grain to her face, and she just looks like she ought to be wrapped in plastic and sold for a quarter out of a jar by the cash register in a 7-11.
She surrounds herself in a rightwing sausage fest and automatically assumes everyone wants her as badly as they all do. Someone needs to get her some female friends. Too bad Leni Riefenstahl died, she would've been close t

Werechick - also in the category of if-only-she-was-alive: I'm sure she and Ann Rand would hit it off big-time! BFF!!!
@ anorak
Ayn Rand certainly held some far-right beliefs, but as far as I know she also had more than two brain cells to rub together and didn't spew vitriol like Coulter. I can't imagine that she would felt anything but disdain for this woman.
First of all, that was spectacular. I love Elizabeth Edwards, and after seeing that I love her even more. It totally made my day to see her be so classy and articulate (as usual) while Ann Coulter was twitchy and classless (as usual).
Second of all, La Fille Torpille, that Rollins clip was hilarious! I laughed the whole way through. What a great guy.
Is Ann Althouse going to make a blog entry about Ann Coulter's cleavage and what that must mean about her, and the show Hardball?
Off topic, just asking.
Rhymes with Front!
I've never hit a woman, but then again I've never had opportunity to beat the living shit out of Ann Coulter. It'd feel good, too. A man who says the things she says would catch a tune-up, mos def. This, coupled with my gender-neutrality politics, would result in a rollicking brawl; either she's got wirey-girl Abe Lincoln strength and it would be stand-up or I'm not crazy and she is really anorexic and would go down in a round. Won't you Join Me? Together, we can all get our beat-the-living-shit-out-of-Ann-Coulter on.

That might be fine for regular people. The problem is, Edwards' husband is running for President and refusing to respond forcefully to a smear is tantamount to admitting it's true. Remember what happened to John Kerry when he didn't fight back against the Shit Boaters? A genuine hero was turned into a coward and traitor.
I understand Mrs. Edwards' refusal to get into a pissing match with the Skinhead Skank, but it's a big mistake to abide by the Marquis of Queensbury Rules when your opponent doesn't.
People like Ann "thrax" Coulter are the political equivalent of schoolyard bullies, who are best dealt with by giving them a taste of their own medicine. "Mommy, make them stop!" only encourages more bullshit from them.
Yes..the Edwarss campaign..so admirable...
