States refusing abstinence-only education money

We’ve been getting some comments and emails from you guys saying that you’d like to see us do more video blogs, so here we are. In fact, Jen is hard at work right now taping her first Weekly Feminist Hangover Report. Seriously.

So please be patient with us as we figure out the snazzy world of video blogging--and if anyone knows how to get my iMovie to stop zooming in on the Feministing logo, help a sister out. That shit is making me dizzy. And to Andrew, who thought I should do another take because I'm reading too much from the screen: Bite me, I'm tired.

By the way, here's the article I mention in the video. And also check out Ann's recent column on the subject.

Progressives in NC are also working on getting a law passed to move from abstinence-only to abstinence-plus. I don't know what the likely outcome of the vote will be, but PP is behind it. I'm optimistic that the tide might be turning down here.

Cool, this is a neat format.

Jess, you got the name wrong. It's Hungover Feminist Weekly Report. I don't want folks to think I'm blogging about my hangovers.

I don't want to talk about them, and trust me, no one wants to read about them.

P.S. Way to keep me from chickening out of this.

Very cool. It would help if you weren't so obviously reading, but that will come with time and practice. Video is not easy.

Then again, you could always just sport a large glass of wine and talk about American Idol. That makes video easy.

Yeah, it was either read or spend time (which I don't have) memorizing shit. ;) Next time, my friend...next time.

Two words for the next edition: Iambic pentameter!

Don't like that? How about Pig Latin?

I've sent your video to www.projectreadon.org for captioning.

It strikes me that a problem with video-blogging in general is that you can't read it and pretend to be working if anybody is in earshot.

Just saying.

Awww, feminists are adorable! :)

Two more words: no blinking. It worked for ZeFrank.

Fabulous use of technology!

Aside comment: thanks for the heads up on Project ReadOn, BEG - I am not greatly hearing impaired but I get more out of visual/audio media with captions than without, so I appreciate that.

An as to content, this is truly encouraging news. I think it's important to remember (as you point out, Jessica) that, despite the fact that many people think it's a good thing to encourage teenagers of both sexes to wait until they are truly ready to be sexual with a partner, "abstinence-only" education teaches a hell of a lot more than just "wait a bit." It usually (always?) comes with a whole raft of neo-traditional gender stereotyping and judgments about moral and immoral behavior.

Does anyone think that the federal government might listen as state governments start rejecting their funding? Or perhaps it will just give more media attention so that people will become better informed about the issue . . . and of course, let's hope all the kids in those states start receiving truly feminist sex-ed!

Thanks for sharing this story! Yeah for Ohio! And I'm digging the video format. Another problem with the "abstinence before marriage" hooplah is that if you're gay or lesbian, it leaves you out of the discussion entirely, since legally you can't get married. But those right wingers want all of us queers to die from AIDS anyway, so I guess that's their strategy.

Keep up the great work!

Excellent. I love seeing vlogs of you. It helps to put a face to the voice.

To get iMovie to stop zooming in on your logo: Just click on the clip you want (in this case, the Feministing logo) and then click on the Photos tab. Uncheck the 'Ken Burns Effect' box in the top left corner and you're good to go.
